Let's discuss Burning Man "non-persons"
Over the years, a number of people have made significant contributions to Burning Man, but, because they fell out with the clique that now controls the event, they have been written out of the official Burning Man history. I'd like to start a discussion recognizing these Burning Man "non-persons" and their contributions. The first two I'd like to recognize are Jerry James and John Law:
Jerry James actually invented the event, back in the late 80's when he and Larry were best friends. Despite what the official history tells you, he came up with the idea of burning a man on the beach and built the first few Burning Men. Unfortunately for Jerry, he had a day job, whereas Larry was fraudulently claiming disability. The result was that Larry had more time to contact the press, claiming first to be the co-founder of the event, and then to be the "visionary" behind it. For some reason, Larry always wanted to be famous, and he saw the event that his friend had invented as a way to attain the fame he craved so desperately. When he was eventually forced out of the Burning Man organization, poor Jerry, who is a decent and sensitive soul, pretty much had a nervous breakdown. He truly loved Burning Man. It was his baby and it was stolen from him.
John Law was also once friends with Larry. He came up with the idea of holding Burning Man in the Black Rock desert, after holding the event in San Francisco became unfeasible. He also came up with the whole idea to transform Burning Man into a non-commerce-based society. At the time, Larry poo-poo'd the idea, but when he realized that it captured people's imaginations, he claimed it as his own.
Sometimes I feel quite sorry for Larry. He once had a lot of friends, but his greed and his craving for fame caused him to betray them all over the years. Now he's surrounded by people like Marian and Crimson, who despise him and only associate with him because it's to their financial benefit.

I like John
Larry actually credits John and Jerry in interviews. I think the media likes to focus on one individual (kind of like the vocalist of a band that gets alot of attention even though there's many equal players) to make it easier on themselves. Lazy bastards.
I really like John. He's got a prankster's heart and usually knows where to draw the line. If you're looking for a more balanced understanding of John Law's contribution and opinion of the event, here's a great article:

This is horrible. Haven't you read the official bio on the Burning Man Web site? It says Larry is the founder, not the co-founder or anything like that. Do you think the Burning Man organizers would lie?

You're right... mpd is quite serious.... and much different than being an asshole. I stand corrected....

non-persons history
WSPR - you know if you can find and talk to some of the old-timer members of San Francisco Cacophony Society (of which I think Law was a member, but I'm not 100% certain - brain rot), you'll get an even better picture of how manipulative LH became over the whole event.
Visionary? Perhaps, in the Steve Jobs-Steve Wozniak sense. But certainly not the brains behind it all. I have to admit though, LH is good at taking/stealing credit for things.

Don't speculate idly about John Law
After all he owns three of the coolest objects in the Northern Hemisphere and always gets good press. (Except from Emeryville, also known as E-ville where they are more interested in sales tax revenue than some of the most amazing art to grace this planet--well that's an exageration, the mall has a whole bunch of Bulwinkle's. Must have been some sort of error.)

I have been aware of Burningman man since 1989 and yes every
is true. I as friends with John Law. Knew Jerry and LArry harvey from 1989.
John law was the one that we went out to blackrock first. I was there on that trip and was a friend of mine named jason racquerby. and many other from the cacophony soceity.
so whatever you say about willpenroger. this set of story i can validate as truth. except the part about jerry and his emoptinal problems.
and yes john law owns 3 of the neatest (I almost forgot he had 3) of the neatest bay area art peices in the world. i still want to know why that person gave him the 3rd one and how they got it out of that big field without anyone knowing

Re: Let's discuss Burning Man "non-persons"
This person is very smart to post this because it speaks the truth. I should know, I was at the first burn in '86 on baker beach in SF. I have to say, the way Jerry James and John Law have been pushed out is really a sign of the corporate monster it has become. It has lost it's meaning with the exception of a few cool pieces of art. All it was when it started was our family and friends having fun on the beach. Why did it become the way it is? Well, certain people (who I will not name), who long for fame and wealth don't care about the corporate powers that want to exploit this thing we used to do for fun. Now it easy for any yuppie with a couple hundred dollars to experience, but with those kind of people there it's not an experience worth having anymore. What is underground, is what is cool. Jerry James and John Law have too much integrity and honor to suck money and fame out of this crap, they are a few of the most humble people I know. They do deserve more credit, after all Jerry did build the first BM. One thing this comment got wrong a little, was the nervous breakdown of Jerry James, he held it together as well as anyone could who was being cheated, and he really didn't have a nervous breakdown, he was of course not happy about it. I know this because he is my father. But thanks for your comment you really are a smart and unique person. I wish more people knew the truth.

Personally, I don't much care for people telling me that "Burning Man has lost its meaning." If it's lost meaning for a person, that person shouldn't go.
Burning Man "means" something different to everybody who participates. It hasn't lost its meaning for my wife and friends and I at all. We get together, buy our tickets, build our art, take it to the playa and participate. If that has no meaning to people, fuck 'em. It still means something to me.
