East Coast strays! Come home with me!

Post by fre » Tue Jul 03, 2007 10:10 am

I'm in Baltimore, and more than likely either taking the Greyhound or flying to the West Coast (San Francisco or Oakland, CA). If I choose to fly, I'm going to search for the cheapest city on the East Coast to fly from (taking into account that I'll probably use the China Town bus to get there) and go there. Once in San Francisco, I'm meeting with friends and we'll be renting a big van and possibly a small trailer to take our gear. Adventure!

Does anyone still need to make their travel plans and want to coordinate? I can't offer any space in the rental van or trailer, but if there were enough of you, you could do the exact same thing that I'm doing with my friends. Also, as my group figures out the cost of things, I would be willing to share info. I'm mainly looking for people to book the same travel plans with me, see if we can get a small contingent on the same bus/flight.

I'll share the traveling information that I have so far: I'm planning on leaving August 19 or 20. Greyhound, roundtrip, from pretty much anywhere is $218 if purchased at least 2 weeks in advance. To fly, the price range as of today (and I suspect that it'll change) is $290-340 depending on where the flight leaves.

Things to think about:

- Although taking the bus is cheaper, it takes 3 days to get across, and you'd have to think about victuals. I would pack food, because you don't know when or if they'll actually stop, and if so, what the choices are. Eating mystery meat and being stuck on a bus with food poisoning (read: diarrhea) is not fun, and eating on the road can cost a pretty penny.

- Taking a flight out of dodge is indeed quicker, but it seems as if the prices change a lot. also, to travel in a pack is harder, because the cheapest tickets always seem to be hard to get in a quantity over 4 or 5. Upon further investigation though, it seems as if some of the "separate" flights are the same one. Also, sometimes we could choose seats together, sometimes not. I guess with flying, companionship is not as necessary.

I'll be coming from the Pittsburgh area. Would you like to meet up and skip the bus?

I think my husband and I going to drive and another person or two to help pay for gas would be swell. I have to be at work the Friday before and the Tuesday after, so it's a tight schedule, but we'd be free to take our time within those constraints.

We've got room for two more people. No smoking in the car, but we'll stop often for smoke and potty breaks. I plan on driving through the night if I can find someone to share the driving with. We'll spend the night in a hotel in Reno to get showers and sleep before the event. We also plan to go to a buffet in Reno before heading to the playa.

The cost of gas with three or four of us in the car is cheaper than a plane ticket and if we double up in the hotel rooms that should be very cheap, too.

If I'm responding to Freda - I'll see you on the playa!
TIme is an illusion; lunchtime doubly so.

Hello, fre! I just wanted to say hello to a fellow Baltimore burner. I don't know if you know me personally, but I'm ben from PDF. I'm flying out first thing Sunday morning on Southwest and renting a minivan in town (with 2 or 3 other friends). I'm not sure if we'd have room for you in the van, though (I have to pick up a lot of supplies in Reno for my bar), but trailer rental might be an option.

If it's not much more expensive, I strongly recommend flying Southwest. They let you check 3 bags instead of 2, which makes a huge difference. Are you putting anything on the Videogasm truck to ship out?
