want to take a stab at designing my tattoo?

Post by jpx » Fri Jul 20, 2007 10:21 pm

calling passionate artists.

want to take a stab at designing my tattoo?

here's what i want. i've thought about this.

you know those chinese cats.

Image

so, picture a leopard. a 90-or-so pound cat. sitting...

Image

... as in the picture above. notice the shape and curves of her haunches.

(wow : ain't she beautiful.)

in the picture above the cat seems to be leaning forward a bit. i want mine to have a real sense of lift in the spine. proud. self-assured.

have the leopard lift its left forepaw, like the lucky maneki cat. the left paw raised is to repel evil.

in the picture above the cat faces the viewer, like, pointing to 6 o'clock. for me i want my cat to be sitting at 11 o'clock, like a 3/4 profile. so, not completely square and facing away from the viewer : facing slightly to the left. you shouldn't be able to see the cat's features -- its face will be faced away -- but you have to be able to see its lifted paw, and both of its ears, which should be pricked and alert.

and the tail should be held close, along the edge of the left foot.

as much as detail allows, i like to imagine it done in calligraphy with a bamboo brush like japanese caliigraphy. level of detail is ... i guess a leopard needs spots. which would make for a pretty thin brush, but that is what i envision.

if it helps, the leopard will go on my back, right of my spine, with its raised left paw positioned to be where my heart is along my centre line. so, the cat, facing away and left, looks directly into me.

well that's it. and thanks. what do you say to the person that designs your tattoo? it means a lot. thank-you, whoever you are. if you would like to take a stab at drawing it would you pm me?

stay cool, cats : ) & thanks. wow what a difference six months makes. this is the tattoo i want.
for me and my true love will never meet again

Lucky cats are Japanese, not Chinese. Maneki Neko. Just to be accurate. And all my years in Japan, I was told the raised left paw was to beckon prosperity and wealth. Uh, the tanuki repelled misfortune, the foxes kept away ghosts. At least, that's the way the grannies in the neighborhood explained it.

Just so you don't mistake a cat saying Show Me the Money as a cat waving away evil.

Bloody gums too. He should see a dentist before he visits his orthodontist.

i thought it was the other way around -- right is to bring prosperity, left to repel evil.

hmm -- i want it to be left, anyways...

*off to check wikipedia...

Instead of relying on faulty memory and pidgen Japanese, I looked it up. Right paw, wealth, left paw, customers. Bars usually have left-handed cats. Someone who can hold their liquor is "Hidari." or "Lefty." I'd forgotten that, I was Hiadri Maggi for a good long while. Lost a few too many brain cells along the way, no wonder I'd spaced out on that memory.

Nowhere did I find a single mention of lucky cats repelling evil. Not one reference, except for modern feng shui, and that's, pardon me, crap attached to a perfectly good traditional legend. Especially the modern rainbow colors of lucky cats, that's only a couple decades or so old and annoying. Most modern feng shui irritates me to no end.

You'll have to excuse me, I have a nice collection of old porcelain lucky cats and I get a little irritated with all the "new" meanings being assigned to them. What you want is a shishi, a lion or lion dog, totally different critter. Shishi are the symbol to repel evil, these are the animals at Shinto shrines, along with foxes, never, ever lucky cats.

Image

Just get a tat of the beautiful big cat, nevermind the raised paw which would look silly. Nice concept, but you're basing it on faulty mythology. Like the guy whose tat says "Beef and Brocoli."

Old made up crap = good

Just checking.

Oh no, my goodness.

Made up crap = bad.

Mixing old made up crap with new made up crap = very bad.

I'm very anal about keeping old crap and new crap apart. No blending of crap!
