We have made a deal with the Sands Regency for Burning Man! If you plan on flying into Reno or just staying over before or after the event, they are letting us stay for $74 on Friday and Saturday August 24-25 (the best internet deal was with Travelworm for $79) as well as Sunday, September 2nd; and only $34 Sunday and Monday August 26-27 as well as Monday, September 3rd (the best internet deal for those dates was $36 through Orbitz).

There is a free shuttle from the airport which runs from 6 a.m. until 11 p.m.

I'm probably not getting off the playa till Tuesday evening, wonder if that price will still be good. There will be at least 4 of us headed back and we generally spend Tuesday night in Reno and drive home on Wednesday. We have been staying at the Peppermill though one year we had to hit the Atlantis or something like that 'cause the Peppermill was booked (on a Tuesday after Labor Day?) or maybe we smelled too bad for them to give us a room or something.

Geekster, I think they are really going after the BM biz. Give them a call and ask. My hunch is yes. During the week should be the $30-something rate.

Oh, and skeetsh00ter, it is plenty early enough to cancel the Silver Legacy, unless you bought your reservation on Orbitz, or one of that crowd (Expedia, Travelocity, etc.).

yup...booked it through expedia...then noticed the price was exactly the same through the hotels actual website. Lesson learned. I think it's around 30 to cancel so it go's from being an ok priced room to too expensive pretty quickly.

I'll just have to meet you all at the barbie death camp and wine bistro. Me and my fellow camp mate went through and made a list of all the camps we wanted to stop by and BDCWB made it onto both of ours.

More layover stuff:

- Several of us are getting together at the Golden Flower Sat the 25th
for dinner. Last year we drank them dry of their Thai iced tea!

- I'm surprised I don't see more Burners in the Museum of Modern
Art. Anyone up for a visit Sat afternoon?

- Don't shop Walmart/Winco Sat afternoon, it's a mad house! They're
both open 24 hrs, so you can shop after dinner.

- Are there any other breakfasts as good as Pegs? That place gets
packed Sun morning.

If I might suggest The Little Nugget, just across the street from Harrah's. Their hangover omlette is great, and the bloody marys served with it are consistantly amongst the best I've ever had. This is a place all of the locals go to, the restaurant is hidden in the back, and the only thing missing is a CONDEMNED sign. Their Awful Awful burger is so much food I cannot finish it and the fries that go along with it. If you are laying over in Reno, this is a must stop for cheap and excellent food. WARNING: If you are a vegan or even a vegetarian in general, this is a lousy place to eat. Otherwise, go for it!

What he said, x 3.73M. And it reminds me of... well... a real Reno casino. Like the old Nevada Club (RIP)... or even Harold's (or bust)... Not like the WannabeVegas tourist traps now...

If ya never eat at the snack bar, you've missed out. And deserve to be much, much sadder for the loss.

Last year I reserved way in advance at the Peppermill for Monday (Labor Day) night. When we got there the front desk was incredibly rude. We had to park way in the back lot, which was no big deal, but when getting a lift from the security guard in their shuttle cart, he asked me how The Burn was and then said, "We really wish you guys would go somewhere else and give us a break".

Not sure if its grit in their drains or their shorts that's the problem, but I'll do as he requested and never stay there again...

The NMA presents an exhibition of 25 life-sized photographs and six mannequins documenting nighttime Burning Man costumes. For the past two years, Geoffrey Nelson has photographed Burning Man attendees in a portable, tent-like studio that he transports and constructs on the playa in order to capture the incredible outfits and extraordinary personalities he encounters there.

Hello!
This is our first burn and we will be driving up from San Francisco, spending Monday night in Reno at a casino, and then driving in to BRC on Tuesday. Since our car will be packed to the gills with everything we need to survive for a week in the desert, I'm a little worried about leaving it like that overnight in the casino parking lot. Some folks have suggested upacking the car, hauling everything up to the room, and then re-packing it in the morning. It seems like there's quite a few Burners staying overnight in Reno, and I was wondering if you had any other solutions or suggestions for securing belongings overnight.

Our stuff has usually been fine in the Sands RV lot, although one year we forgot to lock the topper on the trailblazer and my hanging costume closet was stolen. Bastards. I blame myself, the locks were right there in the front seat console. But no one messed with the trailer our the vehicle. Unpack? Really? woof.

I wouldn't guarantee no one will rob your car. It does happen. Louise and I have been going for 11 years (this is #12), and we haven't been robbed. Pre-burn, we stay in the (now former) TraveLodge with clearly identifiable burners with cars loaded to the gills, and we're unaware of break-ins there.

Post-burn, we stay in a casino and we haven't been robbed in either surface lots or high-rise parking. As AntiM points out, though, it can happen.

While we never unload, and many of the readily identifiable burner cars are obviously still packed, I'd say use your judgment and be comfortable. If you'll sleep better with your stuff in the room, go for it. Just keep in mind the amount of work. If you stayed in a ground floor motel, it would be easier than many elevator trips and walks down long halls.

Are the people suggesting unpacking veteran burners with bad experiences? Are they going with you to help you unpack and pack? :->

I think things are likely fine if locked in the car. Many of the lots are watched by hotel security cameras. We chain things down to our open trailer with the realization that if anyone REALLY wants to take stuff, it presents little difficulty.

I've been booking at consolidator GTAhotels.com and getting lower rates than other sites.

Also Saturday night pre-opening is the closing night of the Nevada State Fair. Can we get a burner to win the "Best use of Duct Tape" competition?

Purplekoosh, I do think they would be willing to extend the $34 rate until Tuesday. From my experiences with them in the past, anything they can do to take business away from The Silver Legacy, The Nugget, or Circus Circus, they're pretty much willing to do. I'd give them a call. After all, what's the worst that could happen?

Has anybody ever walked into a hotel post-burn with a reservation and been denied because they were so dusty? There's a 3.5 star hotel (name unknown) on hotwire for $44 on 9/2. It seems like the best deal going but I'm wondering if 3.5 makes too nice for my dirty ass.

Depending on how early you actually get off-playa, you might find yourself with a couple of hours to kill before check-in; I'd recommend a truck-stop shower. Well worth the $10 or whatever they charge you - the water pressure at the TA where Cryptofishy and I stopped last year on our way out was better than sex, I tell ya.

That said, I staggered into the Atlantis dusty, sunburnt, and just generally disreputable three years ago, and they didn't even blink.

Just got off the phone with the nice people at the Sands, and there are no BM-rate rooms left. After some shopping, I did find them to have some of the most affordable rooms around, though - $104 for 4 people. By the way, their website was going to charge me $119 for the same, so I saved a bit by calling.

Oh, I booked for Sunday, September 2.

If you are concerned with your return to the world pack a post burn bag with clean duds in a big ziploc, than put inside another big ziploc to ease further paranoia. I also dig the truck stop shower facilities. They have come in handy any time I have had a long drive. Usually get decent portions with meals there too.
