To Big?!

Post by Jamm'in » Mon Apr 16, 2007 7:06 pm

Another quick burgin question.....Even though this is my first year, I have decided to bring a 20'x10' tent and just want to make sure Im set. Do I need to register it, (being that size), or if I plan on having a 10'x10' open during the day for shade...would that have to be listed as a camp?
Any info on that, would be greatly appreciated.

.....And I dunno about the color of this tent, what would be your first opinion on seeing a big bright red 20'x10' tent.?? Ill def have to customize this thing

Thanks

20x10 is about the size of a car. A little on the large size as far as tents go, but nothing compared to the structures even the small non-them camps bring.

No need to do anything special other than let your group (if you have one) know about it so anyone arriving before you can leave enough room for it.

Too small. Go bigger. :)

Really, that's a good sized tent for a small group, but with everything else it will have plenty of room out there and will hardly get noticed. As said before, some theme camps squeeze themselves into areas so in that case it could become significant, but if you're not going with a planned theme camp, you'll find a spot. Later in the week you may need to search a bit, but early on, just set it up anywhere.

Color doesn't matter. Everything just looks like a bunch of junk everywhere unless you work really hard at the decor. Remember that if you have 7 people sleeping in there and brought 3 cars, those cars will make much bigger appearance impact than a bright orange tent.

There's a little of everything in this example...all of it open camping, and showing, oh maybe 5% of the city. Take your pick of camp styles. At night there's pretty colored lights glowing and blinking everywhere, so bring some for your playa home.

When I first got there and everything was covered in dust, it looked like a lost flea market in a black and white field.
It all looks like a bad refugee camp at first.
My first thoughts knowing I'm stuck for the week there-
I have really fucked up this time!

It gets better though.

For a really good look, check out Brad Templeton's panoramas from the past couple of years. They're fascinating, and show the rich diversity of structures to good effect.

There are several collections of panoramas.
Digitalpanos is one.
Try to find a wide hidef monitor so you can open up the panorama.

Or you can come out for the ultra mega hyper hidef version.
The resolution is staggering.
This year a life size virtual simulation of the city will be held in august.

Wow, that great. Thanks for all the input.....Much more reassured. Well then, just so you all know. It will be a big red tent, with different color/patterns of red flags surrounding it, then will have plants growing all around it and within a section of 10'x10'(fake plants of course)

Thanks again everyone..... Great picture showing the playa!

Careful with fake plants. Some of their leaves or other parts are just pressed on and will easily blow off. I made the same mistake last year with some flowery vines. I ended up accidentally mooping some before I realized how easily they came apart.

Ditto the fake plants warning - i fear there will be a lot of fake plant moop this year due to the theme. I have been spending nights and weekends gooping silk plant materials together.

Yea I can easily see that happening with the plants.... So would you recommend silk plants? Or what about this (just a lil idea), I was thinking of making my own plants/leaves, Buying fabric and cutting them out to the size of leaf you want, then stitch wire to it, to hold its shape? If I can get enough fabric/color patterns to make it work, we'll see if it shows up at home.....

I'd love to see plants made out of used materials. Crushed green plastic soda bottles with the labels removed make good durable leaves and can be tossed in the recycling bin when you get back.

It just depends on the plants. When you go shopping for them make sure you cannot easily tear them apart. Some plastic and silk plants are pretty much one solid piece, others are just loosely held together.

Ugly Dougly brought up the question I forgot to ask....Since I do have a 10'x20' tent, will I have to register it. Whats the maximum size your tent can be before you have to register it?

I'd guess about 100'x200' is about as big as you could make work without registering for the area. Beyond that it'd be tough to find an open spot even if you show up monday at 12. You'll be fine

Thanks Mike for all the info and input. Greatly appreciated. ......About the wind storms though, when they do whip up, what would be the best recommendation for your shelter...(open the sides, buckle down the hatches, or just wish for luck)? I plan on having 2 24" rebar stakes at each pole, then using my car as an anchor for 2 of them.....Sound capable enough?

It's hard to say about the wind. Our carport did fine the last two years while staked down, but last weekend it did not do so well. Wind ripped the tarps gromits out and some of the bungies broke. The frame got twisted (and this is a heavy duty carport made from thick tubing). Also the rebar stakes were bent and one sheared off. Not really sure what could have been done to help this. We'll probably adapt it to a flat roof so their is less chance for it to catch the wind. This is the heaviest duty mobile carport I've seen and it didn't make it through these winds.

If you face it properly it'll catch less wind. Basically the wind almost always goes from the town down into the playa. It's occasionally reversed but rarely goes any other direction. That can help some.

It can'y hurt to have a contingency plan...You don't have to have High Wind Drills unless it sounds like fun, but at least think about what you'd do if it really whipped up. Which it can. And does. If it gets whippy enough, all you can do is furl your sails and wait it out.
