Does Crossdressing Make You Uncomfortable?

Post by Trixy » Sat Jul 14, 2007 1:09 pm

And what do you consider "crossdressing?"

My first public outing "enfemme" was at BM 01. I've always enjoyed it in the safety of my home, but was never comfortable in public. I was worried what people would say, think, or do to me. So I hid this part of me for 20 years.

Then my life changed! I wore a dress in public, at Burning Man. And guess what? Nothing happened. No one said a word, no one harrassed me, infact, I don't think anyone even noticed. I was just another person on the playa. How refreshing!

I know most men don't have a problem wearing skirts or dresses on the playa, and women can wear pants and men's shirts anywhere. I don't think most men find it exciting or great to wear a dress/skirt. I think they do it to stand out, do something different, or just to wear something they don't normally. But for me, I wear the skirt, because that's what I feel comfortable in. I feel like I'm wearing "MY" clothes, not womens clothes.

BRC is the GREATEST city on earth, becasue you can be yourself, and the good people love you for who you are, not what you do. It's a place where you can shed your inner demons, and live as you've always wanted to, no matter how that may be.

Thanks to all who have helped me in a way I could never help myself :D

What do you like to wear and why?

Was it ever difficult to put on a certain outfit and strut around the playa?

How did people respond to you, and how did that make you feel?

Happy Burn, can't wait to be home again!

We theme every day - and do you know how hard it is to find a wedding dress for a 74" 245 pound man at a thrift store? I did it though.

perseverence is the key. Gyre - you never get to the Mans base?

Four years ago I put on a skirt on playa & found out it's very comfortable & much cooler than shorts. I don't feel fem or odd, it just works on playa, & I do have the legs for it! I now have several skirts and enjoy the freedom. Just dont try to ride your bike without some practice, long summer skirts are hell on sprockets!

Skirts are definitely the thing on the playa. I'd trade shorts or pants for them any day out there and I have most years. Men have been hip to skirts for a really long time. It's only recently that they've become something more than comfortable gear.

And as for bike riding...I was never worried about my sprocket but there was some hangout on which I received several comments. Apparently, there's an etiquette to everything. Who knew?
Thanks to Addis, I had more free time.

mylarry owns more dresses than I do, and higher heels. He's a size 13 or so, my clothes are too big for him. Harumph! Although he spends most of his time in his kilt.

"Does Crossdressing Make You Uncomfortable?"

Yes.

But other people doing it is fine, no issue.

Oh dear god, my ribs hurt now.

Edit to add:

I wear sarongs all the time on playa. Never had the desire to full-on cross dress, though.

I've found that women who appreciate a man in a dress tend to be my kind of ladies. :)

I love it when you light them on fire and shoot your shotgun and the people are running out their house screaming and....

Oh, you meant CrossDRESSING!

I thought you meant CrossBURNING!

Sorry, wrong thread!

I'm with ron, the ladies really like a man that is secure with their own sexuality and can dress up as a drop dead lady at BM.

But some men are not very comfortable dressing as such. I've had some say, "I'm really not a trans i'm just doing this because this is BM yada, yada, yada. Yeah, right, sure sir, yes I know that you are really straight. I could spot it a mile away, don't worry, no guy is going to hit on you sir.

I'm comfortable with it...so much so that I showed up at the Meet and Greet one year like that. As for sarongs I had someone introduce me to them on the playa and I've got about 25 of them around here now...I don't think I could go long without one at hand as they have become indispensible.

My girlfriend has been talking about getting married at BM and I'd be wearing a modified Catholic school girl outfit for the ceremony...what's cool about it is there's others in her family who are looking for patterns and have offered to customize something for us.... and I've got pretty much everyone in her family onboard with the idea. It won't happen this year but it's looking more and more likely it will happen in 2008.

You've actually invented a way to make eplaya more confusing!

I returned a swimsuit for my wife yesterday, and told the clerk that "it just didn't flatter me"...Cue loud, long storm of nervous laughter. (From the clerk, that is.)
Been a Utilikiltarian for several years, and love the cool freedom although it's a little heavy. Tinkering with a "Utilarong", a sarong with a built-in sash that supports some pockets so I don't have to wear the lineman's belt with it. It's just the Boy Gear Factor that keeps me from wearing more Girl Stuff...it doesn't NEED to have a hammer loop, but MUST have a few good pockets and somewhere to clip a knife. Also searching the thrifts for a little purse or pouch to use as a "Utilisporran" as a sarong accessory. Perhaps sewing a zipper onto the opening of an oven mitt....

Yes, pocketess is what keeps larry in his kilt.

Trixy, if you are a trans and couldn't express it before I'm glad that you can now and feel comfortable in the outside world.

But at BM, I don't question if one is a trans or not, its just dressing up just like on holloween marti-gra and I don't care if one is a legite trans as well.

Kilts and toga's are not effeminate to me but historically correct forms of dress for men so they don't count as crossdressing.

Androgenous crossdressing! Now there is something that appeals to the closet Bi in everyone. A little bit male and a little bit female, it drives some people WILD!

Thanks Apollonaris Zeus, I'm glad BM helped me out as well.

Yes, clothing has really only been sexist in the last century or so. Men used to wear wigs, lots of ruffles, and soft pink colors. Now, if you go out in the "real" world, you might no be too happy with the results.

I do dress rather androgenous most of the time. Most of my clothes, shirts/pants/jeans are womens. They fit me best, and it's what I feel most comfortable in. I don't however present as female. I present as the masculine male that I am. I just really like the clothing styles of the ladies, and worship them for the GODS they are.

I don't want to be a woman, I really, really enjoy my outdoor plumbing. I don't want to be a tragically straight hetro male either. SO, I get to enjoy the best of both worlds, and at Burning Man, I can do it in public, with no fear of repression.

I've never met a more accepting group of people than at BRC. And it's such a great opportunity to show people that there's more than just male and female. The outer body does not always match with the inner body.

Just want to say thanks to all for being really nice, very fun, and making my world better. I try very hard to give all I have to the city that gives so much to me.

I wore a kilt for the first time last year and the differance between a kilt and shorts is incredible. The only problem I had was that it was new and still pretty stiff. Rubbed the wrong thing until it was a litte tender. If you get a kilt, wash it a few times to soften it up. Mine was gifted to me on the playa, still in the box

You may want to wear something under that kilt to stop the "rubbing" in the wrong places.

May I suggest ******************PANTIES*********************

Plus, if there's any metal or metal buttons on the kilt, the get VERY hot in the sun and can burn very delicate skin!

Trix, thank you for posting this thread. A lot of people attain BM without even knowing who and what we are made up of. The news media really doesn’t focus on the sexual preference of BM because the magazine’s readers would be turned off to the article and the editors would not prefer to antagonize their readers.

Hopefully, this thread will inform that a large percentage of BM attendees are in fact, gay and bisexual. If they don’t like that fact, then maybe they shouldn’t buy those tickets or set up that tent.

We have had people insulted and threaten with force to leave certain camps because of their ignorance. These people are few, fewer then the Frat Boz, who think BM is a titty show.

If anyone reading this has a problem with their sexuality and that of others, then please stay in Reno- they need your money more then Larry.

Glad to have you on board, Trix

Ah, mylarry prefers loose silky boxers, the little guy pokes up out of panties no matter what size we tried.

All those metal snaps make a metal detector go nuts in the airport, no, they don' t want you to just take it off.

AZ,

Thanks so much. I'm glad to be returning for my 6th year on the playa. And I just can't wait to be there already.

I do hope that thru my interactions with other people, they will come away a changed person. I hope they realize that people don't always fit into neat little boxes with labels.

It's sad that there have been ANY bad interactions, but the good FAR outweigh the bad. I have had nothing but really, really good times there.

And if only one person goes back home and is ok with seeing someone wearing clothes of the opposite gender, then my job is done. I'd love to help everyone expand their mind, and open their eye's to the diversity of this species. But social change takes time and effort, and sometimes it's not pretty (like when I first wake up with make up smeared all over my face), but it's worth every effort I put into it.

We the people of BRC can and will make a positive impact on the world around us!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
