As a Christian burner my experience with other burners who follow the word has been nil. I have yet to have a religious discussion with any burner ive met (which in a way itself is strange as i luv talking about faith and beliefs with others), but ive had many many spritual interactions with many of my fellow burners. I find at burn my "beliefs" per say are unimportant, as a Christian who has some views that tend to be outside of exceptable church teachings, the burn is the one place I dont feel defensive or judged. Often with the kindness and openness of complete strangers and the willingness to help one another that happens on the playa, its the place I myself most often get a glimpse at the true face of Jesus.

OK, so I had taken the original post'er up on his call to give criticism of christianity, but this reminds me again of what I do like about christianity - that sense of "the true face of Jesus." (I suppose it could be Buddha or some other...) It can give a belief in humanity that reaches for something a little bigger than what we learn to settle for.

By the way, what happened to John the thread originator? Any thoughts John, on the direction the thread has gone?

So I was camping with this guy named shlomo and it was his first year, my 23rd and I was grooving on the newbie vibe to the max when all of the sudden he says fuck it and goes to center camp and like totally borrows this homespun robe and he starts tipping over tables and cursing moneychangers and laying on hands which fer shur scquicked some of the squares but it wasn't that inaprorpriate but some people were like so not into it and went to LEO and and they dragged his skinny ass from the center camp space for free expression he was all like "my father why have you foresaken me?" and it was profound and deep and it made me wonder.

It was the best impression of xtianity i'da evah seen, fer sure fer shure!

Because atheists BELIEVE that there is(are) no god(s). I think the Flying Spaghetti Monster idea best sums up the reasons. If you're not familiar with it, it's basically a stupid mythical creature to make a point. There is no more evidence that one religion is more valid that the Flying Spaghetti Monster and we know he's just ridiculous.

So what is Christianity's perspective on Burningman:

This one has cool background music:

To start this off with a little perspective... I am Christian i attend service regularly, and am strong in my faith.

So... After reading these articles it makes me question the intentions the religious right. Is it to banish all to hell and yell sinner at the top of there lungs, while the Catholic Church allows priests to molest and scare their own parish youth? In Jesus' words:

Let he who is without sin cast the first stone

and... First, take the log out of your own eye, then you will see clearly to take the little speck out of someone else's eye.

Can you tell me that these people are true Christians?

I can swear up and down that i can fly, but that all ends when i hit the ground.

People will claim to be something they are not. these people are not Christlike. And i will say that i am not either. How can anyone live up to that. But on the other hand i do model my life on what he taught and through the fundamentalism out the DAMN window.

rant ended...

While everyone's bagging Christians and Christianity just bare in mind that you're doing to them exactly what they do to you. You not only prove their point for them, but you show yourselves to be no better than them.

Just a thought.

Ironic that you use two bible quotes saying you shouldn't judge people, then the very next thing you do is judge people?

You have to make a distinction between judgement and discernment. Its hard to get by without discernment, but judgement tends to try to fix something in place permanently (good, bad, stupid, ignorant, asshole, sinner, etc.) That does seem to be one of JC's teachings (and Buddha, etc.) - to have compassion and understanding. One says the situation will always be that way, and the other leaves more room for change.

Its actually one of the many contradictory portions of the bible. Certainly a boatload of judgement and condemnation going on in those pages.

Burning Man is a bigass version of the "loaves and fishes" story. Just think lime jello shots -- two Sacraments in one. (I'll burn for that.) Irreverence is best.

Nice nice very nice.

Yes having sex with Homer can gross you out, but honey almost every husband becomes a homer of sorts at least in the pot belly. I swear my ex really was Homer.

if angels must fall, its always good to find a soft spot like a homer to fall on.

You're a Christian, not Christianity. I'm a baptised, born and raised catholic, myself. Don't get me wrong, I still think you're awesome (until you give me a reason not to, but that's the other side of the waffle).

I spent 7 1/2 years in a catholic elementary school (and was expelled on questionable grounds by a priest who had no real administrative authority in the school, was removed from the diocese, and has since renounced his faith) and four years in a catholic high school where my favorite subject was Catholic apologetics. Looking back on my education and watching my little sister (upcoming senior) follow the same path, I can honestly say I believe that the foundation of the catholic church is pure indoctrination and radical exclusion of non-catholic ideals.

My mentor and friend since 1999 has been my old religion teacher who was just ordained as a deacon. We often meet for lunch and debate and discuss catholic precepts. Now, I can't speek for the rest of Christianity, but the word, the law, the final say of the catholic church is contained in the Catechism. Any questions about the catholic faith can be found there. You can find it online, here:

http://www.scborromeo.org/ccc/ccc_toc.htm

It's an invaluable tool for catholic debate (or debating a catholic). Still, when you show the debatee the book, the passage, the paragraph, the section in the front that says this "is canon law," you'd be amazed how many will still tell you you're wrong.

As a sidenote, one of my favorite parts is the sex section. The catholic church allows you almost total freedom in the bedroom (or anywhere else) as long as it doesn't violate one of the ten commandments or endanger the woman's health, and ends with ejaculation inside the vagina.
I am the people your parents warned you about.

To the first paragraph: that seems to be a part of all religions. As an Hellenist, I don't agree with it. I do not and others like me believe that our religion shouldn't be pushed on the child.

As far as total freedom of sexual activities, I don't agree that the church is free at all and is highly restrictive: first you have to be married. Masterbation is prohibited: ejaculation is medically proven to be a very healthy practise for male organ function including reducing infections: ie. blueballs.

and you can't take your toys with you into bed:

http://www.pantagraph.com/articles/2007 ... 666726.txt

This woman would be a great worshiper of Dionysus- God of wine and pleasure: including self pleasure. When I first was introduced to the altars of woman that worship this god, I was shocked at first seeing dildoes on them. Nothing like the altars of Judeo/ christian altars I've known. Now they look very natural as our libido.

http://www.pantheon.org/articles/d/dionysus.html

I believe that BM is the reincarnation of the Festival of Dionysus: an event lasting a week at its height. It including dancing, music of course, the arts, inducements of mind altering drugs, wine and food. women had secret rites and gatherings, men had sports activities. performances of spoken word and plays. Oh yes, with alot of sexual interaction.

Yep, that's BM alright!
