Joào Oliveira. Sorry, can't do the right accent with this program, it should be the tilde over the A...

Those who aren't involved in classical dressage won't know him, but he was the son of one of dressage's great modern masters, Nuno Oliveira. Nuno studied under one of François Baucher's students and trained many of today's classical dressage masters. Joào was my hero and I always wanted to meet him...dared even to dream, ride for him. Now I'll never get to.

Lung cancer got him. FUCK CANCER!! Image

At times like this words never seem to fall into the right order and "I'm sorry" really doesn't come close, and yet it seems to be the only thing we can come up with sometimes.

I think that phrase... maybe rather than saying, "Hey man, I'm sorry that you mom died", is really saying, "I'm really sad that you have to go through this, and even though we all must face it sooner or later, I still wish that all your days were just sunny and bright".

So with that, I'm sorry Ugly...

Randy Harrelson, fellow Oregonian LiveSTRONG advocate to the Hill, class of '06.

He had metastatic cancer that went to his brain. Multiple brain surgeries, rigourous chemo and the love of his wife, family and friends availed to naught.

Fuck Cancer. (I'm saying that so often I think I'll add that to my .sig)

Well, hell.

Nobody else has posted it, so I guess I will.

Sylvia "Dutch" Van Vleck, aka "The Postmistress", passed away from - yeah, like so many others mentioned on this forum, cancer - on the morning of May 25th.

She was my friend, and despite her somewhat misguided (yet always well-meaning) attempts to 'set me up' with mutual friends, I'll miss her for as long as I manage to hang around this here planet.

Like everyone who has a friend with a fatal illness, I too thought "there would be more time". No, there wasn't.

Let that be a lesson to 'yall.

Before she was "Postmistress", she drove us - kicking and screaming - to attend BM as "The Soup Advisory Board", where I had a wonderful time driving Ger's truck around, towing "Baby Doll" (a 12' boat which so did not belong on the Playa), and hollering "Masturbate For Soup" from Mr. Meagaphone. Oddly, some people did. Some right there in the truck.

While she hooked up with the Post Office folk, we Friends Of Sylvia concocted a scheme to make a "Buffy The Vampire Slayer" themed bar, which somehow has become vaguely popular. You wacky people - what were you thinking? Anyway, "Spike" of "Spike's Vampire Bar" said it best last weekend as we went off-road-driving with Grinn - "If it weren't for Sylvia, Spikes would never have happened." He said a lot more; I expected to say something - but, honestly, I didn't need to.

Syl, wherever you are, I love you. WE love you. Even those who had "drama issues" with you... the key word is "had". The love remains.

Even if you are not "somewhere better", I still love you. And always will.

Either way... it's all the same.

Hoist a Wild Turkey shot to Sylvia. She'd both appreciate it, and warn you about the consequences.

Mr. "And deepest respect and "kudos" to James "Col. Teddy" - who basically spent the past couple years of his life caring for her, gratis... damn, dude. Thank you. Not that I am the one who should thank you, but I do. James, honestly, you are a better man than I." Jest

This morning at 1:50am my last living grandparent passed away. She was my father's mother and a genuine piece of Kentucky mountain history. She has been waning for some days now and this was not a surprise to any of the family, even those like myself who were not at her bedside when she moved on. I had the chance to go and visit with her several weeks ago when she was still alert. We had a short, but very beautiful talk when nobody else was around and I’m glad of that. She lived a long and good life, and she faced the adversities of her time with grace and a chin up. And albeit slowly, she was in her kitchen (as she was want to do) up until shortly before her downturn. Her passing was not long or painful.

I will Cherish the memories of the times I spent with you as a boy, climbing the mulberry tree in the yard and throwing rocks in the creek. I will endeavor to put to use the lessons you taught me of how to treat others and always keep them fresh in my thoughts.

I'll raise a glass of wine to your life, though you never drank it yourself. And tonight a candle burns in your name. May it light your journey across the water to the other shore. Very soon I will come home and help lay your body in the earth, and when the day comes that someone lights a candle for me, may I have lived a life that would make you proud.

Sorry to hear that LeChat. May she rest in peace. I am glad you had a chance to visit with her before she passed through the door. When My last grandparent left it was sudden and I was away on contract. I wish I had been able to see her. She was 90 and had a new boyfriend.

Best wishes. You will see her again.

Look Both Ways

Post by gyre » Tue Jun 12, 2007 11:06 pm

I saw a very interesting film from australia about life and death called Look Both Ways.
It is focused on cancer but not alone.
It is dedicated to family and friends that leave us too soon.

Burner-pilot Berk Snow died in his airplane on Thursday. His wife suffered a broken neck but survived. I never met him, but we exchanged e-mails and he was a kindred spirit who flew a great many people around the playa.

For aviators, the poem "High Flight" never becomes trite or cliche. For you and your family, Mr. Snow:

Oh! I have slipped the surly bonds of earth
And danced the skies on laughter-silvered wings;
Sunward I've climbed, and joined the tumbling mirth
Of sun-split clouds - and done a hundred things
You have not dreamed of - wheeled and soared and swung
High in the sunlit silence. Hov'ring there
I've chased the shouting wind along, and flung
My eager craft through footless halls of air.
Up, up the long delirious, burning blue,
I've topped the windswept heights with easy grace
Where never lark, or even eagle flew -
And, while with silent lifting mind I've trod
The high untresspassed sanctity of space,
Put out my hand and touched the face of God.

One of those people would be me and out of all the on-playa experiences I've had that flight ranks up there as one of the best.

Godspeed Mr. Snow, Godspeed.

When to my fathers grave on fathers day with my mom.

Found out that the graves are only leased for two hundred years.

No rest even in death

I'm going into the fire with my ashes spread in my favorite places.

I'm sick and tired of moving when the leases expire

The whole burial thing always creeped me out. I just don't understand why so much is put into storing the remains. Its also a darn expensive undertaking. I told my family to process me in the cheapest possible fashion by cremating me and spreading the ashes.

Had a memory jog yesterday when I saw Don Leslie's Obit in the paper. Met him years and years ago (almost a different life!) and didn't realize how time flies until... well... Man. Ya know how ya meet someone, and then lose touch? Always had a smile, always a class act. (And he had the coolest tats...)

His claim to fame? He was a showman. Traveled the road since he was 14. Held the record for simultaneous swords swallowed (5), stopped for a while in the late 80's, then started doing the Tattoo shows, and went back to it a few years ago - shows ya can't keep a good man down.

Cap'n... you're gonna be missed by far more people whose life you influenced that you may ever know, but the world is a lot better for having you in it.

Just another reason to say FUCK Cancer. Damn...

The burial thing has to do with rebirth.
It was a criminal offense in roman times.
I think it was a sanitation rule.

Many people still consider anything other than burial sinful.

In the end, humans are no different than the rest of the species. You go right back to the dirt where you came from. Anything else is hubris, which was a crime in ancient Athens and I think a reasonable synonym for sin.

Not to capitalize on the death of a cop but I'd call the other driver and their passenger's deaths a kind of poetic justice.

It's amazing that whenever a police car is involved, the police never turn out to be at fault, at least in their own report.
If you weren't there, don't believe a word until you know for sure.
Maybe you were there though, Unjon?

Two charges of murder here after police killed themselves with bad driving.
One of them deliberately pulled in front of a high speed chase.

We also have police charged with murder after shooting all occupants of a car after an illegal high speed chase, including the passenger.

You can't avoid a police car, if you don't see it.

My favorite tactic is when the police jump in front of a car and then murder the occupants for assaulting them with the car.
At least one officer has gone to prison for murder in a case that was often shown on clip shows and charges were recently brought in another.
Death ruled homicide in a case where the car was cornered already.
And I think manuals prohibit this behavior.

What you can assume from a police report is that it was issued by the police.
Nothing else.

I'm not saying all reports are false.
But even honest cops are pressured to slant reports.

You can't tell by looking.
The paper looks the same.

Some police agencies are run more honestly than others, without question.
But a statement that something happened is just that, until it's verified.

The worst criminal any of us will ever face is a corrupt cop or prosecutor, because of their authority and the assumption of credibility.
