How would you Corporate Jam Tribe

Post by Green Wood » Mon Jul 02, 2007 10:18 pm

Tribe.net is way out of line with the ads. To first read then post a reply, you must wade though all the fucking ads.

just commerical profiteering from Burningman.

Nope, it's not Eplaya just brand X!

the ads suck they are definitely cashing in on Burning Man and the topics are same as here, some posted by the same exact people, but tribe is highly restricted on what topic or messages one could post.

I agree its not Eplaya just a plagerized profiteering knock-off of Eplaya!

It might interest you to know that there was a lot of talk from the LLC in the past about just killing this board completely and "letting tribe take over".

If not for Maid Marian, that's probably what would have happened. And yet this board and for that matter, this whole site, has pretty much been ignored by the LLC, and has at numerous times fallen into a state of disrepair, so they may as well have turned it over to tribe.

Even Andie seems content to point people to tribe:

I'm not really a fan of the tribe layout. I think this board is much easier to read and keep track of threads on. Maybe it's just because I'm still inexperienced with tribe. I'm glad it wasn't killed. Viva la eplaya!
Thanks to Addis, I had more free time.

Threads quickly become unmanageable on tribe once they're past a certain length, and good information gets lost once it falls off the first couple of pages of threads. I still go there for some of the more focussed tribes, but the Burning Man tribe is a mess. Even the move to heavy moderation didn't make it any more useful to me, so I left it.

Some credit should go to Spectabillis as well - he got the org to hand the keys over to us volunteers, which was no easy task.

Turning it over to tribe would have been in their worst interests and she was right to stop it. Good for her! The tribe has turned into an exclusive club and has reached over-moderated level to where free speech is censored. Oh did I mention the Ads?

That’s a good point about the lost information. You mean that old posts are deleted once a file gets to a certain size to minimize storage space?

Blessed are the Eplaya Techs for they will inherit the earth!

Not that I know of... I think the posts are still there, it's just really hard to find them.

yeah, believe me, theres a lot of stuff everyone would like to see done to make this site technically first-rate and user friendly. phpbb is by far the biggest holdup - dork and myself have looked over the new version to find its not going to give a lot of needed improvements.

different topic structures, better searching, different style options, better security, self moderation tools... even though phpbb is one of the better choices for a larger user base it also has big problems when the number of users and posts gets big.

tribe is different, both technically and socially because its purpose is supposed to be that way. eplaya kinda stays more true to what the event is like because everyone is crammed in here and forces people to work things out in the presence of chaos. this has additional benefit of making everyone in closer contact and an overall tighter community, allows a single place for people to launch into something new or gain starting or more general information, and is the default board that new people come to when finding things out and learning.

but tribe supports the differences between people better, allows people to group separately and form a collective expertise in some area - social, artistic, or technical. it also has a wider appeal of interests because its not just about burningman - even though thats its biggest strength and focus.

Best you could say for tribe.net is there's somewhat more white space.

Hats off to ya Specta. You took some stick during your tenure as moderator, but I thought you did a very good job.

Yes, Specta, thanks for all you do. I'm not tech savy (see, I can't even spell it), and don't understand all that's gone on. However, I think it's best when we have people who really care and are in touch making decisions about how we communicate and share resources.

Thanks to all of you who make this happen!

Please stay true to yourselves and your fellow burners.
Chillax, dude.
