Here's to Jake, a giant teddy bear of a chesapeke. He was an athlete, a sweetheart and a clown. And, here's to the people who loved him long and well. See ya at the Rainbow Bridge.

Goffert, Friesian stallion, dressage ambassador for the breed, Breyer horse model. And a sweet boy by all accounts.

Major colic incident, widespread necrosis of the intestinal tract. Had to be euthanized. He was only 13, which is scandalously young considering Baroque breeds can live into their 30s.

The Friesian breed authority needs to quit with this inbreeding quotient bullshit and loosen up the stallion approval standards. Our kids are dying too fast, too young.

Yes, yes and yes, DOT. I have a special affinity for Holsteiners and I have a truly lovely Hanoverian (who has still a lot of miles on the rail to put in before we lose enough of the silliness, he's been doing cross-country) - same issues with breeding.

It is always too sad to lose one of the especially talented ones way too soon. I think he had yet to hit his prime.

As far as I'm concerned, if the stallion's mother was a purebred Friesian, and his father was a purebred Friesian, there's no reason he shouldn't be approved for breeding (just so long as they don't do like the Arabian and AQHA breeders do and mate siblings or parent-and-child). They're always yawping about how Friesians are a rare breed and they're trying to keep the quality high, but I don't consider horses that drop dead in their teens to be high quality. That turns equine medicine back forty years. Lipizzaners and Andalusians live into their thirties. This is the tenth Friesian stallion death in the past four years; it's like, a year turns,
"Okay, who's gonna cash in this year?"

Sorry to hear about your pet, Mojo. My best friend and his wife lost their two oldest cats over the past two years. (The second oldest went downhill rather suddenly, the oldest followed about a year later.) They went out and adopted a new cat each time, maintaining their feline-kids at three. I don't know if adopting a new pet right away would be the right answer for you or not-- I'm just mentioning it as a possibility. (It seems to have been the right answer for my friends.)

Best wishes.

Kemet Mau, Lughnasadh 1993 - Ides of March 2007. Sweet black fuzzball of a kitty, BayCon attendee in her youth, survivor of a fire, guardian to both myself and my present cat Fetelbaum.

Earlier this evening, I was standing and felt something rub against and hug me, when no-one was there. She's come home. ImageImage

Sorry about the loss, DoT. Cats seem to have a weird relation with death-- they don't always seem to go all at once. After our first and longest lived cat (she outlived the others which lived with us when I was a kid), Tuffy, died, my mom one day got the feeling that Tuffy wanted to go outside. So my mom opened the door and it seemed that was when Tuffy actually left-- not how ever many days earlier it had been.

Doesn't surprise me that the ancient Egyptians held cats in such high regard.

I was thinking of shaving my eyebrows. That's how the ancient Egyptians mourned their cats, but the visions I got last night showed me that this wouldn't be a good way to mourn her.

What I'm going to do is take a cue from The Fountain. There's a cherry tree in Mom's back yard; I'll ask my brother to bury Kemet under it, and when Mom dies and the house comes to me, I'll take some fruit from the tree and plant the seeds in the new land after I sell the house.

Death is the road to Awe.

Those sound like good plans to me, even though I'm not familiar with the Fountain.) :)

Woody Harrelson's dad, convicted of killing Texas judge, dies
KVIA, TX - 13 hours ago

http://www.kvia.com/Global/story.asp?S=6259421&nav=AbC0

DENVER (AP) - Actor Woody Harrelson's father, Charles Harrelson, died of a heart attack in the Supermax federal prison where he was serving two life sentences for the murder of a federal judge in Texas, officials said Wednesday.

Charles Harrelson, 69, was found unresponsive in his cell on the morning of March 15, said Felicia Ponce, a Bureau of Prisons spokeswoman in Washington.

Fremont County Coroner Dorothy Twellman said an autopsy showed Harrelson had severe coronary artery disease. She said he probably died in his sleep. "It appears it was very sudden."

Charles Harrelson was convicted of murder in the May 29, 1979, slaying of U.S. District Judge John Wood Jr. outside his San Antonio home. Prosecutors said a drug dealer hired him to kill Wood because he did not want the judge to preside at his upcoming trial.

Charles Harrelson denied the killing, saying he was in Dallas, 270 miles away, at the time. Wood, known as "Maximum John" for the sentences he gave in drug cases, was the first federal judge to be killed in the 20th century.

Charles Harrelson was transferred to Supermax, the highest-security federal prison, after attempting to break out of an Atlanta federal prison in 1995.

Other inmates at Supermax, about 90 miles south of Denver, include Unabomber Theodore Kaczynski, Oklahoma City bombing co-conspirator Terry Nichols and Olympic Park bomber Eric Rudolph.

His son got his start in acting as Woody the bartender on "Cheers" beginning in 1985 and went on to star in films including "Natural Born Killers," "White Men Can't Jump" and "The People vs. Larry Flynt."

Woody Harrelson's publicist did not immediately return a call seeking comment Wednesday. The actor was just 7 when his father was first sent to prison, for murdering a Texas businessman. He was in college when his father was convicted of the judge's assassination.

Man who played Letterman's Larry "Bud" Melman dies
Steve Gorman wrote:Character actor Calvert DeForest, best known for his dead-pan appearances as the pudgy, bespectacled everyman Larry "Bud" Melman on David Letterman's late-night TV show, has died at age 85.

DeForest died on Monday at Good Samaritan Hospital on New York's Long Island after a lengthy illness, Letterman's production company announced on Wednesday.

DeForest, one of several quirky regulars used to comic effect by Letterman, debuted as Larry "Bud" Melman in 1982 during the premiere episode of NBC's "Late Night with David Letterman," which the network introduced following "The Tonight Show with Johnny Carson."

"It was the greatest thing that had happened in my life," DeForest once said of his initial "Late Night" stint at the age of 60.

Hi Abby.
You must have been a good sister to Sam.
You should come out some day and see what he enjoyed.
This year the fire pros all did their show for me while we were sitting around the propane campfire.
I had no idea anyone could do things like that!
Another once in a lifetime experience out there.
I got to play with a fire cannon too.
I have seen fire acts my whole life and I thought I was a bit bored by most of it at this point.
That's how good these guys are.
Come out and we'll make sure you see what Sam was a part of.
Visit the temple and put something in for Sam.
Or send something and one of us will do it.
It can't hurt.
Maybe Sam would be pleased if you got to share some of this experience.

I never did meet Sam. However, I have heard great things about him. My friends were camped next to him in 2005. I am sure I was one of those burners who just stood in awe over his performance. He has given so much and his love and creativity. It is still there. Celebrate his life.

Mojo, I read about your child. Losing a pet is a terrible thing. Sweet innosence lost. You child is with you; playing and waiting. Tis better to have love and lost then never to have loved at all.

Gabriel Wisdom 1971 - 2007

Post by MamaMoonfire » Tue Apr 10, 2007 3:04 pm

Many people have met Gabriel over the years. His first burn was in 1998, I believe. Last year was the first time he was not able to go.
One thing most people did not know was that he had a genetic kidney disease which caused him to go through two transplants and when those failed, be on dialysis for years at a time.
In order to burn, he had to have dialysis in Denver on Wednesday, fly to Reno on Thursday, enjoy a weekend on the playa, and fly back to Denver Monday in time for his next treatment. He never complained and when the Doctors said no way - he said, "you wanna bet?"

He was a brilliant philosopher, a humanitarian, an indie film maker, a lady's man, a man's man and an all around amazing human being.

He didn't have, want or need a playa name - being Gabriel Wisdom was all the naming he needed and it suited him to a T.

On March 20, 2007 he went in for a routine heart procedure and died on the table. His heart, after so many years of dialysis and surgeries was likened to one of a 70 year, it simply gave out, Gabe was 35.

We had the initial memorial on March 23 - his father, Barry Wisdom, who is also a burner, will be bringing his ashes to the playa for the formal farewell. If you knew Gabriel and would like to attend this farewell, please contact me and let me know. I'll keep you up to date about the where and when.

Gabe was one of my closest and dearest friends for 13 years - this weekend would have been the 13th anniversary of our meeting for the first time. He was the reason I became a burner, he coaxed me with tales and urgings for 7 years before I finally went in 05. He found me in the midst of our vast city on Friday night and escorted me across open playa during the dust storm that happened that night. I am glad that I was able to burn with him at least once, little did I know that the next time I would do so would be to say the final farewell.

My apologies for not posting this sooner, it's been hard trying to contact everyone who knew him - so many who met him even once, loved him instantly. If you have stories about Gabe, please post them so I can send them on to Barry - his father would really love to hear them all.

Love and Bliss,
Moon
