The Gerlach WebCam

Post by EL Wire » Fri Apr 13, 2007 12:13 pm

Hi there!
How many fans of the Gerlach WebCam is there?
I live in Norway and this camera plays an important part of my life here!
Something is wrong with the white balance these days I think.
It's impossible to see the Playa in the background.

I check it every day. The image quality has been bad for a few months now.

Is it some how possible to find out what type of model the web cam is?
Perhaps we could gift them a better one if we are many enough wanting it.

You know... Spending so much time just to get a visual picture of the nearest town to BRC... Takes away from the experience and the excitment that you get when you actually get there... Just a thought...

I disagree too. For me living in Norway and going to BM every second year, that camera is keeping me alive.
Here you see what has happen to the camera,
The picture is huge but the white balance need some fixing.
Impossible to see the playa as it all turns out white.
They have planted some new trees just now, I love that as I'm obviously a big fan of the Water Tower Park

As do I disagree. As degraded as the picture has become (why can't we all donate $5 and get the org a new camera?) it is a link to home. Not just the playa, but in a wierd way the place I grew up. Which, back then, was kinda like a big version of Gerlach.

If ya don't know, you can't understand.

Ohhh, there's Yuk-Tuk. Miss her so much.

And thatnks, el - One of my favorites is the one on my b'day, with the tower all lit up...

Does somebody here know who is in charge of the camera?
Some technical info on the existing camera and history would have been great!
And hi there BB Sue, thanks for the support!
I'm willing to pay more than 5$ to get a better camera as I use it many times a day : )
But it could be that the problem is solved with a little configuration of the existing camera
(If I only knew what model I could download the manual and .... think think!..dream dream.............!!.)

I've lost track, are you coming this year ('07), or is this an 'off' year?
If it's an 'off' year, you'd better send me a snail-mail address EL-Wire, and I'll send you some playa dust.

No, really.

This is what you do with it: mix it with some water in a paper cup until it's about like thin pancake batter, then pour it into an empty Altoids tin or something and place it somewhere warm and dry. It takes a few days, but it'll dry out with big cracks and look just like the playa. Then you put in next to your computer and if that doesn't make you smile you need to check for a pulse.

I'd like to make a coffee table sized version with glass over the top.

This year I'm attending Burning Man in 1:87th scale, and next year in 1:1 scale. :D

This is pretty weird.
On the other hand, I like to look at Eislandic traffic cams in winter.
Any good Norwegian cameras?

love the webcam.
hate photo heavy threads on dial up.
also wish I could fix the webcam photo so that it centered on my screen when the page refreshes.

It looks like the camera needs to have its lens cleaned. (After that point, my camera expertise ends!)

Maybe I am glad I didn't go in 2005, if Godzilla was still lurking in the area!

He must have been in deep playa-- I never did make it out there. So, yeah, I guess I missed him!

(However, I did see the fleet of oven mitts flying overhead, whether they were there or not. So there!)

I don't know that tha's such a good idea. That camera is just a little too good for my comfort. Consider that at full magnification one might be able to zoom in on Bruno in the back of his restaurant. That the unwitting viewer might be able to see him slaughtering whatever animal goes into his lasagna is too horrible to contemplate.
