I just ran into a guy who went in 2000. Strangely enough his first-hand account of the event is much different then what you all have said. By his (possibly skewed) perspective, 50% of the hardcore participators "must have been on drugs". This may be the thoughts of a closed mind which judges sober self expression as something so strange that it has to be drug related. How did this young man (24 yr old) come away with such a perspective?
With a love of wisdom and humanity.
We go to the desert in the summer,
by choice and not at the point of a rifle.
And we smile a bit there.
Of course people think we're on drugs.
(I'm still trying to figure out why we're in the desert myself.)
Burning man may result in drug use.
Wait till you go home and everything is so fucking boring.
The first party after the burn feels like slow motion.
Depends where you hang out on the playa too.

"Everything is more wonderful when you do it with a car, don't you think?"

It would be a shame if I had to resort to self-deception to preserve my faith in objective reality.

...another point of view...Last yr was my first...I know haahaha.I wasnt good at pretending to be a virgin.
But really my experience was SOOO wonderful that built in Chemical of pure all natural Euphoria, everybody smiling, hugging, greeting, sharing...
I think that might have been some of your 24yr old aquaintances sights.
People being truely mismerized that Utopia DOES exsist!at least for one week every year.
Then again, maybe his great grandparents didnt share the idea of "thats what the world once used to be".
Yes we've always had wars...but in the small simple little towns of
yestur-year, everyone knew everyone, and treated them like family, shared their harvests, bartered instead of Money, had Giant town filled festivals where the whole town got together and sang and danced...and shared a meal.Where everyone was filled with the spirit of love and harmony.
Now yes...thats a drug...one each and every person on this planet has the ability to naturally produce within our own matabolism.
Shit, I did it, giving birth to my 2 children...no "synthetic" drugs were used on me, at that point of no return(unbarable), I was not in pain any longer?
The body has amazing chemicals. Happiness also pumps those natural chemicals into you. Possibly for the simplest of reasons...by day 3 out in the desert, your so freaking happy and feel more loved then you could ever imagine, your body probly does emit some kind of drug like chemical
That may even have the ability to send off signals to passer bys, then their body starts to produce that chemical.
A whole new meaning HIGH ON LIFE!
The other side of the coin, yes there are people on drugs out there, just like in every town and city we all live in. People are synthetically high, maybe thats what they think they need, maybe the natural chemicals havent been used in so long along their family gene history they cant produce it, worse case senerio they start taking drugs before they ever know wether or not they do have it. Thereby cancelling the whole system out.

That is a great perspective you have there pinemom. All it takes for me is a camping trip on the weekend with some killer rock climbing and I couldn't tell the difference between old friends and the brand new ones. Happiness is natural and contagious.
I wish all a very happy BM 2007.
It may sound a little early but to preload the mind heightens the sensation.

Most drugs only trigger chemicals already available in the body.
Use of even caffeine can eventually shut down those chemicals.
I watched with tremendous fascination as the first studies done with mri came in showing the flatline effect on the brain after drug use.
The good news out of these studies is that recovery of these chemicals does usually occur eventually.
It can take a year of longer but you can take a picture of the brain reacting normally again.
Every emotion and feeling is tied to these chemicals.
I have a friend who has used drugs so heavily that every single friend he started with is dead now.
He has heard from others in recovery that his heavy level of drug use may take ten years to recover from, but he thinks it does happen eventually.
Right now he feels very flat, but is trying to look forward to a change.
His survival is astonishing really.
On caffeine-
The Olympic Research Center advises that if you stop caffeine use several days before you reach altitude and start again after your acclimation (about two weeks) that it has huge benefits.
Their concern is not the stimulant effect but the profound disturbance of fluids in the body that caffeine causes.
Probably many benefits as regards dehydration as well.
When you are in withdrawal to the point of getting a headache, take a small amount of the drug to taper off.
Nothing else will stop the pain.
A third of a can of a soft drink, for instance.
Most store brands and root beer is available decaf.
They also suggested that my first day at 6000 feet,
I should not run more than a half a mile.

Up until I was twenty two, I did pretty much every drug that I could get my hands on, with the exception of the various tranquilizers people take and some of the harder to get hallucinogens. I'm 28 now, maintain an A- average in school, and I think I get along pretty normally. I still smoke pot recreationally - I can't afford it, really, so I don't do it that often - and I find that I do just fine. I consume A LOT of alcohol on the playa, have coffee in the mornings at Coffee and Tea (they're truly a saintly people), and for the most part, have had a very hard time finding drugs there. My first year, someone offered me some E but I hadn't taken it before and wanted my first time to be with my then girlfriend. For the most part, though, other than some mushrooms, the pill I was offered, a bottle of homemade absynthe, and some pot (pretty rarely, oddly) I've almost never seen drugs on the Playa.
Coffee, I've heard, has mental health benefits, too, so I drink it but also fairly casually. I've tapered back from a pot a day (when I was in Reno) to about...I don't know...two pots a week. I've never gotten a withdrawal headache or anything. I do smoke cigarettes, though, which as far as I'm concerned is the most insidious drug available. I managed to quit a pretty serious meth addiction cold turkey when I was twenty-two and never touched it again. Nicotine...shit. I've tried to quit ten, fifteen times and never been successful. Concerning drug effects on the body and psyche...I think it has everything to do with one's personal physiology.

Thanks to Addis, I had more free time.
My humble recommendations
Don't buy drugs on the playa! They're overpriced and generally low quality ('cause they're from SF, zing!). The LE presence and lack of privacy also increases your chances of getting busted (bad) and giving the event a bad rap (badder).
If you're an experienced user you should know better than to buy from strangers in the first place. Coming out to the playa to try out unfamiliar substances in irresponsible and potentially dangerous. The volunteer EMTs shouldn't have to deal with your freaked-out ass.

Chai Guy's Drug PSA for Burning Man 2007
Hey Kids! Drugs are bad Mmmmm.. kay??
If someone approaches you and asks you to "trade" one kind of drug for another kind of drug, that person is a police officer and he or she (yes, soemtimes they're hot chicks!) will arrest you (or more likely just write you a ticket). In fact, you don't even have to produce the drugs, just say "Yes" and they'll cuff you, take you back to your camp and search your tent/car/camp whatever.
If someone approaches you and asks if you know where to find drugs, and you tell them, "Go ask at camp XYZ", you will probably be arrested (or be given a ticket) for "conspiracy to traffic in narcotics".
If someone offers you a ride on their really cool art car and then asks if you might have any "gifts" to share and hints that drugs would be a nice gift, that person is a police officer...blah, blah, blah...
Remember, the cops out there have been going to Burning Man longer than you, they have better costumes, and they have cooler art cars than. Remember that the cops out there can be NAKED when they bust you! (it's happened!)
And if you go to the playa this year, and light up a joint under the man and get caught or if you do anything I've mentioned above, and then come back here and complain that you were the victim of entrapment or something, I will laugh at you.
And now you know, and knowing is half the battle!

Decide for yourself if you are the buzzkill guy at the party that ran his mouth and invited the narc.
Same here......... Even i wonder people just give some stupid reasons for taking drugs....... better beware of drugs

i'm sorry folks, but lets not tippy toe around this.
i would estimate there is half a million "hits" of X, half a million tabs of acid, and literally, at least of ton of Nug-Nugs at the start of the event all total from all campers.
add to that the huge amount of cocaine first camp has and you have a PLETHORA of substances.
i for one GORGE myself on any and all chemicals i can get my dusty hands on and there are many like me, an army of fiends.
so lets not lie to appease whatever image or avoid any stigma, or pretend like we dont know the LEO's are on this board, they are... (hi tom) and call a spade a spade.
there are a LOT of fucking drugs on the playa ranging from cigarettes to heroin, and that's just how we do, so deal with it mr. straighty.

You forgot to mention the million gallons of government sanctioned (and taxed) alcohol that will be flowing through BRC. Apart from the obvious and lame response that it's legal, I'd love for someone to try and argue the difference between booze and other substances.
Simon, I applaud your honesty and your very large balls.
oh wait, sorry, that might hurt (unless you're into that).....how DO you guys walk around with those things?

i've always wanted to try that whole glue a helmet to a bridge thing like on tv and see if it works.
yes, i AM one of those people they put disclaimers like "do not try this at home" or "trained stuntmen" on the bottom of the screen for.

You can really tell you're getting old when you have never even heard of the new and exciting drugs that are popular in today's culture.
What ever happened to acid, x, cocaine, pot, mushrooms and black beauties.

I'm 61.
Maybe I'll get lucky at BM this year. Though I'm not so sure BM is the right place to try mind altering substances for the first time--especially not knowing how one might react. I would never want to find myself having to be administered to at the med tent.
Not to mention that I've gotten a lot more cautious in my old age. It seems like the only drugs I do regularly now are viagra and my blood pressure meds! LOL

I love to think that there aren't people fucked up at Burning Man but then i open my rv door and look outside. Fuck, there are a lot of druggies and they party their asses off. More power to them.
Seriously, i love to get wasted too but not as much as i used to back in the day. I used to be able to party for days on end without any blow. Those were the good ole days.
I like to drop some stuff here and there at BM but the days of walking around safely with drugs on you at BM has ended. Kinda a fucking shame if you ask me. It sucks having to do whatever you decide to get fucked up on in your rv and then head out for the night. I liked the old days of walking around with a pocket of goodies and a bunch of beer in my backpack.
Nothing better than eating some shroomies right before sunrise. It makes for a beautiful day !!
