Canadian TV, Eh?

Post by gyre » Fri Apr 27, 2007 10:03 am

Anyone who watches DaVinci's Inquest might want to know that wgn started running the show City Hall that follows Inquest.
The first one reruns tonight.
It may be running on nbc as well.
As far as I know, this hasn't run in the us before now.

Learn how to speak canadian!

As someone who lives here, let me advise not watching our TV programming.

Well, maybe you'll find some decent documentaries.

But the sitcoms, and especially the dramas .... just don't go there.

Kids In The Hall was an exception, some decently weird & avant garde sketch comedy .... but yeah, otherwise don't go there.

You don't like DaVinci?
Much better writing than lawnorder suv.

How about sctv?
I loved most of their stuff, although there were a few weird canadian references I never figured out.
3CPTV was good.

What ever happened to that cranky old dude's afternoon talk show - I think it was called 'Webster' and was out of Vancouver?

He seemed to genuinely dislike everyone and everything and I found him quite charming. Oh, there was one exception: he fell head over heals in love with K.D. Lang. She was on his show well before she went national and it was where I first saw her.

Sorry I meant to add a disclaimer about how I don't like all that much television programming in general, so I'm kind of biased. I also haven't seen Davinci ... I've seen a few other law & order type shows - a friend of mine worked on the set of Intelligence and made me watch a couple of episodes - that put me to sleep.

I haven't seen much Canadian TV, but Sirius radio carries CBC (Canadian Broadcasting Corp?) - they call themselves "Canadian Public Radio." It has a hometowny kind of flavor even though it reaches a national audience.

Anyway, this last week they have been running various episodes of a seemingly academic-based program on the penis through the ages. Called "Phallus in Wonderland," it is at times historical and at other times hysterical, but is always fascinating.

It's a little like having the Firesign Theatre guys teaching a real college-level sociology class... kinda.

I've been pretty happy with the new series so far.
The plot is even more involved than before.
There are two more to run and then DaVinci's Inquest starts from the beginning on wednesday.
It is a deceptively involved show.

I've been watching Slings and Arrows on sundance too.
It's about theatre.

It's from the uk, but I want to recommend Green Wing to anyone who hasn't seen it.
It just gets funnier every time I see it.
Sarah Alexander from Coupling is on it, another great show.
She was on Teachers in the us and uk versions too.
You got to love her, she has a grin like a letterbox.
