shade questions

Post by harley1200 » Fri Jun 01, 2007 8:39 am

For shade material I've heard parachute/don't use a parachute, Tarp and camo netting. What is the overall best or is there 5 gazillion different opinions?

and scroll down to Abodes on the playa for links to articles on shade.

There are several theories and no consensus as shade depends on personal needs. I have vitiligo, which means parts of my skin won't tan; those parts will burn, though. So for me, I prefer completely opaque shade on the roof. This blocks the UV rays which cause tanning (and burns) and the IR rays which cause heat. Thus, I feel cooler under my shade than under those that block UV but which you can see the sun through. So no camo nor netting for me. Many others get along fine with them, although I do believe one is hotter under covers that allow IR through. (IR is infrared, by the way.)

The Abodes on the playa links have lots of info on shades and how to acquire it. Be careful using camo netting that says it blocks 60% (or so) of the sun. If you double it over, you get 120% blockage, and you have to step out from under it occasionally to warm up. Much too cold at 120%.

if you really want to pimp out in style, a canvas tent covered in white snow camo netting and ventilated with a swamp cooler (clean cooler melt does great).
