I've been reading all the recommended and suggested texts, I was considering buying the video documentary, but perhaps I should wait and witness the spectacle first hand and with all three of my eyes. Nothing will prepare me, so I doubt it would be a spoiler.

blackmadonna, Your thoughts about waiting to see a video is the way I would go..See it 1st in person and have no expectations. Open mind, Open eyes, Open heart... Save the video for after you get back to the default world to see what you missed. Cuz you can't see everything, just can't.... 8) 8)

Hey BlackMadonna,

I didn't look at a video before my first burn either. Heck, I didn't even know about the message board. I just went on my companion's word and a few of his photos. I love wearing costumes and being free so when we arrived, it was great to know how prepared I actually was.

Hey and....
Since you'll be (of age), stop by the Booby Bar. Tell them Lorgasm sent you. You'll get a good seat. :-)

Peace and Pleasant Birthday Wishes,

Can and will do Lorgasm. Idbdave, I think you are correct. This is a solid forum, I am going to peruse this beast and meet some burners. I am thinking about hooking up with some village in my region and riding solo with them. I might use this as a personal pilgrimage, going totally out of my element. New group, new friends, new world, and not a drop to drink, until I turn 2-1. Thanks all.

OHHHH, Black Madonna, do be careful...."not a drop to drink till 2-1"
You soooo need to be careful out there, if you've never drank alcohol, and your going TO out there...you'll find yourself sick, or worse passed out drunk. (bad things can happen to passed out people)
Take a couple of these informational idea's and chew on them....

1. you've never drank alcohol? REALLY?
2. you've never experienced drunk (1st time AT playa, not really a good idea, do a dress rehearsal before you leave home, and a TRUE friend to watch you and how it reacts with you, to give you a full report in the morning!)
3. ALWAYS have a sealed top drink container, dont walk around with open top...dangerous!(I dont care how cute that lil' plastic martini glass is...unless its completely covered... leave it at home) In a city of 40,000 people yes, there are Assholes out there who think its funny to slip you a micky!
4. Where you live(anywhere) is different from the climate and elevation of the Black Rock City Playa, alcohol will effect you differently there...ie...drunker faster, dehydration,etc...
5. Be careful not to over do it early in the week, pace yourself!
6. Most Important, drink water...lots of water, for every cocktail/shot you have drink 2, 8-16 oz. waters
7. when you get your camp set up , be sure to know where ALL EMT MED. tents are, so if you do find yourself overly inebriated and get scared you can go there to sober up. safely.
8. If you plan on going out for cocktails around the city, do BE and have the BUDDY system working, never go out alone drinking!

I'd like to think Im a avid drinker(hehehe) but I tell you I do start drinking a lil' heavier a couple weeks before we go to build up a lil' resistance(sounds like training for a marathon...IT IS!!!!)
no really... I usually only have a couple cocktails over a whole weeks time (in default world) but I do pump thoughs number up before we go, for real, your body is a funny thing, and resistance is futile!

I appreciate the guidance, however I meant "not a drop to drink" in the context of BM. I don't advocate underage drinking if it will put someone other then myself (i.e. the booby bar for instance) into any sort of legal turmoil. I do have a mild tolerance, I'm no badass though. Alcohol might be the last sort of thing I'll inbibe during the day. I'd prefer to stay well hydrated and sober in the intense heat. It gets hot here, but not quite like that. THough I do believe I'm fairly accustomed to outdoor conditions. I want to save my party reserves for the night and soak up the community during the day. I appreciate any and all advice!

Hello I am new to this forum/website/BM. I have heard stories for years but never thought I would go because of the price and the madness of it all. I am definitely going this year though and I am getting very *!^%@!!&# excited about it.

I am a film student and I saw that we are not allowed to bring cameras without a permit? how does that work? any suggestions?

My favorite films are Celebration, Barraka, F for fake, the Host, Clockwork Orange, Easy rider, Dead Man.... it keeps going

I don't know if I am allowed to talk about drugs on the forum? even if I just allude to them?

Welcome to this dusty little thing we do... or... As we are so fond of saying at 3:00 and A... You are so fucking doomed... heh heh heh...

First - read the Survival Guide at the Burningman.com site. Will have all kinds of answers to questions you haven't even thought of yet (and will get you hyped even worse).

Good questions. About the camera - the permit process is EZ as sin (tho not as fun)... when you get to the greeter station, tell them you need a camera tag. They'll produce a form to fill out and get your camera tagged. IF somehow you space on it (yeah, first time, it happens!) you can get one at Playa Info at Center Camp. IF your camera can do movies (even on flash) you must get a tag, and it's not a bad idea for still stuff too. (If it gets lost and still has its tag they can find you later to get it back to you yada yada...). I get one for everything I bring out there so I'm covered.

The Drug thing? Well... a couple comments. LE people (AKA "the man", "the fuzz", "Cops", etc.) read this PUBLIC forum, too. Remember most recreational drugs are illegal in Nevada (in a bad way, big time, "F" word illegal) so if you do decide to speak about them be warned. They don't take kindly to rec drugs out there for the most part. Also the org discourages drugs outr there, not only for the legality purpose (no one wants to miss a burn because they were busted!) but for health reasons, too. Seriously.

Remember, you're goin' to a fucking dry, fucking hot, fucking cold, fucking remote, fucking desolate, and REALLY fucking insane fucking place, and the Playa (with 40K other people) is NOT the place to have a bad trip... I've seen people out there go over the deep end into the abyss over stuff they usually do, worse, the desert can be a mean and tricksy little (OK, big) fucker, and if you forget it (or get ripped enough to forget it) it will reach it's nasty ass hand up and kill the fuck out of you to death, which is an even worse way to miss a burn. Or so I've heard.

You got your ticket? Get it. Tent? Got your gear? Get it. Got your shade? Water? Food? Don't forget that stuff. And be warned - this is a really valid thing - do NOT expect a single muthafukkin thing out there. The burn will imprint it's experience on you, and vice versa. In a crowd of 40,000 burners (Jeez, 40K?? That's a LOT!) EVERYONE will have their own experience of the burn. Whatever that is, is.

Confused? By this time next year, you won't be. heh heh heh...

Good luck...
bb

Thanks for the information. It answered a lot of my questions. I don't think I would be about an event of this caliber without some substance. I can see how alcohol is a bad decision but tabacky is essential.

Thats great about the permit I thought it might be a difficult process, sounds alright though. Thanks agin

Hey, my names Tim, but most people calls me hippie, I'm from New Zealand where I live and work on a community called Wilderland which is on the Coromandel Peninsula.
I went to Kiwiburn, the New Zealand Burning Man regional which made it appear very clearly to me that I HAD to go to BM, so currently I'm working my ass off in a kiwifruit packhouse to get enough $$$ to get to the USA, I have my BM ticket and last night I bought my airfare so I will be there for sure! I seriously can't wait!!! the only thing keeping me going at the packhouse is dreams of the burn :D

Heya Hippie, welcome to this side of the pond... (kind of like our side of the wall...)giggles(

I've heard a lot about people putting up with hardships to come to BRC, but a Kiwifruit Packhouse on the 'mandel? If that's not suffering for the arts, I don't know what is. That's pretty... um... yeah. Inspirational? Insane? Crazy? )grins(

But you got the worst parts done. You got the plane trip and the ticket (DON'T FORGET yer passport!), hopefully the Hostel will be recovered by then (if not, talk to Hana about our "Lend-Lease-Infiltrate-Assimilate" offer)...

And don't forget to read the survival guide a couple times, esp. taking into account the differences between the Playa and the Paddock...

hey!
my name is andy, i'm a 17 year old high school student way the fuck up in southern ontario, canada, in a city called burlington. i've been talking about going to bm this year with two of my friends, needless to say we are stoked at the very idea. although a little far fetched, we want to do the drive and hit up places all along the way. we'd visit chicago, my mormon friend has family in utah (haha!), las vegas, and maybe a stay in california for a couple of days prior to the start of bm. it would be the ultimate road trip! and then burning man!!! wow. this would be the experience of a life time..and a great conclusion to the summer!

i've read the survival guide and a few other articles on the website. i have just one question..

all children (pssh) under 18 must be accompanied by an adult 21 or over. going with a parent just wouldn't be the same..sorry pops. i was thinking i could pick up someone at the reno airport and then they could get us through the gates..any comments on that?

also, although not directly bm related, does anyone know if there is any beef with people under 18 entering the states without an 'adult'.

sweet, much love to all burners!,
andy

Unkloyd, welcome. This is Doc, and I've been friends of Frank the Vintner since 1973. We were fraternity brothers (ZBT) at UCSB and now are neighbors in the Auburn-Newcastle area. He has been a vital part of our camp for the last seven burns and any friend of his is a friend of mine. Are you attending his Memorial Day Party? Lots of burners from BDC&WB will be there.

Yes, I have a big problem with it. You may be responsible enough but if you get to go what stops the 16 year olds? Then the 15, 14....etc. Let's not turn this into a haven for run-aways. Do I have to worry about carding folks before I give them a drink now?

Hi all,

Noah here. I got connected to this forum through the burning man website. This year will be my first time to the playa. I'm 20 and finishing up my freshman year at The Evergreen State College. I'm passionate about primitive skills and I look foreward to the adventure that burning man most certainly will be.

Loyd, Doc is good people, as I’m sure your dad will profess.

Actually I think you do need to worry about carding people, unfortunately.

Ando, I suspect you will indeed encounter problems getting into the states without being 18. Suck as it may, we've all been there with the "just under legal adulthood" thing. I know it's frustrating, but you'll get there all to quickly. In fact, you are fretting about turning 18 and I am sitting here looking at the fact that when I faced the same problems you face now, you were just being born. It goes very quickly...

But I also understand that things are subjective. I hope that if you are mature enough to pursue traveling to Burning Man alone, that you are mature enough to understand what I'm saying.

You also asked about meeting up with someone to escort you in and then drop you. Well... honestly you might find someone out there who would do that, but you probably won't find them on this board. To do such a thing would put the "adult" and yourself at legal risk and more over, it just doesn't seem cool. I could never do such a thing for you and then feel I'd given proper respect to you, myself, or the event. But that's just my take on it.

Why not look for local burners in your area to hook up with? You may well find a great group of friends who will be able to provide you the passage you need and make your first burn better than you ever expected!

The Green Man... will be my first...

I'm driving up from Las Vegas with a friend, I'm outdoors hiking almost every week in the desert, but never for a week at a time before... this should be a great lesson and learning experience in survival among other things. Looking forward to becoming part of the enigma and meeting a group of people that enjoy burning the man. Onward to the rest of the eplaya.

Cheers,
Brad

My name is Jaclyn and zero seven will be my first burning man ever. My best friend has been all over the world twice, and said that the burning man was by far the most amazing experience he's ever had, so im totally pumped up, and feel very lucky to be going with someone who is not a burning man virgin, so i feel like i have a little bit of a heads up, at least for the survival part of the experience. I enjoyed reading everyones experience, its only made me more pumped and excited to be a part of something that will more than likely change my life. Thanks guys!

Welcome Brad and Jaclyn.
In some ways you're lucky to have people who know the ropes to help you into the event. If you're not super outgoing it can sometimes take a little time to get past the culture shock. If you're with experienced burners you'll see them interacting and you'll realize that the art and toys and domes are yours too as long as you treat them with the respect you'd want them treated with if you spent the effort to provide them for the community. We want everyone to play with us, not to just watch us play with our toys. This can be counter intuitive for some if they come from the default culture where you don't mess with other peoples stuff. It's not all free game. You still leave peoples private things alone, but most people bring things they want to share with the rest of the burningman family.
