Famous bands that have played at BM?
Famous bands that have played at BM?
Are there any well-known bands that have played at the burn?
I am thinking bands that would be internationally known outside the US, not just your favourite band from Fuddville, Iowa.
There is a reason for this question, which i may elaborate on later.

I sorta hope famous bands DONT come to Burning Man to perform. Not sure I can articulate why, exactly, except maybe it would tend to tip the scales to "spectator." but having said that, if Julian Cope were to play Center Camp I would think I have died and gone to heaven.
Baby Seal Club played Center Camp last year and theyre famous!

Baby Seal Club? They're from Fuddville aren't they? ;)
Well, some famous DJs (eg Paul Oakenfold, Tiesto) have played Burning Man, I wondered if famous bands had too.
And i don't think it need change attitudes to spectatorism any more than any other sound camp does. The band would be there to give (for free). And probably would play without their epic stadium technology. U2 in some little bar hidden away somewhere, anyone?

If any bands have done so they're usually encouraged to keep a low profile prior to the event so that "concertgoers" don't try to show up expecting to attend a concert and getting slapped upside the head by the realities of the playa. We really don't want folks just showing up to see a band.
That said, it was a terrific treat to see the gorgeous and wonderful Hothouse Flowers from Ireland play at the Irish Bar camp (Paddy Mirage) back in...'04?
It was one of the highlights of my LIFE, that show.

I think it'd be great for well knowns to play, as long as they did not publish that they are doing it. If they just showed up in some camp or stage when they felt like it and played something groovy. By publicizing it forces changes in the BM culture, which would be a bit obnoxious from people who've not yet experienced the past cultures of burningman.
Exactly.
Famous DJs or other performers don't advertise themselves at BM, and neither should bands. That's why I'm curious... I'm imagining Metallica, or Madonna, or Coldplay or Depeche Mode playing there. Hothouse Flowers are an international name (I'm from New Zealand, so haven't heard of any of the other bands mentioned so far. Just like you haven't heard of Goldenhorse, or Shihad or The Datsuns)

"Soul In The Machine" counts yes? (famous locally, though true in a different league than Aerosmith or somesuch) I love the music they do and the first time I saw their laser-light instruments & mega complex setup thought "I-can-hardly-believe-they-brought-this-out-in-the-dust!!!" I look for them every year.
My favorites are the little groups you wander across now and then, a drum or two, maybe a flute, guitar, random music encounters. I'm bringing the chimes back this year : )

There are a few, including classical.
I've spotted a few in disguise walking around too.

It would be a shame if I had to resort to self-deception to preserve my faith in objective reality.

How the @#$! did you find me? Please don't tell anyone we'll be playing burning man this year - we've been doing it since 1993, and it's just not in the spirit of the burn.robotland wrote:Okay- You're the bass player from Blue Oyster Cult, aren't you? In '96 each Oyster Cult member played inside a portapotty on different sides of BRC and broadcast the show on a secret radio frequency. Our drummer nearly suffocated. Since then we just stick to obscure theme camps with a decent bar.
Don't rear the feaper.

Im a number cruncher, and figure the following.
1 quart of vomit per vomiting episode on playa. on average i guess one vomit episode per person. (some none - some way more than once) 40000 people = 10,000 gallons of vomit hitting playa.
care to guess how much urine hits playa and not in the JOTS?
just an observation.
later all.

In the spirit of "talking to Ralph" and "worshipping the porcelain god", the new euphamism for vomit will be "contributing to the Black Arts Rock Foundation".Xhile wrote:why thankyou. How to find big name Rock Bands on the playa:
Cruise around looking for the hugest, most expensive RV out there....
You probably found a band, major sports figure, or a major drug dealer.
or maybe Bill Gates super nerd

John Tesh goes just about every year. He doesn't bring the whole violin section, of course.
