It was. Actually the overlays I've seen of Lahontan showed a larger body of water than the one above - more like an inland great lake. And you know, you can pull shells out of the hills there... and fossils up the yinyang. Kinda cool geographical area...

Been thinking of that area recently... Kinda miss Hawthorne. Then again, it's changed since I was a little kid.

Now this thread was about the hawking of green things at BM. This thread has drifted even farther than Gondwanaland.
Plate Tectonics is for the most part proven, it's a subject I've been reading up on since I was in elementary school and I've long been fascinated with it to the point I read anything and everything I can find on the subject. As for Sonomia....it is considered a theory, and one with no hard evidence to back it up. That statement is not my opinion, I'm simply echoing what I've come across about the subject. It's interesting, it sounds good, but in the end there's nothing to really back it up.

Again, that's why the request for CITES was made, and the request remains unanswered. As for BM being Green.....it's a good subject that warrants getting back to so I'll shut up and go back to reading, not posting.

I see. I guess if one were to look at the old shoreline evidence, that is everywhere, then look at the volcanism that has occurred pre, post and concurrently with the lacustrine environment back then, one might see that there was huge seas, lakes or whatever you want to call them back then, call it Sonomia, Blackrockolia, or something else but the evidence is there if you look.

One must also not forget about the Ichthyosaur fossils found just out of Gabbs....... Those babies didn't fly in there... they swam....

Lake Lahontan is not being called into question. I have eyes that can see the evidence of it's existance. It's the educated guesses about the subsurface structures and their origins that I'm calling into question.

Ah, okay! That's not too far away from where I am currently living (West Baraboo). The glaciers dumped a lot of stuff in this area, near the edge of one or another of the glaciers.

I seem to be pretty "out of it" today-- I keep thinking that there was something else I could add, but have no idea what it would be!

Had the garbage contact for West Baraboo.. No one wanted it..A bud and I bid $10.. WE hauled the first month in two 1936 ford pickups.. Then got an pre war GMC stub nose.. Had it about six months..Some guy gave us enough to buy a couple of cars and a mess of drugs..I was 16 bud was 17.. WE took the old pickups and went back to scrap iron and paper/cardboad.. Wounder what that contract is worth today?

Sonomia is unproven scientific mumbo jumbo that is loosely based around theories on plate tectonics with no hard core, scientifically valid proof to back it up. Or in other words it's a myth and it's why I asked for a cite and instead got to read a bunch of crap.
To the uninitiated and disbelieving I’ll try to answer. The name Sonomia represents a geological crustal block known as a terrane and is associated with the Golconda Thrust which is seen as a significant event in the geological history of western North America. Just as Pangea, Gondwana and Laurasia are names assigned to ancient geological landmasses, so Sonomia derives its name albeit one less esoteric in its origins. Like many geological features, proper names are often assigned using existing geographical features (towns, mountains, lakes, etc.) located in the vicinity where the feature happens to occur. In the case of Sonomia the name derives from the fact that examples of this remnant geology can be found – but are not limited to - the Sonoma mountains in northwest Nevada.

As noted before, Sonomia also references the ancient volcanic island-arc (also known as a microplate) which is believed to have collided or ‘docked’ with the western edge of North America sometime during the Triassic. When such collisions involve whole plates the resulting collision is referred to as a terrane. There’s nothing unknown or mythical about this geological occurrence although most any student of geology will cede that the specifics of certain geological processes and mechanisms remain unclear. References to Sonomia are numerous in the scientific literature . For example, in his paper Complex fold and thrust relationships, Mac Canyon, northern Pilot Mountains, west-central Nevada John Oldow writes:

Lithologic units exposed consist of the volcanic and volcanogenic rocks of the Permian Black Dyke Formation (Speed, 1977) and the carbonate and elastic rocks of the Upper Triassic Luning and Upper Triassic and Lower Jurassic Sunrise-Gabbs Formations (Muller and Ferguson, 1939; Oldow, 1981a). The Black Dyke Formation represents part of the terrane, Sonomia (Speed, 1979), which maybe part of an accreted microplate which was attached to the western margin of western North America in the Permo-Triassic. The Mesozoic carbonate and elastic rocks were deposited in shallow marine environments supplied with continentally derived debris and minor amounts of volcanic detritus. They are representative of part of the Mesozoic marine province of the northwestern Great Basin (Speed, 1978; Oldow, 1983, 1984), which consists of
rocks that are largely allochthonous but undoubtedly of North American affinity (Oldow, 1984)....

Our resident geotard opines:
Plate Tectonics is for the most part proven, it's a subject I've been reading up on since I was in elementary school and I've long been fascinated with it to the point I read anything and everything I can find on the subject. By the way I'd be firing off this post regardless of who put it out here, the fact that it's Badger makes no fucking difference. Bad science is just bad science and deserves to be called out as such..
followed with this achingly uninformed tripe:
As for Sonomia....it is considered a theory, and one with no hard evidence to back it up. That statement is not my opinion, I'm simply echoing what I've come across about the subject. It's interesting, it sounds good, but in the end there's nothing to really back it up.
Kinetic/Ack-angel your stale, predictably uninformed reply doesn’t come unexpected. It was just a matter of time before you once again gifted us with your unique, online version of spoken-out-of-the-ass verbal epilepsy. Thank you for not letting us down you pompous, un-medicated fool. Still, I can appreciate the laughs I'm having at your expense. For those interested in further ‘bad science’ cites on the subject I’d point out just a few of the scientific papers available through my work site referencing Sonomia and its relationship to north western Nevadan geology – including the ancient Lake Lahontan lake bed area:

Of course it's "uninformed", I intentionally skewed those posts. I don't have access to Stanford's vast resources being stuck here in the Midwest. But you do, and since I can't engage you in civilized dialogue like two normal human beings should be engaging in, I have to make do with what works to tap your expertise which I do respect. And in this case I just had a treasure trove of resources opened up to me and you saved me a heck of a lot of time and effort in finding high quality sources. Actually the best part of it all come to think of it is how that list will now be searchable on the board and easily linked to as a resource for anyone curious about the Black Rock Desert and Northern Nevada for years to come. In short, the ends certainly justify the means. Thank you! Now if you'll excuse me, I intend to go track down much of the stuff on that list.

Edited for clarity....
Edit 2: The resources on the Golconda thrust fault will be particularily helpful.
which consists of rocks that are largely allochthonous but undoubtedly of North American affinity (Oldow, 1984)....
that seems green to me.

So not really part of the north Am plate, but perhaps formed as a result of the subduction zone, resulting in a black, not green, intrusion dyke of orogenic antesite now eroded and exposed to us as the formation known as the black rock therefore it is not Green. Or it was formed earlier wholly within sonomia of as a result of typical orogeneous mountain faulting? It is a huge formation. I would lean towards plate subduction.

A Green thought I might say.

I would gather that the contiguous ridge north of the black rock might be a remnant of sonomia? Does any of your books mention that. Green. There is a lot of metamorphic lithologic formations in that area. No telling if it was from an ancient subduction zone or just typical mountain orogeny if given the green light of development.

Sound like some good reading while on a back road trip in the area since I'm green on this matter.

thanks for the info!
I’m skeptical of the whole green theme, it is so reminiscing of having a father to be boil water not because you need boiled water but because it makes him feel like he’s doing something,... or the kids collecting gum wrappers to be melted down to build bombers in world war two,.. let’s all act empowered we’ll all feel better OK,.. see, we through our own personal efforts are Doing something, that will,... will,... well it has to do some good right?

OK so now burning man is being changed into the worlds fair of alternative energy , or at least that seems to be the hope,... See we aren’t just about something frivolous like art or community we are marshaling these creative forces to do,....something, that,...that,... well it has to do some good right?

But the music will play all night long people will, do what they have always done and Burning Man will continue on, no mater what, those well intentioned people do to try to make it,... something else, you know better.
wow.... ok. i havent got the quote down yet ... haha
regardless ... this slipped by me .... somehow, somewhere in there, this articulated everything about this green theme with me
and maybe it was meant all in sarcasm
but all along this theme seememd like it was all well in intention, but just didn't add up for me.
and this nailed it on the head.
