Ask the local people of Puerto Vallarta about the plastic cups leaching toxins into Banderas Bay while drunken frat boys ask girls to go wild ... ask the sea turtles who return to the beaches to lay their eggs, only to discover golf turf where sand had been ... ask the indigenous people of Costa Rica how their culture was replaced by gringo surfers who bought real estate with their software engineering income ...

But oh yeah. I forgot. You were on vacation.

The desert environment is harsh enough to kill off any sea turtles and gringo surfers alike, without bothering to distinguish between the two.

Never give all your sympathy to Mother Nature. She's a harsh bitch and she'll end us before we end her. Our best bet is finding a healthy way to co-exist, in my opinion.

Party on, Garth.

I wanted to say this earlier but I held my fire...

keracabra = self confessed media whore. Be careful, your rants may be that person's next article. Treat 'em like a fucking troll and let the thread drop dead.

OK, so I got a little ahead o'myself there with the sea turtles. I'm just asking whether our values go on vacation with us. Is BRC separate from the d-fault world, and vice versa? Do our philosophies permeate the BRC border? If we're resource- and emission-conscious in d-fault, is it cool to party like it's 1999, or uh, Dec. 20, 2012, in BRC? If we're all about gifting and rejection of consumerism inside BRC, shouldn't we extend that to the d-fault world that we exist in 51 months a year?

This is the question I've been asking of BRC, for years. I don't ask it in order to antagonize, but to be self-critical, to evolve, because I see in burningman the potential to change this country. (Check 2004 article on the politics of burningman.) BRC LCC seems to be stepping up to this more every year --socially, and now (to some extent) environmentally, and I hope at some point politically.

You don't even know me or anything about my values, but that brush in your hand looks mighty green.

Where was this article published? I don't subscribe to Highlights, so I'd have missed it there.
This DOES give me an idea for an art project, though...Wading pools filled with oily sludge and foam mockups of sea creatures that you can scrub with provided brushes. That way, the few Ecological Saviors that actually make it to the playa can have something constructive to do all week.

I already think this will be remembered as the year of "Greener Than Thou".

man, you guys are right. your arguments are so well thought-out, so responsive to the questions i posed. you've managed to convince me that i was wrong, wrong to think all that genius out at brc could actually make a positive impact on american society.

burning man is a party, and only a party. i stand corrected.

When you post crap that is not well thought out, expect to get responses that are similar. Post something with substance and you might get responses with substance. Questions that should be obvious are not substance, they just point out ignorance.

Even a potlatch serves a constructive purpose. A LOT of good comes out of Burning Man...and it's NOT a party- It's a Fucking (,) Camping Trip.

Now, if you'll excuse me, I have trees to plant.

If we really want to go green, we should move Burning Man to Alaska. It's 1:30 a.m. and it's still light out. No energy to be wasted on lighting and no garbage from all the lighting trinkets.

Up on the north slope, where it's flat and barren - not too different from the playa - it'd be as bright as noon right now.
