Well I guess there is no time like the present to start! I'm really looking forward to it. I have discovered now that I know more people who go every year (or at least are going THIS year, but not for the first time) then I thought. It will be nice to have familar faces around for my first time, as well as to meet new and interesting people.

Hello All

Am a first time burner! From UK. Initially applied to do voluntary work(emergency psychiatric services - am psych nurse), am being advised not to do it first time! Any advice would be great!

Actually It is a lush green forest with a large lake perfect for sailing. Bring your sailboards and small boats. Motorized boats are not allowed to travel at more that 2 knots as that presents a hazard to swimmers,

Do not feed the sharks! They will hang around the wharf if you do. And do not swim near the whirlpool without a life vest. Two peeps drowned there year before last. It was a real bummer man. They closed off the whole lake to swimming. What a drag.

I was told that it was muy importante to have the proper foot gear because the lake bottom will "eat up" your feet.

Anyone have a good story to tell about that?

Feet are no problem if you wear shoes and socks.
My hands got chewed up the first year, but if you can keep the dust out your tent and clean your hands, you'll be okay.
A good hand lotion helps.
I have seen some with sunscreen in them which helped some, but I can't find one without some kind of perfume in it.
Neutrogena make a hand lotion or body emulsion with no perfumes or chemicals.
Take care of your feet.
You do a lot more walking than you think out there.

I've only had problems with my lips. After 2 days they are bloody and cracked and after another day the skin falls off and I'm golden for the rest of the time. I'd much rather do that, than wear chapstick for the whole week+. Just a little neosporin when the blood starts to get on my clothes and that's it. I always wear shoes and socks but I've seen some messed up feet.

If it gets dry, you do need chapstick.
I had no problem last year because it was so wet.

Unless the alternative is better, which for me is bloody lips for a couple days. And yes I do hate chapstick that much. Blood washes off easier than greasy wax gnarg.

If you can keep your sinuses open it helps keep the lips from drying out.
I use a saline solution with a moisturizer.
I hardly ever have to use my allergy spray out there.

Hello Everyone!
My name is Marzz and I live in Vancouver, Canada. I am a virgin Burner, but, know someone who has been. I will be going down this year for my first time!! I will likely be traveling alone, as my friend is unable to attend this time. I am REALLY PSYCHED!! as well as a bit intimidated. Does anyone have any advice on how the "camping" works for someone on their own? I should be traveling in a van, and have a lot of lists already from my pals. (not that I think I have any idea on what I am REALLY getting into)

When I arrive, how do I know where to go?

Welcome Marzz-apan.

As a lone camper you're faced with the task of finding your own camping spot. There will be no asking your fellow camp mates where they'd like to camp so you can weasel out of the decision since you'll have no camp mates. You're left to your own devices. You can camp anywhere that it looks like someone should camp and you'll probably seek knowledge from others along the way. We all ask so we don't offend our neighbors and have them bring unpleasant revenge in the night. Be careful though when asking for guidance because we like to lead the lost astray. You must let everyone know that you in fact know where you are going and they are the lost, who will be leading you. If you follow this advice you will find your perfect camping spot.

Also make sure to read the survival guide or your stay might be a bad trip.

I have read almost everything on th BM site, as well as the lists from my friend who has been going for a few years now. You sound a lot like him.

I can hardly believe that I am going this year...I have been thinking about it for at LEAST 8 years, but, for some reason (which I'm sure will be revealed at BM) it is pulling and calling to me this year, like no other!

I wanted to go long before I went as well. You should have a great time. If you like the type of people who build the crazy contraptions, there is a much higher density of them earlier in the week. Later in the week they are more hidden by masses of wacky partiers. So be sure to come early. I'd personally rather attend the first half of the week and miss the last half if I couldn't attend the whole thing, but I'm in the minority.

I originally was goint to go for the LAST half, BUT, my friend told me that the first days are by far THE BEST !!! I quickly changed my plans and will be attending the whole week. It sounds like the first days are far more calm and communal. Something that is right up my alley.....NOT that I don't like a good ALLNIGHTER as well.

For me they are the best. It is more communal. Later in the week we get more people who don't have respect for other peoples things. So early in the week you can run your camp like everyone at the event shares it. Later in the week there are so many people, that things that could be shared by all sometimes aren't enough to go around. You also get a higher density of people who come just to take and not give back to the event. Also as I said the builders lose the majority to the partiers.

The last weekend has the big parties and most of the burns. People want to get rid of what they have left so they don't have to carry it home. There are more people and everything is set up. So for some this is the best time.

Welcome to eplaya Persia,

That's cool that you wish to perform live in the desert... there's not enough live performance of music out there in my opinion.

If you're looking for a camp to gift your skills to, you could check in the "Theme Camp" section of the eplaya. If you're looking for paying gigs, then you're probably in the wrong place. Advertising on eplaya is not really cool and is against the Terms Of Service. Anything you share at The Burn should be of yourself as a gift to the community only.

Hang around. There's lots of info around here to prep you for the trip.

Hi my name is Amy, and BM 2007 will be my first. I once read about this amazing festival on some travel website, and have been hooked ever since... can't wait to go!

I'm trying to read as much as possible from the BM website, but its all a bit confusing - not sure what to expect really, but sure it'll be fun anyway.

I'm F, 28, 6ft 2" so, easy to spot lol :) I'm a graphic designer & currently work for an environmental charity in the UK. But leaving my job for a year to go travelling by myself & meet lots of new people.

I'll be travelling around a bit before getting to BM - June i'll be in east Canada, then Mexico & Ecuador, then onto Black Rock. Then will be sticking around for a bit to help clean up the playa or whatever people need, before wandering off to San Francisco.

If anyone can help with a ride share, or wants a hand with their art instillation, let me know :)

Hello and welcome!

The Survival Guide is probably the most important thing to read, then look over the stuff on this part of the forums and ask any questions you have.

Try to go without expecting anything one way or the other. It is a huge, chaotic event with different stuff in different locations at different times-- so what you encounter might be very different than what someone else encounters.

Oh, and something I learned the hard way-- sinus infections and playa dust don't mix well at all! (Being healthy when you go is important for enjoyment-- not that I didn't enjoy it, just at times I was pretty miserable and I missed a LOT.)

I can't help with the ride situation-- I'm not certain if I will be able to go this year (it is not looking too likely, unfortunately) and I'd be going the wrong way, anyway. (I am in Wisconsin, over by the Great Lakes.)
