first timer to burning man zero seven

checking in, my name is Chip from Pacific Beach, San Diego, CA.
zero seven will be my first burn and I look forward to becoming a participant in this remarkable event.
I'm looking to hook up with other burners from S.D. area but their website is "not found".
I have questions about locating your camp on first visit.

What website are you referring to?

If you're staying at a theme camp or village you'll get a map when you go through the gate telling you were the camp is supposed to be. Simply drive up to that general area and park on the side of the road. Wander around on foot and talk to people until you find the exact spot and are told where you can park and set up.

If you are not in a pre-registered camp which most (I think) are, you should agree as a group that whoever gets there first goes to playa info in center camp and registers the location. You should decide on a camp name ahead of time. Everyone else can just stop there first, then repeat the above steps - drive to the general location and find it on foot.

thanks, Dork. actually, I am not looking for any camp in particular... just wandering how you are designated a spot if you are not part of a camp or group? Do you just filter out to the outlying areas and set up camp?
Since I haven't met anyone yet or gotten acquainted with any of the regional groups, I am pretty much on my own.
Though I am a ham and I notice that there is a burninghams.org that sets up a repeater camp for radio users.

Ah, I see. Theme camp areas are marked on the map and by physical markers - those are off limits. Everything else is free game, though the first few roads are usually pretty full by the time the gates open. Find an empty spot, talk to the people hanging out there to make sure it's cool, and set up. No shame in going on your own, but as a first timer it might be a good idea to hook up with some veterans. Many burners are still in hibernation - they will start waking up and organizing their camps in a couple of months.

The burning ham site seems to be linking to an email form on the Burning Man site that no longer exists. Try sending an email direct to burningham-list-subscribe at burningman dot com to get on the list.

Hello. I'm a HAM as well and located about an hour out of L.A. and about an hour and a half out of San Diego. In my opinion there is too much stuff to do at the burn to spend much time on the radio. I only used it one day to help guide a first time HAM-burner to our camp in a dust storm at night. We'll probably run a radio station if I manage to get the rest of the equipment running by then.

About the camp. You can set up just about anywhere. Stay out of the streets and ask the neighbors around you if they plan on using the space you'd like to use, then set up. Some areas are clearly marked off for theme camps that require a lot of space for what they are planning, but those should be filled by Tuesday.

I don't know about HAM-burners but gigsville is a large village with all sorts of burners in the LA/San Diego area. You can check out their mailing list. That's how we mostly talk, though I don't chat much on there. We'll probably do a few more local events before the burn. Some of us will be hijacking another event in Joshua tree the 19th and 20th of May and there'll be other madness. Gigsville is a big mix of people. I'm trying to bring out more nerdyness but I don't participate enough in the main gigsville junk to have much of an impact.

You can also check out the San Diego Burners Tribe on Tribe.net. It's got a fairly decent amount of activity, and you can connect with others in the local area through there pretty easily.
