"We all want to live.
And in large part we make our logic according to what we like.
But not having attained our aim and continuing to live is cowardice.
This is a thin dangerous line.
To die without gaining one's aim IS a dog's death and fanaticism.
But there is no shame in this.
This is the substance of the Way of the Samurai.
If by setting one's heart right every morning and evening,
one is able to live as though his body were already dead,
he gains freedom in the Way.
His whole life will be without blame,
and he will succeed in his calling."

Junshi: this act of suicide
involved following one's lord in death.
Not entirely uncommon in the days of open samurai warfare,
junshi was banned in the Edo Period as wasteful.

Kanshi: Suicide through remonstration.
Not common, this involved killing one's self to make a point to a lord
when all other forms of persuasion had failed.

Sokotsu-shi: Here, a samurai would kill himself
as a way of making amends for some transgression.
This is possibly the best-known reason for seppuku,
and has perhaps been popularized far out of proportion to its frequency.

Flag planting has become popular celebration in college football,
prompting some conferences to ban it.
Flag planting usually occurs after rivalry games
in which the away team gets a victory,
then plants the school's flag in the home team's turf.

After a 2005 incident when Minnesota tailback Laurence Maroney
tried to stick the Minnesota flag in the Michigan Stadium turf,
the Big Ten banned flag planting.
The Southeastern Conference followed suit.

don't grow:

The Hermit
We have no option but to retreat into our own world
where we set our own goals and follow our own path.
No longer do we respect our "peers" for we are now loners.
We have been stripped of our influence but our dignity remains our own.
Our needs are not great and our pleasures are simple ones.

There is no evidence that Socrates wrote anything himself.

Image

t is unclear how Socrates earned a living.
If we believe Timon of Phlius and later sources,
Socrates took over the profession of stonemasonry from his father
(his father was a sculptor too).
But no earlier sources corroborate this story,
and Plato never depicts Socrates as coming to or from the job site.

Image

According to Xenophon's Symposium,
Socrates is reported as saying he devotes himself
only to what he regards as the most important art or occupation:
discussing philosophy.

Image

Xenophon and Aristophanes respectively portray Socrates
as accepting payment for teaching
and running a sophist school with Chaerephon,
while in Plato's Apology of Socrates and Symposium
Socrates explicitly denies accepting payment for teaching.
In the Apology,
Socrates cites his poverty as proof that he is not a teacher.

Sophism (gr. sophistes meaning "wise-ist,"
or one who 'does' wisdom,
i.e. who makes a business out of wisdom;
cf. sophós, "wise man", cf. also wizard)
was originally a term for the techniques
taught by a highly respected group of philosophy and rhetoric teachers
in ancient Greece.

Image

Today, a sophism generally refers
to a particularly confusing, fallacious, illogical and/or insincere argument
used by someone to make a point or for other motivations.

A straw man argument
is a logical fallacy based on misrepresentation
of an opponent's position.
To "set up a straw man"
or "set up a straw-man argument"
is to create a position that is easy to refute,
then attribute that position to the opponent.
A straw-man argument can be a successful rhetorical technique
(that is, it may succeed in persuading people)
but it is in fact a misleading fallacy,
because the opponent's actual argument has not been refuted.

Its name is derived from the practice
of using straw men in combat training.
In such training, a scarecrow is made
in the image of the enemy
with the single intent of attacking it.
Image
It is occasionally called a straw dog fallacy,
scarecrow argument,
or wooden dummy argument.
