Frybread on the Playa-free camp idea

Post by gyre » Thu Mar 22, 2007 8:49 pm

Won't someone who wants to cook on the playa do this?
Bound to be a hit.
Just hang on to that light stuff or the wind will catch it.

I'll wait in line for some. And an Indian taco. If somebody would do it, they could donate the WVO to Bentley Biofuel, in keeping with the green theme. They are supposed to be there keeping the generators fueled. Bentley's is where I get 50/50 biodiesel for my Jetta.

I'm confused... are you asking for someone else to start up a free fry-bread camp for you?

Are you volunteering Trilobyte? I think that was what you just did! Let me know where you'll be and I'll stop by for a taste.

If I could cook, I'd be making frybread right now.

You have a good recipe? If you post it there may be a better chance of finding some on the playa.

I don't.
Someone on here said it was simple ingredients.
It's just a matter of how you do it.

Frybread: Makes 8-10 small ones or 5 big flat ones for Indian tacos.

2 cups flour
3 tsp baking powder
1 tsp salt
1 cup milk
Deep hot fat in frypan or fryer

Sift dry ingredients. Lightly stir in milk. Add more flour as necessary to make a dough you can handle. Kneed and work the dough on a floured board with floured hands until smooth. Pinch off fist-sized limps and shap into a disk -- everyone has their own characteristic shapes.(Shape affects the taste, by the way because of how it fries). For Indian tacos, the disk must be rather flat, with a depression -- almost a hole -- in the center of both sides. Make it that way if the fry bread is going to have some sauce over it. Smaller, round ones are made to put on a plate. Fry in fat (about 375°) until golden and done on both sides, about 5 minutes. Drain on absorbent paper.

I love hot they just say "fat". That must be why it's so tasty!

The stuff I've had was very sweet.
I didn't put anything on it.

That picture looks good.
I didn't know you could put stuff on it.
Are the tacos near the playa the same?
I may just lose my mind.

Ugh. I'm trying to eat much better but I might have to try some of those. You're probably right about it being a cheap and great thing for people to do as a camp. Just make some huge vats of the dough and fry it up on the playa.

The ones I tried were huge and puffy and irregular.
It was at four corners and they were so light I nearly lost them in the wind.

If you're traveling I-40, stop for fry bread or tacos at Yellow Horse. You can't miss it.

Is that Kramer's Junction? I'm guessing there is more than one place people call 4 corners. If so, who was selling them there?

Good too.

That's the glorious thing about frybread; you can go savory or sweet. (Or throw the diet out the window and do both - start with an Indian taco, finish up with a piece covered in powdered sugar.)

Kramer's Junction is a place us L.A. folk pass through on our way to Burningman on Hwy 395. It just has a gas station on each of the 4 corners of the street and is in the middle of nowhere for California standards. It often gets referred to as 4 corners.

I went to burning man via LA last year.
I think I came back by 395.

It's about 2 hours from LA or about an hour once you get on the 395 from LA. It's likely you filled up there.

We stopped somewhere in the hills and I climbed out of the speaker cabinet I was riding in.
Maybe that was it?

I think it was Lone Pine but we stopped somewhere else and met some burners who were on their way too.
A gas station by itself.
Maybe that was it?

It's a lump of buildings. They have fast food places there too now, and 4 gas stations. It's not really exciting at all. Not a place you'd want to go unless you're filling up with gas. I was just wondering if that's what you were talking about. Not the type of place I'd picture getting frybread.

Krammer Junction/Four Corners is where 395 and 58 cross. I remember when there was just a four way stop at that junction with the AT&SF railroad on the north side of 58.

Why not suggest ice cream camps, or sex camps, or... ;)

If you do some looking around online for bannock recipes, there are some good ones out there. We've tried a few over the last couple months, it's good stuff.

My foster sister Rosie is from Four Corners and she makes the best frybread I have ever eaten.
