Max Wind Speed on the Playa?

Post by djzip13 » Wed Jun 27, 2007 12:10 pm

I'm looking for the max wind speed on the playa. I'm building a major art car and need to do some engineering calculations with the max wind speed.

Its pretty sad, I've been there 6 years and can't really guess the answer. I know the dust storms can be violent, but can't figure out what that calculates in wind speed.

Thanx for the help!

Thanx Bob! I was guessing 50-60 mph, so I wasn't too far off.

I hate to admit that Bob's right. In 1999 winds were clocked at 72 MPH.

In '99 very early in the week (i.e., VERY few people around), I saw wind blow over porta-potties and watched a couch rolling across the playa during the worst of one particular windstorm.

Back in the 90s before it was leave no trace, an acquaintance reported opening a can of soda and holding it shoulder level to pour - the wind was so hard (how hard was it?) that the liquid never hit the ground.

In 2003 or 4, we had winds well over 90 perhaps 100 after the event.
my legs were bleeding from sand particles. the cheap walmart tent was ripped down the middle and a sand dune 2' high almost surrounded it.

Faster than a speeding yahoo.
More powerful than a locomotive art car pulling a house.
Able to leap thunder dome in a single bound.

Look! Over there in that dust storm!
It's a stilt walker. It's a giant flower art car. No! It's Max Windspeed!

Yes, it's Max Windspeed - strange citzen from another state who came to Black Rock with powers and abilities far beyond those of mortal shirtcockers. Max Windspeed - who can change the course of charging frat boys, bend steel rebar with his bare hands, and who, disguised as robotland, mild mannered robot builder for the great metropolitan Black Rock City, fights the never ending battle for APOKILIPTIKA Terminal City and the burner Way.
