Why do people get offended when you ask them the question *Why*?

*nodding in agreement* or maybe they think its a personal attack. Either way it's pretty hard to ask someone the big W w/o them becoming defensive.

but why would you want to ask them that, in the first place?

My tirade....

Post by Sanjanaclouds » Mon Dec 08, 2003 8:09 pm

Because I wanna know.

See how simple that was? You asked *WHY*. You wanted an explanation, and I gave it. It wasn't difficult, the world didn't end because I had to give a bit of an explanation, and the explanation that I gave (although a bit vague) provided a complete answer. Personally, I ask why because I legitimately what to know the thinking behind what people say and do, it’s a way to learn more about an individual.

Also, explanations are GOOD when telling people to do things.

You can't just tell me, for example, "don't to drink the water". I NEED to know WHY. The answer can be as simple as "because its dirty” but I have to know.

If you never ask you'll never know.

(the above was a bit of a tirade, I do apologize.)

From Jon Carroll
"The question "why" is even more problematic. "What?" deals more with certainties; "why?" gets into murky areas of philosophy. Ask the "why" question five times in succession and you'll arrive at either "because God made it so" or "we don't really know yet." "

That i think is why can be a problematic question to ask. Because it can be an attempt to expose someone's underlying belief pattern when they're just trying to make sense of this crazy world we live in, or to point out the limitations of their knowledge.

We all have curiousity about others, but sometimes that curiousity can cause damage to those others when we push it relentlessly.

I used to come up against this in fundraising for an environmental group. Some of the other fundraisers described their success after asking someone "how are you an environmentalist?". I came to the conclusion that their question served to confuse and/or shame the individual into feeling somehow inadequate (because they did not have a prepared and fully fleshed out answer), and then acting on that uncomfortable feeling by giving money. It was not a tactic i could adopt because of my concern that the donation had been manipulated out of them.

Was it wrong of those other fundraisers to ask that question? If their concern was to help someone examine themselves, then no. If their concern was to gain a donation through making someone feel uncomfortable, then yes. I guess it does come down to "Why?"!

In my Principles of Psychotherapy class sophmore year we had a unit on client etiquite. One of the main points that was taught was never to ask a client 'why'. They become defensive and distrusting of your intentions. Instead of asking 'why' one must rephrase all questions. Saying things such as "could you tell me about..." or "how did you come to..." and then put all of the pieces to gether until you think you know why and then say, "So what you're telling me is..."

Now thats all good and well when your in a doctor/client situation but in the real world its a lot of work if your not getting paid to do it.

"You see things as they are and ask, 'Why?' I dream things as they never were and ask, 'Why not?'"
-George Bernard Shaw

Maybe WHY NOT should be a new thread.
