1" EMT in 20' lengths?

Post by MikeVDS » Fri Apr 20, 2007 11:44 am

We designed our dome around 20' lengths of 1" EMT. Now it seems all of a sudden it is not available in 20' lengths anymore which means a lot of waste for our design and more money. We found galvanized tubing in 20' lengths for .54/foot (which is the same thing basically, diameter, thickness, etc, just not rated as EMT). The problem is they only can get it in 300 piece bundles and we only need 88. They are working with us to see if they can get a small order but it's not certain. If anyone knows where we might be able to get this please let me know. If it can be found significantly cheaper we're willing to use non galvanized and then just powdercoat it. We're in Southern California. Any advice?

Oh. The dome is a v4 ~40 foot dia with ~6' struts covered with a 64' parachute. That means ~1600 feet of tubing.

We have alternate designs that would work even better if we could get just over 20' lengths. A v4 with the bottom layer left off would give more floor space using the same cover, wouldn't be as tall (a good thing IMO), and would use less material. The only downside is slightly longer struts ~7' instead of ~6'.

Beans, beans, the magical fruit?

We found some used top-rail that's cheap. Not enough, but mixed in with new top-rail we should end up stronger for the same price. But I'm still looking for hook-ups if someone knows of one.

21 feet is the standard length.
Keep looking.
I bought a bunch of fence tubing used for $5 a piece right before steel went up.
I found tons of stainless railing surplus too.
You never know what you'll find.
Check wrecking yards, classified, ask about bent pieces.
