Pee anywhere?

Post by MikeVDS » Fri Jun 29, 2007 8:25 am

I'm not just talking about the playa, but that is why I thought about this. I'm wondering if peeing on the ground is bad. Would it pollute the groundwater if everyone started doing it?

I'm an expert on this, inasmuch as I've peed directly on the ground. My best guess would be "no."

The earth is pretty good at filtering. Ever heard the ol' hiking adage that a stream running over fifty yards of rocks is pure? (exception: giardia) Those Brita water filters work basically on the same premise just on, obviously, a smaller scale.

Plus it would take a lot of pee concentrated in one specific area to reach down into a water table. Plus then everywhere would smell like the Paris Metro.
Irony. You're soaking in it.

Hillbillies..... of course it's pollution.

The urine smell around the Man doesn't dissipate from year to year. No amount of baking soda helps.

That's why I used to enjoy playing golf. Not only for the cursing, but to enjoy the freedom of peeing anywhere I want.

I'll try to remember to ask someone I know who actually would have a good answer for this. I'm just wondering if peeing in the yard is better overall.

I've read the book, "How to Shit in the Woods" and it suggests similar. I thought it was 100 feet from running water, but it's been a long time since I read it.

There are really a few different ways to look at it:

1. Animals have been doing it for years...

2. If there are facilities nearby - don't be a lazy ass - just use them.

3. It is raw sewage.

4. Remember - though disgusting - a human can safely drink their own urine twice in emergency situations.

That being said - I like to bring along a couple of 1 litre bottles of water along with the bulk storage. At 4:00am when you are woken up by the sensation of a tidal wave pee and you have those empties there.. well - it brings new meaning to the term "recycle."

That is my main question. On the playa, pee patches are an annoyance, but in my back yard, peeing in the dirt saves me time, saves water and extra sewage that needs to be treated. So why should I go in my toilet?

Pee anywhere?

I'm all for peeing outside in the woods but maybe not on the playa.

{{opening old school notebook}} Scientifically speaking, peeing in an arid environment is a bit worse than peeing in the woods; there's less natural filters there (grass, moss, dirt, worms, watershed, etc...) and less dilution, thus the smell would stay for a long time. And, remember that in the spring the area is filled with water and forms a lake that, believe it or not, tiny animals and plants live in. So, I guess, if you think about it, the pee would pollute their environment because even if the "pee" water evaporates it still leaves the toxins from urine behind. {{quickly closing notebook...}}

ooop... now I gotta go!

The reality of the situation, and this is especially true on Burn Night, that the entire playa is spotted like some sort of gigantic dalmation. Every 20 or 30 feet there is another foot-in-diameter pee circle. And I know for a fact that the women contribute nearly as much as the men as I have been part of a "shelter pee circle" more times than I can count. I don't pee on the playa per se, but I do make it a point to pee into Gigsville at least once a year. They deserve it.

Eventually, your yard will reek of human urine, assuming it is a typical sub acre yard. To make things worse, you are less likely to smell your own urine so you won't even know it is stank until guests point it out.

Now if you have 10 acres and you don't pee in any one spot more than once ... I guess it would be a different economy of scale.

Piss is generally sanitary when it comes out of your body. Peeing in your yard will make it greener and should not leach into the ground water unless you pee thousands of gallons in a short period of time. My agricultural experience tells me that your pee will not go further than 6 inches under ground and in that zone the plants that you pee on will be happy to absorb the urea and water. The agricultural term is fertigation(a combination of fertilizing and irrigation) which is a good way to fertilize plants. Ground water contamination by excriment usually happens arround large scale animal farms that do not properly controll the waste. There has been and continues to be huge ground and surface water problems associated with waste from high density animal production. I have heard that a properly functioning septic system only negatively influences the ground within 10' of the leech line. Drinking water wells can not be drilled within 50' of a storm water or sanitary sewer system in oregon. If you have really sandy soil with no plant life and no organic matter then don't pee. Otherwise go for it.

It's got a lot of salt in it. The danger with urine comes not as it leaves the body, but in the germs that it attracts as it stagnates. I'd guess that on the playa, the moisture evaporates before any bugs settle in - as long as it's spread out and not collected in some foetid pool.

I hate it when my flip flops become playa platforms from stepping into someone's piss mud. Wow, new word for the playa dictionary - pissmud.

my solution was to buy one of those long Glow Fur coats and replace the el-wire transformer with a 35w power module. When I needs to pee, I just let'er rip right there in my clothes and the special piss-wicking fur, combined with the superheated el-wire, evaporates my numero uno and keeps the playa dry as well! Im also not constantly bothered by those creepy single women!

Piss-wicking: nearly as gross as pissing in a wetsuit.

a better method of playa pissing for guys and some talented women... just spread it out so it dries up quicker. Maybe you can piss-write a message on the playa! A disappearing piss message is much better than a puddle of piss mud.

I fell out of my seat reading this. Evaporates his "numero uno". No wonder women don't hang around any more...

(BTW - I knew another guy who referred to his dingus as his "numero uno", ergo the hilarity in reading this...)

Worst spot to pee: in the pre-burn crowd, surrounded by your friends, pretending that's not what you were doing under that big fuzzy coat, then saunter off.

You bet I called her on it, she was so mortified when I told her to at least kick dust over it, I bet she didn't pee for a week.

Will you include a "pulse" or perhaps a "massage" setting on this shower head?

Peeing in your yard will make it greener and should not leach into the ground water unless you pee thousands of gallons in a short period of time.

Well, I guess that means I shouldn't pee in the yard-- my only super-power is that I produce at least 2,000 gallons of piss at a time, no matter how much water I have or have not drank! (Sure, some people get super strength, or the ability to fly! But no-- I get super-pissing! Sheesh!)

Well, gotta go!
