Do people at BM know what makes BM possible? I'm talking about the power of American money and power that allows hedonism, its colonial history of the Pacific - where fire spinning/performance originally comes from, or the irony of building and burning a shrine at a place people don't live because the shrine in many Asian countries represents the memory and history of the community and the place in which it resides.

People talk about BM as if it was some kind of "counterculture," but to me it epitomizes mainstream American culture that turns a blind eye to its own political context in the name of "spirituality" and "religion". It might be counterculture in the sense that it is about art, but BM art is based on American power/money, colonial history, and ignorance towards other cultures that reproduce the very mainstream American culture that it tries to critique (but ultimately cannot).

If so, would you mind making it? I'm trying to limit my reading to poorly drafted opinions to 5 minutes a day.

Oh, and the 'colonial history' blurb is a particularly ridiculous assertion.

Makes as much sense as attributing it to the underground music and DJ Club spinners of which there are more than the spinners of the Pacific and as much sense as this senseless post

Eeyore, I have no idea what your first paragraph means. The beginning, middle and end of the second sentence don't seem to have any relationship to one another. Please give another try at explaining your point.

And if your post was written at the bitter end of a 3 day hallucinogenic bender, then no harm, no foul. But otherwise, it's a bit as if you were speaking a different language - maybe you are so deep in thought you are not communicating pertinent parts of that thought.

What about going and just having a great time? I started going to BM because it was just something different to do, that wasn't anything like anything else. The fact that it had this whole community/tribal thing going was just a plus. Then I guess I became protective of it, aka I wanted it to continue like the way I remembered it. The whole $$$ thing is simply the means to the end I felt. We fight the business side because we know it can end this all someday, maybe.

Here's a question, let me know your thoughts on this, just curious.

I know of a camp that is planning on hiring a moving company to move there stuff from reno to the playa. Turns out that financially it saves them $300+ rather than getting a truck and hauling the stuff themselves. When I heard about this, it struck me in two ways, this is both so right and so wrong, almost a paradox. I feel this is at the heart what burning man is about and again what is going to bring it down. I can't decide if I hate the idea or love it. You?
