More Fire Less Blinky

OK I cant remember who said this to me last time at BRC, but I feel it is true, we need more Fire and less Blinky.

Dont get me wrong, blinky is great for nighttime safety, ie. not getting hit by drunk bike riders, and it's great for pretty little or BIG light displays.

The Name is BURNING Man , not light up.

I for one am planning a project made of Burnable Substances, to yes, Burn!

Lets have more Fire, Fuego, Discharge, Detonate, Ignite, Explode, Blow-up, BURN!

Remember, If you Dont play with Fire, You can't get Burnt!

What do you think about the controled burn action, ETC...

I agree with the more fire sentiment. I've been thinking of ways to keep myself lit up using flames and not being too much of a pain. This year our camp should have lots of fire as lighting and some faux fire effects.

As far as keeping ourselves lit up with fire, do you have any good suggestions? I'm considering trying to make small lamps that can be worn. Too many projects going on already though, but my mind is always trying to figure out better ways to do things.

I've been told that tiki torches are a pain. We're actually going to try them out this year in our village. They will be in concrete stands so blowing over shouldn't be an issue but blowing out might be. Anyway hopefully they'll at least work for the luau. We have some solar tiki torches too which look nice but don't put out much light. Hurricane lamps are great for around camp but I wouldn't want to ride my bike around with one. Fire is too inconvenient on the move, so unless we can get some better designs out there to carry fire, we'll probably all glow or blink.

I remember seeing the Chili Peppers with Gas Torch Hats, I think we should try that for Fire on the Go,

Its good for Bikers, Walkers, and even the Mutant Vehicle types.

As far as "considering trying to make small lamps that can be worn.", How about rubbing Right Guard on your body, ... Not only will it take away that Hippe (Need a Shower) Stench, but the Alcohol can burn if you light it without burning your Body.

Also, Those Bathroom fresheners that spray every 30 seconds can be worn and placed just above a Tea light on your clothing, so when it sprays, you have a little POOF of flame, Kinda cool....

I would love to find other fire juggles who can pass fire clubs in the dark and know a nice collection of tricks, my dream is to find another women to Juggle with in 2007.

I camp with other fire dancers but none juggle. I've seen some great fire juggling at BM but don't recall seeing any of the female origin.

Lets just ban the under 25 yr. old crowd....we all know they are really the ones who like to blink! Most dont know of or have any fire tools yet....We could send them to camps in Siberia for re-training. When they party like "we" do, then they could apply for readmittance. In fact , lets just form a commitee to approve members of the burning man community, that way we could only let those who "know" and "understand" (if you know what I mean) attend OUR functions. OF course we all know those candy ravers have been paying the price for all of us to have an electronic music scene working their little asses off to throw one night events/raves where it is a luxury to get away with spinning fire. That is why all they have are lights to trip on and glowsticks to spin...If we could just cut them off at the source(raves) then we wouldnt even have to worry about a second generation of burners coming along and changing things before our eyes...... can adjust.

I just tested out using an oil hurricane lantern for illumination at a burner event in similar circumstances as the burn. The results were good. I had never personally used one of these before. For those of you who don't know exactly what they are, it's just lamp oil and a wick, enclosed in a metal and glass lamp. For those of you who don't know or might be worried about carrying around lamp oil and fire, lamp oil is non combusable, meaning it does not ignite, much like candle wax does not ignite.

The lamp I used was small, about 8". I got pretty drunk while carrying it around and did not burn myself once. It doesn't event get all that hot. It was easy to set or hang anywhere. For camp illumination it does not even compare to the amount of light given off by compressed gas lanterns or spotlights, but does illuminate much better than tiki torches. I'd say hanging one up on a carport will give roughly the same light as a typical campfire. It is definitely plenty of light to see where you're going while walking.

I found the ones I used for $5 on-line. I recently found larger ones for $3 at the local Army Surplus Store. So the price is right. Lamp oil is pretty cheap too and lasts quite a while. You can go all night without needing to refill.

I'm thinking about making a hanger that will hold a lamp about 1' out from my shoulder, so I can have the light hands free if I want.

We got a couple of those hurricane lanterns and used them at night when we lost power for 12 days a couple years ago after hurricane Wilma. They worked great and didn't stink up the apartment. I tend to avoid using the genny more than 5 hours a day, only to keep the frezzer cold so food doesn't go to hell.

Oh I did forget to mention. The miserably failed the port-o-pottie test. I did not take it in but my lady did, and said she had to hurry up so that the fumes did not take her to the deep beyond. I'm guessing you could probably use it as long as you put the wick way down. You could also have a buddy hold it up to the cracked open door so you could see and not have to deal with it.

Mike, I think you were using tiki torch oil with sitrinela. try just utra pure lamp oil next time and you should be good for the potty.

You can get 4 different kinds of lantern oil. Since I use hurricane lamps and lanterns for lighting I've become pretty versed in this stuff. Here they are, from worst to best...

First is that "Citronella" crap. The reason it keeps bugs away is they don't want to be around those noxious fumes either. UG! Add to that you will soot your lamps and cook wicks almost instantly. I won't even use it in a tiki torch. You want to use Citronella, get the candles. Does the same thing, won't f--k up your lamps. You want to make sure your lamps and lanterns DON'T work - here's your stuff. (I've even tried "cracking" it with various volitiles - gasoline, Coleman gas, napthta, K-1, alcohol - nothing makes this shit work right in a real lamp.)

Second is Kerosene, K-1, or stinky smelly stuff. Cheapest, and there's a reason - tho if you burn outdoors, it doesn't matter. Will also soot lamps, but is probably easiest on wicks. It's what these puppies were designed to run on. Can be hard to find (like at a department-type store...) tho is easier to locate at Hardware places. (This is also what I use in those little round wicked "candle" style lamps as it seems to work best with thise rope style wicks, tho it still smells like... well... K-1)

Third is "Lamp Oil". Clear or colored. I don't get the colored stuff as it seems to act like Citronella re soot and wick damage. But the clear is cheap, and somewhat passable, tho it still does smell as far as using it indoors, but it is tolerable. I use this "cracked" with Coleman - like 5-10% - for my dietz lanterns on the porches and it puts out good light, but I'll only use this mix outdoors. Remember, for that you can use K-1 just as well... Best about "lamp oil" is it's easiest to find.

Fourth - what I use - is this stuff called lamplight "Ultra Pure". It's freaking expensive - like $11 for a square 3 quart jug at OSH - but it has almost *no* smell, *no* sooting compared to the other 2. Its only downfall is you have to keep your wicks trimmed, it will cook them faster than K-1, but you get good light and importantly, no smell. Its what I use for around the house, and pretty much everywhere else when I have the $.

Again, these are my results of using lamps and lanterns as our lighting for a few years now. YMMV and all that.

BTW - My guess is it was Kero or "Lamp Oil". Both smell when burned, K-1 (Kero) being the worst. NOT counting Citro. YUCK!!!

I'd rather be lit up than be a darkwad, also I don't know that I'd like managing a lantern while I'm speeding along the streets of BRC on my bike. Sounds like I'd light myself or others on fire, and whilst that would be "interesting" it might also ruin the experience.
