How big is BRC?

Post by Trixy » Sat Jul 14, 2007 2:01 pm

Just wondering how big the city really is?

What's the square mileage? What's the square mileage of the orange fence area? How far from the man to the esplanade?

How many miles do you ride your bike per day?

I've always guessed about 20 miles a day for me?

From the BRC GoMap of last year:
Center Camp to the Man: 2,444'-0" (0.46 miles)
Area of BRC Event = 100,455,344.5337 sq ft.
Perimeter Fence (5 sides) Pt to Pt. = 7,641'-2.5" (1.44 miles)
Perimeter Fence Total Dist. = 38,206'-0" (7.2 miles)
Length of Esplanade = 8,796'-5.5" (1.66 miles)

I understand it may be a little larger this year to accommodate the added streets. See you there soon!!!!

Go here:

http://www.gmap-pedometer.com/

And Copy and paste this cooridinate :

40.76684, -119.22770

And you'll want to do a zoom of 15 to see the layout. (and hit the satellite button on the top right)

There's currently 2 views of Burning Man at this location, the populated one is where the 2006 event took place and the empty one is what's currently out there right now.

From their usage section of their site:

When you're ready to start recording the distance you traveled, click the Start recording button.

Thereafter, every double-click will draw a point on the map, and the distance from your last point and your cumulative distance will both appear in the boxes above. Note that only a double-click will create a new point.

The route drawn on the map will be red until you save the route, when it will turn blue. See the Saving Routes section below for more details on saving routes.

If you make a mistake or change your mind, the Undo last point button will remove the last point drawn and revert your distances to what they were before you drew it.

If you want to start over, click the Clear points and start over link.

Have fun!
AJ

That is very cool! How do I get to the empty view though? I'm on a Mac, but that shouldn't matter, should it? Thanks!

Distance from end of line at CampArctica to head of line: 1 hour.

The lines were long, but the longest I ever had to wait was about 20 minutes. Maybe I just lucked out on my timing. Good news is there are 3 ice sales points this year! So hopefully that will relieve the line congestion.

You can click and drag on the map section, or just use the up, down, left right arrows.

The "empty" map he is refering to is just south west of the picture of the 2006 event. Click and drag you will see it. This is NOT whats going on out there right now though. Its a picture from 2005 i believe. Its been there for a long time.

Yeah I sort of figured that was the case. That SW view appears to have been shot during construction of Center Camp in 2005. That is the "A" location, which is apparently where we will be again this year. In 2006 we were in the "B" location. The 2006 view went up not long after the event last year, leading me to believe that some Google folks are serious burners ;-)

Awesome!
