I didn't get as much done as I might normally have, but family was in town and that was a more than ok tradeoff.

We did get the flywheel assembled and I'll post pics of that maybe later tonight. But I just read about something that I felt the need to post here, since it made me start thinking about ways to alternatively fuel the flame effect on The Contraption. I fully intend to learn more about this.

Jim Mason, who's work inspired me a lot to compile old equipment into a new invention, is the one who's name caught my eye in the CNET article and made me dig deeper into the Mechabolic projectmentioned therein. I'm blown away at the idea of this on such a scale and think that it could be incorporated, not only into The Contraption, but into my day to day living within the Louisville area fire-arts scene.

I'm going to stay on task for the project for '07, since I think it will take all I can muster to simply get it done as planned. But post event, I fully intend to take what I learn in the desert and put it into action in my own stuff.

I have approached The Contraption from the idea that it would entice interaction and play, and spawn creativity within my own local community, within the eplaya/tribe community, and with on playa friends old and new, so this quote, from the above webpage really struck a chord with me (underlined for emphasis):

The Mechabolic is a broad collaborative project, bringing together a variety of local provacateurs, who share the goal of artistically recasting the technology and cultural associations of alternative energy scenarios.

Where energy has usually been assumed to be a zero sum game of background "need fulfillment", we intend to recast it as an idiom rich in opportunities for creative self-expression, social discourse, and general sensual pleasure.

Ok...

enough of this worrying about the environment for a moment. Let's talk about big heavy things that spin and could hurt you.

The flywheel is done!!!

I wanted to have some bolts running though the laminated rings, both as a way to attach the spokes and for extra strength in the finished rim. So the first thing to do after removing the cast iron mandrel was to layout holes along the circumference of the rim. I marked six sets of two holes at equal spaces along face of the outer band. After center punching these locations, I set them up on the drill press to drill them out. Then six spokes were forged out and a piece of 2-½’ solid stock was drilled through to form the hub.

Image

Then the hub and spokes were carefully assembled and welded together and everything was bolted down tight with grade 8 hardened bolts. I did a static balance on the flywheel and it seems to be right on (note the weights welded to the inside of the rim just up from the bottom).

Here’s the finished heart of the machine, ready to be installed. It spins in it’s pillow block bearings very nicely.

WHOO HOO!!!

The odd looking ugly trike is the base..After three years on the playa it needed a full overhaul.. Just completed that today..Will start working up a wild styled generator in the morning.. The art work for the trike it self is almost completed..

The weather as had the other project stalled.. But I will be able to do some prepainting on some parts now..

We will all have to connect @ phil's camp.. You can haul my fat ass around the block..

How many RPMs do you expect to get on the flywheel?
It's going to be alright.

Unjon, have you checked out the stuff the bike mod camps have done?
They have done some of the weirdest things.
Rear wheel steering, front wheel drive, two wheel drive-requiring two to go.
"Everything is more wonderful when you do it with a car, don't you think?"
-girl by the fire, watching a tree moved by car bumper in the bonfire

It would be a shame if I had to resort to self-deception to preserve my faith in objective reality.

There is a project on the work table right now.. I has front drive and rear steering.. It's about 40% finished..

But first, Is a large contrapton to power a tiny generator to power an even smaller stereo..

What’s the next best thing to working in a machine shop?

Having a buddy who works in a machine shop!

The little item pictured below arrived Friday morning.

This is a one-way clutch mechanism that will freewheel in one direction and lock up in the other. Sometimes called a “roller ramp clutchâ€

I can see it all now, That new clutch arrives and he is running around like a puppy getting a treat, scoot'en his butt on the carpet..

I did'nt think of this until this morning.. I should have interduced him to the horse drawen hay mower.. There is so much action on them it would have driven him around the corner..

Great work...

Oddly enough my real reaction to old machinery probably isn't too far from that.

Keep playa dust out? You know well that nothing keeps playa dust out. Those little silly plastic thingys have got to go actually. In fact, I'm sort of counting on the playa to complete the project by getting into every crack and crevice.

And yeah, Tiahaar... where's YOUR contraptioneering?

Ha those little plastic caps wouldn't last long on the farm, they just get in the way.

All right all right, you guys are way ahead of me but no worries I have several somethings coming along. Unfortunately this past month has been fix-the-workbus time (mostly) so my big trike has stayed under a tarp for awhile. Can't decide whether to go all Mad Max with it or make a giant bunny...but its getting a swoopy canopy on top of some kind. The handlebars/controls and seat are on now though! Cast iron butt rest even : )
