Barbie Death Camp & Wine Bistro Returns!

Post by Dr. Pyro » Mon Apr 09, 2007 7:53 pm

Good morning campers! We're back! For the seventh consecutive year, Black Rock City's favorite concentration camp (and quality wine bistro) will be back in business. All of your favorite Barbiebarians will be hanging out in Wheeeee!Ville and if you don't come by and let us offend you in some way, well, then, uh, we will have to offend somebody else. And you wouldn't want that on your conscience would you? Of course you wouldn't. And of course Thursday from 6 till 9 (p.m. duh) will be the annual Eplaya/3playa Meet and Greet, probably the most anticipated party prior to burn night. And if you want to dispose of any unwanted Barbies, ours is the camp for you. So, what's left to be said? Goddamn it, come by or Barbie gets it.

Of course, she'll get it anyway, but what the hell.

So do you want us to keep you in mind as we peruse the local garage sales, or have you reached critical mass?

Mojo, though we are no longer actively soliciting for Barbies (we have nearly 1100 of them), we do happily accept any and all "donations".

And yeah, I think somebody did Barbie Death Camp last year...

CORRECTION!!!

A error made on my behalf..."Shiva Vista Platform" is not/nor affliated with the "Rock Opera Stage". 2 different groups of people building 2 different platforms.
Names pinemom, but my friends call me "Piney".

:D

Very happy to hear that you'll be back! We first came to BM in 2005, and ran across the BDC & WB - and just about fell over at the sheer chutzpah of the concept. I LOVED IT!! After touring the incredibly imaginative disply, we were also offered some excellent wine. I still have the cup that I saved from there. Damn excellent! Thank you guys - you gave me a great memory!

The only think I could think of as I walked away was "Can't let my 6 year old daughter see any pictures of this. She'll freak! She'll scream! She will not like it!" (Even though my partner and I did love it!)

Welcome back! Be good to see you evil bastards/fine wine makers again!

What WanderingGhost forgot to mention, Dr Pyro, is that we have our own interest in wine and barbies. Our barbies have a heartbeat though. Brainwaves? That's still undecided. More important though is the wine issue.

We make it! The whole lot of us (the five of us that make the wine) are going to be in BRC at the same time for the first time ever. We'll be sure to pack an extra bottle or two to come share with you and your 1100+ bimbos. Don't worry, the three guys of our "wine co-op" will bring their own bimbos.

I missed ya last year as I was poppin my cherri and all. Walked by plent of times with WanderingGhost and heard the stories. But still didn't stop in. Maybe cause I didn't have a bottle of what I would talk your ear off about under my arm.

So we'll find ya this year and get ya buzzed on our grapes. By the end you will most likely smile and call me a...

winemakers

Sounds like we should get a winemakers meet and greet together. BDC&WB has been visited by numerous cellar rats and winemakers getting their last fling in before harvest. I usually get back just in time to pick my vineyard.

A taste of summer

Post by WanderingGhost » Mon May 07, 2007 6:39 am

I just put a 3 gallon carboy of Dandelion wine down for its primary fermentaion. I've not made that before . so kind of waiting to see how that comes out. As Rat Bastard commented, we've made other wines (and he was too modest to note that we got a Silver in a local wine competition for our Merlot last year; not bad out of about a hundred entries. and us being new at this)

I don't think it'll be anywhere near ready by BM, darnit - but we'll bring a few bottles of our other efforts out.... maybe we should have a "Grape and Meet" or something like that - everybody bring a bottle or two of their work, and we'll all share a sip and compare notes!

Instead of Green, maybe we'll have a "Going Grape"??

Of course, we should all bring a Barbie to sacrifice, I mean, contribute.

More Barbies?

Do you all need more Barbies? We have our own mini-Auschwitz full of 'em, and would be happy to bring them along.

We always could use more Barbies. Bring them out to ttitd and we'll find a nice place for them...for eternity!

Now, how did we begin? It started by in 2000 when two of us got together and hammered 11 miserable Barbies into the playa with tent stakes. We had a little plastic oven that they were being marched towards and a handwritten sign "Barbie Death Camp" and just below that the slogan "Purveyors of fine lampshades and soap products since 1939." We never expected it to go any further, but in 2001 Frank, our vintner, thought that doing it again and adding a wine bistro (his wine of course, which happens to be excellent) might make for an interesting camp. So I went out and found about 50 Barbies at garage sales and Goodwill, had a large sign made up (you can still see it on our URL and we still use it) and all of the sudden the idea exploded. People were dropping off Barbies throughout the week. By 2002 we had 150 Barbies, by 2004 it hit 600, and by the end of last year we passed 1100.
I got the idea from an old National Lampoon which had the Pillsbury Doughboy (you know, Pop'N Fresh) and 10 other Pop'N Freshes being marched into an EZ Bake Oven. That's where I got the idea, having had 4 and 6 year old daughters at home. They were happy to relinquish their Barbies and the rest is history. Now you may say it's sick, and I wouldn't disagree. But since I'm Jewish, I pretty much can get away with the overplayed irony. It's like only Nixon could go to China; only a Jew could parody a death camp.

I hope this helps, in some bizarre way.

Doc, I'm a little disappointed you're jewish.
It doesn't seem quite so shocking now.
Maybe you shouldn't tell anyone?

Besides, I don't need to remind you that death camps are not an exclusive phenomenon, sadly.
Even Chicago had one.

When I first saw the Barbie camp, I was amused and horrified both.

I saw this on tv recently.
Two people go to see a famous photographer in LA name of Sam Levine.
When he comes to the door, he is clearly asian.
He tells them that when he first came to this country there was a lot of prejudice, so he changed his name.
"After all," he says,
"Who doesn't love a jew?"
"Everything is more wonderful when you do it with a car, don't you think?"
-girl by the fire, watching a tree moved by car bumper in the bonfire

It would be a shame if I had to resort to self-deception to preserve my faith in objective reality.

I am open for suggestions on more "imaginative" ways to dispose of our Barbies. Right now we are contemplating making a guillotine for a "My Size Barbie" (she stands around 2 1/2 feet tall), but re-attaching her head is proving to be a logistical nightmare. Your feedback is appreciated. Any and all sick suggestions become property of the Barbiebarians.

Have you tried concrete overshoes and water yet? or quicksand? or sharpened bamboo sprouts growing up and through them? or an i.v. hooked up to pure alcohol? force feeding them lard 'til they croak?

(That's all I have at the moment. I no longer have such things bookmarked on my computer, alas.)
