Bending Rebar??

Okay, I need some help. I'm trying to find some place to get my rebar candy-caned, and no one so far offers that service. I would have thought the Home Depots and Lowe's of the world would have it available, but alas, I was wrong. Anyone know where I can get this done?

I can't imagine you'll be able to pay a store to do this for you. You best bet is to find a well anchored vise and a 5 or 6 foot pipe to put over the free end of the rebar. Have fun.

you might look at the oldest hardware store in your town. Many of these offer services beyond L & HD, that just sell boxed items and can barely scan the bar codes.

Almost any welding shop can do this for you.

if you have a pick-up truck with a tow hitch, take the ball off-out and stick the rebar in a little and start bending.. I do it all the time.. Just a note tho.

Candy cane rebar is hard to drive into the ground. I use the rebar caps on mine for protection... One more note. You don't need anything larger than 1/2 rebar....

Thanks, guys! Didn't think about the difficulty of pounding the candy caned rebar into the ground.... This is our first time, so we're trying to get everything figured out. got our monkey hut up today! Looks like it's gonna do the job!

candy-caning rebar is so 1998.

If the goal is to keep peeps from Vlad the Implalering themselves then this the better way:

1.) get a 1 liter pop bottle for each exposed piece of rebar. Put bottle over end of rebar and tape accordingly.

2.) Pick up a solar light at your local big box store and tape to the most egrigious rebars. People won't impale themselves over what they can see. The solar lights are about ten bucks each. Fire and Forget.

Candy caning is a pain in the ass and actually ruins the rebar for later use, thus filling our landfills with excess rebar, thus causing Al Gore's offspring to hit 100 MPH in their Priuseses.

EB - love that post! My main reason to candy cane it was to attach the sides of my monkey hut to the loop. However, I have since found some steel 15" stakes with hooks that I'm going to use. SOOOOO glad I didn't do the candy-caning. Oh, and pleeeeze let me know if monkey huts go out of style! Ahahaha!

Glad you found some stakes to use instead, but incase you (or anyone else) wants to approach the candy cane rebar thing in the future, Iâ€™ll share this:

Some rebar is heat treated and the rest can still have hard spots in it periodically. Sometimes bending these in a vise can be problematic and lead to the rebar breaking and possibly sending pieces flying. Yes, I know some of you have bent it for years without issue. The first one I tried, however shattered and lead me to thinkthat there must be a better way. And if youâ€™re getting rebar from a jobsite scrap pile, you never know what your getting.

Instead, find someone with an oxy/acetylene torch (any welding shop) and get them to heat a spot about 3â€

2 steel pipes about 3' in length, your foot, a garage floor, and a little effort. I use 2'x3/8" rebar and bend about 6" of one end over.

I prefer the J shape myself.

If you get the nice tight bend with a torch, candy-caned rebar is easy to pound in. I first tried the non-torch methods and IMO they compare quite unfavorably.

I don't know what this candy-caning has to do with preventing its future use. We've been using the same candy cane rebar since '02. We always have stuff to stake down.

I have never found the canes difficult to pound into the playa... and they're extremely easy to remove since you've got something to grab onto when twisting and pulling. I just use a hammer or sledge to loosen them.

I also like the fact that you can pound them all the way into the ground leaving no hard object to trip on or bash a shin.

I found our pre-caned rebar at a plumbing/pvc supply store in Santa Monica. But as it was 5 years ago I've forgotten their name. They're in that industrial zone near Colorado/Broadway. Anyone know the place I'm talking about? Their PVC was pretty affordable too.

In my experience candy caning rebar is not difficult at all, it pounds into the playa just fine with a good size sledge, removal is easy using a crowbar and small peice of 2x4, nothing sticks above the surface that needs to be coverd by a plastic bottle or tennis ball, it's easier to attach ropes and cables to, and I've been using the same rebar for years over and over. That's just me though.
