So I live in San Fran and work in Oakland. I work right near the are where they are doing the fire arts show, near Mandela... I love the things Crucible has done and I love the art presented at the show as well... I was just bothered by the fact they charge $40-$45 to go see the same art people saw the year before out on the playa... And that aint the part that got me... The part that got me was that on Saturday evening (tonight) they are charging $250 per person to enter... Thats the same price as a BM ticket... And for what? 8 hours of of art that has already been seen the year previous? And thats not to say that the show doesnt give newcomers a chance to go see the art for the first time... It does give newcomers a chance to see extrodinary things they may not have seen before... But 90% of the attendees to the Crucible show are all regular burners anyhow. So my point is, (I am stoned and tired, but I think I had a point haha) isnt $250 a bit steep for seeing art that you have already seen or that your going to be seeing at the same price rate in another 50 days? I dunno, Im not talking shit, I mean I love the Fire Arts Show... Its just seems that somewhere, someone is making some kind of good bank off this... I mean you have BM org who hosts 60,000 people at $150-$280 a pop, for 8-9 days... Then you have The Fire Arts show who is charging $250 for 8 hours to see the same things that were out on the playa... Even the $40-$45 rate they were charging for entry on Wed-Fri seems a lil steep... I dunno, not hating, just random thoughts... I hope nobody is offended or anything... Was just a thought... Anyhow... I got dreams of the playa in my head so Im crashing... Gnight...

I haven't been to one of their shows yet, but I've been vieing to. First off, burningman is a completely different beast. The $250 you pay to go there comes along with the baggage, so people will be willing to pay more to have convenience. $250 is actually really cheap, because BM is out in BFE where it's cheap to rent space and most of their workers are volunteer. How much do the shows cost to put on in the bay area? How many employees do they have to *hire*? How many people show up? $250x40,000 is a different number than $250xtheir audience. Do they pay their artists? As you can see there are differences. Why people pay to see the stuff again? It's fun and it's fire. Nuff said.
It was a fund raiser for fuck's sake. For $250 you weren't going just to see art you were being enticed to fund art and to fund one of the last true remaining art collectives of any decent size left here in the bay area.So my point is, (I am stoned and tired, but I think I had a point haha) isnt $250 a bit steep for seeing art that you have already seen or that your going to be seeing at the same price rate in another 50 days?
The Crucible's Fire arts Festival is the single largest, most important opportunity for the group to raise money in a funding starved city that they have.
