I hear they're trading in one of the water trucks this year for a pickup with a seat attached to the tailgate...

Follow *this* water truck! ha ha ha...

Louise and I just got back from the playa, and we were at the location of center camp, so we walked and drove around for an hour or so. There is no trace of any urine spots out on the playa where the man has been.

(Well, I'm saying we were at the location of center camp. The crew was out there setting up for communications, they said it was center camp for 2007, and our GPS said 40.76684, -119.22770. I've forgotten which datum we're on. They said we couldn't camp with them, so we camped at 40.78328, -119.25458.)

Fire up Google Maps and place this Lat/Lon in the search bar (yes
it's a little known fact you can do this with GPS Data)

1. A map appears that when zoomed in has an ariel photo of 2005
Burningman.

2. Arrow for the new centercamp is about 600 ft due north of the
visable 2005 centercamp.

Way cool

Yeah, but I may be on a different datum than them, so I'm off from where Google places Center Camp. It may be that I was where Google says Center Camp is, but my datum was off by however many feet my arrow is out of Center.

Actually, that is a photo from last year. It's been there for months now and is far more detailed than the other satellite shot that everyone was so hyped about. So if that is the location of Center Camp this year, what happened to the alternating locations every other year thing, as outline in the BLM documents? Just curious

*woof* :-P
A plan is what you vary from.

Destiny Lounge 3D will be at Bradbury and 3:15 this year as a part of the 404: Village Not Found group of camps! Come see us!

Right, though I like the deeper-into-the-desert 2006 spot more anyways. Phil! The playa looked nice and solid in your photos, are we going to have a good hard surface this year?!

Until we get there. :-> We had some stiff winds while we were there, and no dust blew except on the "road" on the southeasterly side of the playa (near Frog Pond) where the playa has been powdered by traffic.

We tried to drive to Black Rock, but the van started slowing down in spite of me pressing harder on the gas pedal, so we took that as a sign of mushiness and turned slowly back around. The southerly end of the playa is in fine shape, though, as far as we could tell.

I expect after 40,000 of us have driven in and tromped and biked the crust, it'll be the fine powder we all know and love, but I'd give it an A.

Verified, The Google satellite map is BRC 2006. Not 2005 as I thought.

The 2006 Man's center is within 25 ft of published coordinates (WGS84)*
Traces of 2005 BRC are visable to the south west.

This suggests that BRC 2007 may be the same location as BRC 2006.
- that's if Phil can verify his GPS is in WGS84 coordinate mode.

The Man's coordinates for past 2 events are:
THE MAN 2005 lat="40.754767" lon="-119.236418"

THE MAN 2006 lat="40.76923" lon="-119.22006"

* The other commonly used US system is NAD27 often with topo maps.
Skied with a a GPS last year till it broke. 2 days later broke my right
leg at Kirkwood. I'st ski injury in 25 yrs.
Mostly well now.

It was NAD27. I've since switched it to NAD83, which I think is all that's availble on this GPS. I'll have to see if it's got WGS84.

I don't know enough about the datum models to know which is preferred and why. Guess it's time for Google.

Yet another silly datum check:

From a topozone.com map the playa 3 mile entrance is at;
40.6969 -119.3513 (NAD83/WGS84)

Reentering these numbers as NAD27 moves the pointer 300 ft
to the west. Not a lot ! Beginning to look like your numbers
would place the event where it was in 2006.

Don't know what differences, if any, exist between NAD83
and WGS84

Um - people or bears were peeing there!

Actually the approach to Blackrock Hot Springs is tricky
since you go near the Quinn sink. That's where all the streams
in the NE corner of the playa sink or disappear into the ground.

This is an exceptionally dry year and in late January I drove 30
miles across a DRY ! playa to Double Hot Hot Springs.
Double Hot is 5 mi NW of Blck Rock HS. The next week it rained a lot.

BRC location

On the 4th we camped with Tech camp for a night. My GPS was on WGS84 map datum. My "camp" was about ~200' north of their perceived center and read N40.76702 W119.22787 on my GPS.

They indeed said that this is approximately where center camp would be this year.

When I load this into Google, it lands about 300' north of the actual center of center camp. I'd say it's pretty damn close!

I was there on the fourth as well, about a quarter of a mile southwest of the Tech camp. According to my GPS, they were really close to last years NOC tower which was right next to first camp. I'd say 300' north of the center of center camp is pretty exact.
