Piercings on the playa
Piercings on the playa
I have my nipples pierced. I have had them for 2+ years so they are not new. They sometimes get irritated though.
I am wondering if any other of you wonderful burners who have piercings have ever expirenced any problems with them. I am concerned because it is supposed to be extra dusty this year.
I am not planning on being nude, but who really ever plans anything on the playa?
Suggestions? Comments?

If you're worried about playadust accumulating on your nipples then you're probably NOT moving around enough.
But, packing a little bottle of alcohol and /or some antibac ointment and/or antiseptic wipes can't hurt you. In fact, they're parts of a decent Extreme Conditions Medical Kit. I've got one ear piercing that's totally stable and one that freaks out on me every once in a while, but it has never reacted due to playa. Fewer nerve-endings in an earlobe, though. Have your nipples checked thoroughly throughout the week and you'll be better than okay.

I have several piercings (including nipples) and have never had a problem with them that was caused by the playa. Now getting them caught on other peoples jewelry /costumes is a different matter. Even after almost ripping a nipple ring out on someones necklace I was a little sore (and aroused) but fine. I just wiped off the blood and playa with a wet paper towel and carried on. If you're a little paranoid then bringing your liquid dial anti-bacterial soap may provide peace of mind.
Your mileage may vary but probably not greatly.

After 2+ years those nipples are fully healed unless you are snagging them, tearing, or stretching to lager gauge.
The playa dust is not that bad. Burners tend to exaggerate the corrosive / alkaline effect. Soapy water is more alkali than playa dust and just as corrosive/caustic.
The playa is also fairly sterile being a fabulous desiccant. If bacteria get in there, chances are they are a result of humanity (sweaty hugs, puppy piles, wayward lips of fabulous strangers), not playa dust.
Just use normal sanitation methods. An occasional salt water soak never hurts.

Hey, if I could go two days after having these catheters removed without a problem, your nipples will be just fine.

That's one of the pictures my doctor uses for lectures about brachytherapy radiation treatment, I don't know how many women have seen my breast, but it's a lot. Looks much nicer these days!
