Lets Get High!
Lets Get High!
Anyone interested in kite flying? I am bringing a small airfoil "pocket kite" and may get something larger to bring. I get the feeling that Tuesday will be a good day to fly kites on the playa.

Toolmaker,
I'd posted this link a few days ago for Jamm'in in the "Hello, Welcome... " thread. Thought it might be worth posting again here:

The New and Improved Black Cat... now with 25% more blather
Thanks.. I'll have to look for em out there on Thursday too. I was lookin at some kites today but didn't find anything that caught my eye. I had a nice Delta that I have to replace thanks to a tree. Haulover Beach here in Miami Beach has a kite store right on A1A that has some pretty wild larger kites tethered. One is a diver whose legs move like he's swimming through water. My parafoil kite is already packed so I know I'll have at least one kite to fly.LeChatNoir wrote:Toolmaker,

But while we're talking about wind/kites/windsocks, I was wondering whats worked best for everyone, regarding a pole for a windsock or flags?? Would fiberglass be best or wood..PVC?? any suggestions or hints/experiences? Thnx

We had a big one in camp.
I'm not sure what it was made of.
It had a lot of guywires.
Only blew down once or twice.

It would be a shame if I had to resort to self-deception to preserve my faith in objective reality.

Our pole was a commercial flag/banner pole, wooden with some type of nice burgundy paint, in segments. Attached it to the side of the trailer. It snapped at least twice. Once we took the kite off and put up the streamer/windsock it was fine.
PVC gets too bendy once it warms up. We've had good luck with old fishing rods, and I'm thinking the pricey fiberglass ones would do.
Bamboo, er, maybe, but it can be brittle once it dries out.

3 years ago we had a kite get snagged on the top of our tent center pole. It is two 8 foot lengths of 1 1/2" galvanized pipe plus 8 feet of 1 3/8 fence post tubing, with four guy wires. The kite was held up for hours until the wind finally let it get low enough so the owner could cut the string.
I am a kite flyer myself, but had little sympathy for a kite being flown in the city.

Who stuck their kite in my coffee!?!?!?!?
Pray for wind on the playa! I think you'll see more kiting activity this year at DOTA...not just on Thursday. Come on by. We'll have plenty to share.
