The poet Charles Simic was once asked to describe his ideal city: "My ideal city already exists. It is New York. ... New York is the place where my imagination and my intellect are at home. ... I'm not surprised various religious fundamentalists and nationalists hate it. To see different races and ethnic groups work together and get along terrifies them since it goes against everything they believe. ... The revenge of the small-town bullies, village priests and provincial fascists has been the secret force behind so much recent history. They all dream of burning down the cities. What frightens them and makes them froth with hatred are the things I adore."

edited - NYC hasn't done it for me, but there is one city this makes me think of.

ROB:i can't believe no one's put this one up yet. tiara, this was your thread originally, right, from 2002?

Nope, it was mine, back when I used to talk more to people around here. 2002, correct, but Playaquest resurrected it before the 2003 event.

"I don't have to tell you things are bad. Everybody knows things are bad... Everybody's out of work, or scared of losing their job. The dollar buys a nickel's worth, banks are going bust, shopkeepers keep a gun under the counter, punks are running wild in the street, and there's nobody anywhere who seems to know what to do, and there's no end to it.

"All I know is, you've got to get mad! You've got to say, 'I'm a human being, goddamn it! My life has value!'

"I want you to go to the window, open it, stick your head out and yell: 'I'm as mad as hell, and I'm not going to take this anymore!'"

your statement is based on the presuppositions that:

(a) the people i know constitute a represenative sample from society as a whole.

(b) that whatever your'e measuring is present in a typical gaussian distribution.

i'm quite sure neither of those are true.
