Bright color-changing light?

Post by Dork » Fri Jul 13, 2007 3:37 pm

I'm looking for a bright battery operated RGB LED that slowly cycles through many colors. It's going to be behind fabric, so I don't care what sort of packaging it has, if any. The smaller the better.

Anyone have a good lead? I'm not up for building any electronics right now.

Yep! We've got a couple too...If you float 'em in a clear, round jug or tub you get the extra spinny effect...Otherwise, just flip it on its back and turn it on. Got a 2-pack (big one, little one) at Sam's Club for about 20 clams.

I grabbed a couple of these little bases for those plastic laser-cut cubes from the dollar store. Three LEDs change from red to blue to orange. The blue is actually pretty bright. Here's a poor picture:

You get the idea. Three AA's ran it for three days solid. Approximately ten seconds for a full cycle of three colors. AND THEY'RE A DOLLAR.
I am the people your parents warned you about.

How bout three blinking lights, red, green and blue? Dork, you know what that means. If they are not in perfect phase, you'll get the illusion of cycling through colors, including white on the rare instance that all three fire at the same time.

Not sure why I didn't think to look on Ebay first... apparently they make LEDs with the color changing circuitry built right into them. No extra circuits needed, other than a resistor to regulate the current. I bought a 10-pack of them and put them inside my attempt at making a hat:

I don't like the overall design at all, but it stays on my head and glows in an interesting way so I guess that will do until I come up with a better design. The leds turned out to be fairly directional - the bulk of the light shines straight forward. Enough comes out the side and bounces around to make the whole hat light up, though.

Not flashing, just slowly cycling through different colors. It's brighter than it looks in the picture - my camera doesn't do low light very well. It's spandex stretched over a metal frame.

Bright, reasonably cheap, light weight and small. Colors are vivid. Can be set to auto color changing or sound activated.
