Kings Canyon & Sequoia Nat. Park

hey y'all....

My girl and i are thinking of heading into kings canyon & sequoia for a few days towards the end of july..

Anyone have any recommendations about routes or particular things to do there? we're big walkers, so are happy to trek a day or two to get somewhere truly amazing...

Any ideas would be most appreciated!!!

i saw this thread and have always wanted to trek up that way. i was looking around for some things to do and found this:

this seems like something you'd be into. there are five day hikes here and more stuff to do on some of the other pages.

If you have five or more days: Giant Village to Valhalla cliffs and hamilton lake, down the kern river and over sawtooth peak pass into mineral kings or do the loop from mineral king if you can't find someone to car pool. you'll pass a hundred people on the way to hamilton lake, but once pass it on the east side into the kern you may pass a handful of people: that was in 1980

Two days: you gotta do redwood mountain grove. Its 6 mile overnighter into a remote valley with a forest of giants and unsually low hiker visitation. There may be no overnight camping allowed, but there are so few rangers there that you can do a low impact bivi.

The forest here is very tall so thick that its pitch black on nights without a moon. While hiking there on a day trip. I had planned to be a the farthest point at sunset. when it became too dark to photograph. I started to hike back. when it became too dark to see with out a flashlight, I pulled it out of the pack to find that the batteries were dead. I had accidently turned it on during the hike. It was like hiking in a cave in total darkness. I could not even see my hands.

Never during the two and a half mile back to the car did I ever felt freaked out, but a calm came over me as I never veered off the hard packed trail as if being guided by the ancient trees. Somehow I felt the presense of when I was walking by them even though I couldn't see them. When I felt the sensation of their present, I would look up into the sky and see a vague silhouette of a 13 foot wide, 200+' tall giant against the stars. It was truly an amazing experience and as I never felt alone and followed the bends of the trail as if I had memorized it.

Only once did I became confused as I walked into a 10 foot high wall of a fallen giant that blocked the trail. luckily at that point, I had used my lighter's spark to flash in front of my cupped hand to keep me from being blinded from its intense flash to find my way around then continued without the lighter.

It was a mind expanding experience that no one can tell me that trees don't sense their surroundings or it might have been gaea?

Anyway, sequoia trees are one of the wonders of the natural and unatural world!

Hey!!

Thanks for the suggestions, both of you... I think the sequioas will feature heavily in our plans all right, and we'll have just come out of 10 days of meditation, so i think we're pretty keen to kinda wander where the crowds aren't, generally be peaceful, and experience the perspective that i'm sure being around largest oldest trees in the world is likely to bring..

Not that we're damn hippies of course, far from it, but nonetheless, we do enjoy our solitude and silence... AS for the time we'll spend there, well, we probably got 3-5 days, just don't really know yet, its very much dependant on BM projects and so on... but a minimum 3 i'd say, so a little more time than just day hiking...

specifically, the one discussing illegal activities...

overnight camping as you suggest would be consideted illegal.

Heya Greenwood... CHILL OUT.

Heli knows what he's talking about - he's a freaking ranger, you idjit. The reason they don't allow bivvy camping is you can fucking easily get killed if you make the wrong move out there in the wilderness at KC. Then it's up to someone like him to go out and recover Irish and his GF's body from a ravine, and maybe het himself killed in the process.

Ever think of that? When you get yourself into trouble by not following the rules, and are in danger of dying (and may well have already killed your soulmate by talking her or him into following your stupid idea) it takes someone like us (I go after bridge jumpers, so I have a pretty good and unique perspective on this one) to risk dying ourselves to save you.

Heli is fucking right on the fucking money. VERY very very very bad bad bad advice. Sure, he may be fine. Or his GF may get up at night to go over and pee behind a tree and take a last flight over a 400 foot drop.

And if that happened to them, I'd be really, really, *really* fucking sore at both AZ and you, because, current war between our camps aside, Irish is a damn good friend of mine. And my wrath, my dear, for injuring or killing one of my friends through dumb advice, is not something you really want. Trust me in this. And I happen to like AZ an awful lot, too...

I'm with you AZ! If I always worried about whether there would be a ranger to rescue me, I would never have done half the stuff I have.
Cool story too. I had a similar experience of losing my headlamp in my pack. Wasn't so pleasant though - bushwacking through the underbrush in Washington state - oh yeah, complete with Devil's claw and willow thickets.

Big tree groves are amazing though. Like living temples!

...just so you know, ingnorance, claimed or otherwise, of regulations/rules/laws is not an excuse for fucking up. For me or my co-workers. A regulation for no overnight camping could have been set and most likely was set, to protect the resource. Too many people, then you hear the whine, "oh, but it's just two of us", multiply that by 500,000 and you may see how it is.

Ok I grew up in these mountains. Spent all my life in fishing hunting and hiking them.
I will be fly-fishing for golden trout there next week. I have no doubt that Irish is smart enough not to follow bad advice. So we will move on.
Irish. You have picked in my opinion one of the most amazing mountains in the world. And like Heli and his hot spring. I am not willing to post locations of mineral spring hot spring, cave petrocliffs (sp) and some of the secret places locals know about. Not on a public form. (So PM me and I will give you some great places to go)

Hint the more south the mountain range the older the mountains but only to a point.
