Burning Wear & Sexy Playa Outfits: Question?

Post by fire charmer » Tue Mar 27, 2007 9:24 am

I've been sewing like crazy making all kinds of clothes for BM. I've pretty much made as much as I can for myself and have started making items for my camp mates. Fur hats, boot covers & hooded capes are my specialty.

Question: Do you think it's wrong to offer costumes to burners that want to purchase my designs? The thing it, I love creating & sewing but can't afford to do it for free. Fabric is so expensive.

Your feedback would be great. Thanks.

I don't think it wrong to have a business which supplies items to burners; but if you're asking if you may sell items here on eplaya, that's a big fat NO. No commerce, that's in the Terms of Service.

If you're offering your service for free then it'd be fine, but if you want to be compensated for your time then it's not allowed here. Seems there is a loophole that if you're making money off them that will go directly to your contribution to burningman it's allowed as a fund raiser.

Burning Wear & Sexy Playa Outfits

Post by fire charmer » Tue Mar 27, 2007 11:03 am

I would NEVER sell anything on eplaya or at Burning Man. I was thinking of posting on CL or eBay. I just wanted to see what other burners thought of seeing "Burning Man Wear" posted on someplace like CraigsList.

Thanks.

Didn't mean to sound harsh, just trying to be clear as crystal. We do get the clueless in here.

Personally I wouldn't care if you marketed your clothes elsewhere, but I do know you can't use "Burning Man" in the title of your ebay auction, unless you're selling tickets or some such.

Are you over on tribe? playalicious playwear seems like a good place to get input.

You might want to try some of the other burningman thread sites: the tribe, 3playa i'm not sure or set up your own commercial site. Some of the others might know were else you can post.

Someday there might be a burner to burner ad section that could be moderated.

A place to find your Green Energy Sources too.

But not now!

Perhaps the Future Eplaya will have a "pre-commerce" section for the Commercially Curious, where NO COMMERCE would take place BUT where links to sites could exist...Certainly, the link to Harbor Freight and numerous EL wire outlets have been tolerated so far. And CERTAINLY there would have to be a stern prohibition on cross-posting and eplaya-hawking, even for such tempting sites as CATHERINE ZETA-JONES BOOTYFEST and the other mental midgets that plague this realm.

You might also be able to network with local burners. You can make contact through the main burning man regionals page and then mention it at get-togethers.

In general, you have a talent that some others lack. Some of these others would love to wear fabulous creations, and have the money to pay you. I hope that the playa will always be open to poor but creative artists who cannot buy, but can put together creatively, but artists have always had patrons.

Side question: Do you want payment for time, or just materials costs? (Both are legitimate in my view and I'm not even interested in your answer, but I think it might be something to think about for yourself as you start making these steps.)

Thanks for all the great feedback! I'm very inspired to put my creations out there! Making BM wear brings so much joy into my life and I want to share that part of me with my BM community - always respectfully of course.

There are a lot of snarky, yet good hearted types on this board, and we take seriously the resoncibility of keeping the event going by making sure people know the permit terms and don't behave in such a way as to force the BLM to shut the event down.
Congradulations on being able to hear the concern rather than the criticism. It's a gift on this board.

I know about snarky because I can get that way too sometimes. I also understand about keeping the event going. It would crush me to see it disappear. It's one of the purest pleasures in my life. I can't wait to go home this year! Thanks for your kindness ~ fire charmer
