New Theme
I dunno about you but I am so pleased that the theme has been changed to sports instead of that silly green idea.
I mean I was always the shittiest and picked last when I was in school (until I learned to volunteer to be captain and do the picking myself).
Yeah, now I can pretend that I was a dickwad jock and see what it was like to be such an asshole first hand, bullying everyone on the playa.
YAY!!!

I so hope this is an April Fools Joke
Please, Please tell me I've been utterly fooled.
( Breathe.. Try not to sink into deep depression )
Surely,.. those in the decision making capacity did not just throw out all of their collective consciosness with the bath water. I know that there are always people out there who will complain, but really.
SPORTS?
Is this the end?
Should I sell it all and buy a minivan?

Sure but..
Isn't it something that we can all agree is a good idea?
Isn't it something that we should strive to achieve on the Playa?
Why just say, "Well, The event is NOT the thing so the thing is invalid." Can't art be about promoting change in the way we think? About convincing people that it's a good thing to work on?
Besides, how is the notion of investigating our relationship to nature at odds with what is happening on the Playa? Green Man is not about recycling or any other action. The idea is about the relationship between us and the Earth, and looking critically at that relationship.
Yes, SPORTS may be less agitating as a topic because it doesn't matter. Should we avoid all topics that matter because we can't agree upon an answer?

I never said it's invalid, just hypocritical, which are much different things. Why do people always twist things around? Reading comprehension? I've had some of those problems lately. I personally like the green theme, but only if I can be a hypocrite too.Why just say, "Well, The event is NOT the thing so the thing is invalid." Twisting
My point exactly.... some people can't have a discussion without getting defensive about not agreeing. You seem to indicate that the theme is not a valid Burningman theme because you think it's hypocritical. (My reading comprehension is just fine.)
I say that proposing a theme that is a call for exploration of an idea is not hypocritical. If any group proposes an exploration of an idea that might be out of alighnment with what that group has been doing, is that Hypocritical or is that an opportunity for change?

Considering it wasn't a group decision and considering it's highly unlikely that even those who made the decision would not make the changes needed to even think about realistically believing it could be "Green", I'll stick with hypocritical. If any group proposes an exploration of an idea that might be out of alighnment with what that group has been doing, is that Hypocritical or is that an opportunity for change?
And I think the theme is just fine. I like the idea. I hope some good inspiring art comes out of it. I've worked on solar and H.P.V. projects before and probably will continue to. I was just saying sports would at least be less hypocritical. Meaning at very least at least that would come out of such a crappy theme as "sports".
I did not try to indicate that. Something can be hypocritical yet still completely valid. Police men can and do commit crimes, yet when they enforce the law it's still valid. A parent can tell their kids to not drink and drive, even if they do it themselves. You seem to indicate that the theme is not a valid Burningman theme because you think it's hypocritical.
I don't mind being a hypocrite. Do what I say, not as I do.
What a perfect reflection of what is wrong in the world..
Avoidance.
*My homework is too hard; I won't do it and I'll go out and play instead and grow up to be an idiot.
*My life is too hard; I think I'll start shooting up to turn off the pain.
*I have no passion in my life; I'll stay home addicted to "reality" on the idiot-box and watch others live for me.
*This theme is too 'provocative'; let's all completely disregard the notion that art and life can be a catalyst for awareness and change and just go play some meaningless [possibly bloody] "sport" instead?
What the ^$)(&@#%&*&?!?!?!?!?!?
Someone please, PLEASE, tell me this is a typical burner April Fool's joke. Otherwise, I may just find myself blowing chunks at the next mention of this pathetic twist of fate. Who knows; maybe in very NON-burner fashion, I can sell tickets and make my indignance-inspired regurgitation a spectator sport for the new millenium!

OK already, We get the whole April 1st thing. Moreover, it has to be a joke, can anyone possibly think of a more diametrically opposed theme, to that of the spirt of Burning Man. I got it........ lets make the theme "Mainstream Culture's" favorite obsession.. ie Sports. You got to admit it is funny.
Do you think it's an accident that Burning Man ended up on the site of some of the fastest land speed runs in the world?
The only places where auto racing isn't the most popular sport are places without enough cars.
Then they race horses or whatever else is available.
Racing is life.
Everything else is waiting.

Actually there is no "racing". To be a pro as a couch potato, you must not be overactive, relaxation is the key. My former positon, (prone) was as a mattress tester. (tanks to lil abner)

Oh hell yeah! My contribution to BM would be way higher if we did that!gyre wrote:Let's race art cars!
The boat already has it's keel virtually on the ground, but I could cut it down to lower it more, make a roll cage and bucket seats and racing harnesses for ten people... replace the Quad 4 transaxle with a Caddy 500/Eldorado transaxle... and a second one in front... then set up a special spill-proof blender with a pump and long straws for serving margaritas at speed.
This is the best Burning Man idea I've ever heard.
It's not like there isn't room to do it...
GreyCoyote: "At this rate it wont be long before he is Admiral Fukkit."
Thanks.
Sounds like fun.
I'm working on a four foot high car for next year.
I wonder if a big block would fit?
Maybe a rotary turbo?

It would be a shame if I had to resort to self-deception to preserve my faith in objective reality.
