Prevailing wind and 2007 camp direction

Post by Captain Crunch » Sun Jul 29, 2007 9:17 am

We are trying to plan out where and which side of the road to make camp this year. I'd like to find out if anyone has info on the direction of the prevailing wind and this year's site orientation. Any meteorologists out there?

Typical winds are South, Southwest.

Usually North runs through either the 4:00 - 10:00 radial or the 4:30 - 10:30.

However, since the DPW has not even staked the first surveying point on the Playa yet, and we have no idea how they will lay out the city ... this will be speculation.

Here is the image you get in Google Maps if you navigate in to the playa and turn on the satellite image:

The 6:00 centerline runs SW-NE, same as the prevailing afternoon wind direction.

The wind usually goes from Gerlach down into the deep playa. So if things are set up as before, the wind might typically blow in the direction you'd be walking if you walked from centercamp out to the man.

As far as the wind direction is concerned, it will ALWAYS blow in the direction that you don't want. And when you want a cool breeze, it will be dead calm, plan on it!

It pretty much blows against you on the way home, late at night, in the middle of nowhere. It's funny that way. Ha! Good one, Wind!

Prevailing winds have never really much concerned me. Those are gentle breezes at 5mph (or less). It's when a swirling, nasty dust storm kicks up that I care about the wind, and in times like those the wind can come from any direction, if not all of them.

Yeah, the worst winds I have experienced come from the deep playa. So just the opposite of the prevailing.
It's going to be alright.

Hasn't it been the case that there's more dust on the 9:00 o'clock side than on the 3:00?

If that were true wouldn't the elevation be a foot or two higher?

IMHO, the dust is far worse the closer you are to the entrance road and where you are in relation to it and the prevailing wind.

I agree that the worst of the high wind is unpredictable and can come from any direction but the general breeze comes from Gerlach toward the open playa. That is what carries the constant dust from the entrance road.

Here's the Weather Underground site for the playa. Scroll down and insert any past day, week or month and graphs will show you wind speed and directions. Pretty cool quantitative info, however, most times it becomes irrelevant on the playa once you get there. Become one with the wind and you'll be fine.

I think that generally works out that the entrance road is on the 9:00 o'clock side, hence more dust over there.

Don't forget your dust mask.

Dust mask fetish?

Prevailing wind direction has a lot to do with how we will install our art this year. Thanks for the tips.
