Whatever.
I expect you people will be pounding on Marian's door demanding a list of all writers, photographers & spokesmodels attending Burning Man this year so you can give a thumbs-up or -down.

Firstly, uBeRpLaYa, nice ass.
Secondly, look around the playa and your sure to find someone to be offended by, if that's what your looking for.
Personally, BM seems to me the most civilized place I've ever been, and it's generosity of spirit in sharing itself with all, even assholes, is a big part of it.
It would be my hope that even this degree of self serving nonsense might actually bring more attention from the outside world to the event and the true values of civilization, human decency and creativity it embodies as a whole.
Let the cameras come and see how it is possible to live in the most diverse population possible with joy and concideration. Let them make their money--off the playa--. Maybee joe NASCAR might just drop a beer and have a thought about a more inclusive way to live.

I don't think the problem is with you bringing cameras in and making a documentary. That has done many times with some incredible results. The problem is that you come in knowing nothing. It appears you have not done any research at all. If you had your s*** together we may have been a little less hostile. We still don't like it, but we may not have attempted to shove your head all the way down your throat. Just most of the way.
You really really screwed up with this poor excuse for a show host lars. It appears he has never been to burning man before. Yet he is going to sit in front of a camera for an hour and tell everyone how much he knows about the culture. He doesn't know s*** about the culture. I don't want to hear about burning man from someone who has only been there for a few hours. He will also never be able to "emerge" himself in the culture, because he will be way to busy worry about how this shot looks. Get a clue, no one cares about how "cool" lars is.
You don't know anything about burning man, and we don't want to hear your's or lars' opinion on burning man. Go for a year, and really experience it. If you truly are a discovery channel show i'm sure they could spare a few grand for you to go do "research."

They won't come in knowing nothing - they have the entire archives of the Dickscovery Channels previous exploitations. Doesn't mean they won't continue to exploit; just means they have the corporate experience of BRC and some good ideas just how to exploit the shit out of it even better and still keep within the constraints of whatever agreement they sign with the llc this year.
In fact, I expect it to be worse than last year. Far Worse. I think the point is for dorky lars to really make fun of those fucking strange, bizarre drug addicted freaks known as burners so the public can stare at us, generalize about us, and stereotype us as bizarre sideshow fodder, just like on Jerry Springer, to generate revenues. At least Jerry pays his freakshow guests to be on his stage. THIS stage, YOU get to pay to be on it!
Yeah. All you are, dear burners, is a Springer-esque Rating booster stage show.. Ain't ya happy???

god man besides anything else your timing sucks............if you'd even had a quick look at the board you'd have seen all hell breaking loose........so you decide to poke a rabid dog with a stick....good move.... wait till you hit the playa!!
Dust. Anybody? No? High in fat, low in fat? Dust. Anybody? No? Dust. Anybody? No? Dust. Anybody? No? . It's actually very low in fat. You can have as much dust as you like.

Well said...Flammepus wrote: I think that the real problem with folks who want to come to BRC to produce commercial media is that they have not been to burningman before. To them it just looks like a fantastic opportunity to tell a compelling story (blah, blah, blah). If these folks were actually part of the burningman community, they would understand how offensive the concept is to us as well as how ignorant the proposal sounds (i.e. what is this ritual that these folks are going on about? Are these guys talking about my monkey dance, the Drag-races, the sacremental consumption of Larry Harveys Hat with shot glasses of LSD? Inquiring minds want to know!). Coming to do research for your Ph.D. in cultural anthropology? Good luck. Coming to do a TV production that will be aired between Mtn. Dew, and Cheesy Puffs commercials? Fuck off.

Well, I appreciate all of your opinions and I’m going to leave this forum. But, if anyone has any info on tattoos, scarifications, or any forms of permanent body art at Burning Man, please let me know. I’m [email protected]. Thanks a lot.
If he were the only fucktard I might agree, but I fear that is not the case.
Probably better to just keep an eye out for camera crews. Ask them what they're filming for, and if you don't like the answer tell them clearly and calmly that you do not give permission for them to film you. One of the Discovery Times crew (or at least that's how he identified himself) flagged me down in my car and said the producer would love to talk to me. I simply said it wasn't going to happen, and drove off.

"I'm sorry but you do not have my permission to use my voice or image".
And walk away.
DO NOT hang around. If they walk into your camp, and you don't want them there, tell them this and tell them to leave.
OTHERWISE - Use the opportunity to make them look foolish... Tweak their nose... Ask them questions... Put them on the spot in front of their camera. Threaten their manhood. Use their assininity against them.
They WILL be there. this was your warning Dorkscovery will be on the playa. BE PREPARED.
...And... um... good luck!!

Option number one is by far the best. The person with the camera and editing equipment will always win the exchange of wits in the public forum.Bay Bridge Sue wrote:"I'm sorry but you do not have my permission to use my voice or image".And walk away.

i didn't realize the community was at war with the world. after reading this thread, i would say the e-playa community has alot to learn about acceptence. this is Larry's party, and he makes the guest list, if you don't like the possibility of the discovery channel on the playa, then maybe this isn't your year....
BM has always been about non-judgemental acceptence, don't worry about whos on the playa, just have fun and leave the politics to the ORG....

The org will cave, it's only a matter of how long till they do if recent history is any indication. If there's any resistance to the media invasion from the ORG it would be nice to see it on display in some fashion. At this rate we're going to have to start protesting by sending the BM office gummy worms...they represent creatures without backbones which seems to reflect the mindset of the ORG's media relations department of late. Got cameras? Got cash? Come on in, BRC is yours for the taking!
I'd love to be proven wrong here...but I won't be holding my breath waiting for it.

the last thing I want to see is myself engrossed in another hour of the idot box and watch my naked ass riding by on the discovery channel. the thought of more mass media and camera's at burningman is unnnnnnerving. I am entitled to now becoming part of some other person's reality TV show. not to mention, when I run for president, I prefer not to see my naked ass riding by on fox news.
My other vehicle is a mutant.
Re: Wake Up Call
Burningman is all about 40,000 different things, one for each person who comes. But your expectation that it's a, "culture of accepting, open minded individuals," is way off. The burn is not a Rainbow festival. You won't find acceptance there. You may find some folk who like what you're doing, and others that don't. And the odds are good that the ones who don't will let you know how they feel. Often at the top of their lungs, through a bull horn, while twisted on various substances, and in course language. After all, the burn is an event where, "heckling," is an officially recognized art/performance that folk can register with the Org.Discoveryhalfyard wrote:... Secondly and most importantly, I am totally shocked by most of your responses. I came to this blog expecting a culture of accepting, open-minded individuals – what I’ve understood the aura Burning Man to represent. But instead, I’ve been bombarded with an array of ridiculous attacks from bloggers so eager to criticize, belittle, and shut down a creative idea that it makes me question what Burning Man is all about.....
So come if you want to come but my advice would be to do so without expectations of how you will be received. Create your acceptance within yourself and you'll be fine, look for it from others and you may very well be disappointed, especially at the burn.

Re: Wake Up Call
I'd say burners tend to be very tolerant of what they like, and very intolerant of what they don't like. And very willing to share their thoughts on the latter.Dork wrote:...
That shows what little you know of Burning Man. People at the event are generally very tolerant towards things like body modification and other unusual modes of self-expression, but very intolerant towards corporations and attempts by the media to take advantage of us.

To all veteran burners-
To me this seems like and awesome opportunity to educate someone who can educate a whole crap load of people about our amazing culture.
So instead of just shunning this person right away why don't you try to open their eyes a little to burningman. they are comming to learn right? they still are comming to expirence right? Why don't you show them the true spirit instead of being a jaded ass hole who is just going to turn their back.
Doesn't seem very burning man, the attitudes I am reading on this board.

I wouldn't be too quick to assume camera crews would be acceptable at the rainbow gatherings. I suspect they would have a much harder time than at burning man.Ron wrote: Burningman is all about 40,000 different things, one for each person who comes. At least one person went to the hospital after exhibiting unacceptable behaviour.
Burning man has a much wider range of attitudes.
Even so, tattoos are so last century.
If you try trepanation in the desert I'll be impressed.

IMHO it's important to remember that this board doesn't even represent a full 1% of the participants who attend the event. Consider treating it as a slightly...ok very biased resource from a very vocal minority and be done with it.trypical wrote: Doesn't seem very burning man, the attitudes I am reading on this board.
As for the cases of a--holitis on full display it's very entrenched here and many have tried...and failed to make changes. Short of the LLC pulling the plug on the place or the hatted one himself asking for changes, I doubt there's a powerful enough character available that can clean this place up. In short...it is what it is.
1) Why do I need to educate anybody? Particularly someone who will profit from commercializing a "no commerce" event? Why would I want to advertise this event? So it will grow by another 40,000??????trypical wrote:To all veteran burners-

2) They are NOT coming to "experience", they are coming to PROFIT.
3) Who the hell told you you know what the "true spirit" is? Take that back to a Rainbow Gathering.
4) Jaded Asshole - thank you. Coming from you, I will take that as a compliment.
My repsonse to mojo-
(in the words of the dude) Can you just take it easy man?
I don't know why anyone is surprised that burning man has grown to 40,000. If you create something that has that positive of a vibe, you are going to draw a fuckload of people.
I am just thankful it still exists. despite those who try to use it.
