That first 'palm' image is of an already existing 'island.' If you use Google Earth you can see where two more are being constructed. Both even larger.

Hi Dork,

Why when you zoom out does the whole image go away? all the new breakwaters are not visable is you zoom out just a little, while other features are stll there. ie. smaller break water jetty type things.

Two possibilities:
1) The further out images are from a different set that was taken before the islands were created
2) The whole thing is just a big prank and they don't really exist. They bribed the satellite imagery company to let them insert doctored images and only bothered with the closeups.

Saw a show on TV about its design and construction, so if it is a hoax it is a very expensive one. Being backed by a prince (oil money). The outer breakwaters and location supposedly protect it from tsunamis. Storms during construction were a bigger fear.

And if the scientists are correct, global warming will lead to another ice age (within our lifetimes) when the ocean currents slow and the seas will drop, not rise, as all that water is trapped in ice sheets again.

I saw a show on it and it talked about problem they had with it sinking, and how they had to reinforce with more rocky materials to keep parts from washing away. They also had problem with stagnant waters in places and had to increase the flow. Interesting project. It will be neat to see how it lasts over time.

Unlikely. Notice how shallow the Gulf is in this map:

Being a mile offshore in the Gulf is not like being a mile out into the Pacific. The figure I hear quoted is something like a 1:2000 rise or less, which means that a mile out you're in less than three feet of water, except where channels have been dug to let ships pass. It's going to be a very small Tsunami.

A slightly less photoshopped version might put this all in perspective.

and notice the visibly shallow draft of the ship used to do the dredging, and notice just how shallow that water looks now.

Even the city's harbor will only be 56 feet deep after it has been deepened!

They seem to have deepened the channels a little, but not much more than needed to keep that ship from running aground. The dramatic deep water blue probably gives people the wrong idea, but I guess that's the point. Somebody has a sale to make, so the pictures you find of this project are usually prettier than reality. Still, reality's not bad. The island's being made out of dredgings from the city's artificial harbor. Somebody took something that was going to be a nuisance and made something useful out of it. Good for whoever that was.

We took a detour to Chaco(World`s Worst Washboard Road") on the way to BM in `05. Absolutely fabulous place.

I have never seen bluer skies ...ever.

sigh.

I could spend months there. I really want to go and hike the ancient road that runs due north from Pueblo Bonita to the "end of the road"...maybe toss a flowerpot or something...
