Re: spanks for bacon
You are going to have an extremely pleasant playa experience if you own a meat shop and bring loads of bacon and dish it out on the playa.undeclared wrote:so my friend that went to the burn last year suggested how wonderful cold, cooked bacon is on the playa, since i own a meat store, and since this will be my first burn this year, i thought why not walk around dressed like a piece of bacon giving out little packs of pre cooked bacon.
we would cook it before we come down and keep it frozen and walk around in the evening on tuesday and thursday, trading spanks for bacon, hope to see ya all down there!!!
Bacon is extremely popular on the playa. MUCH MORE POPULAR THAN SAUSAGE!!!
You could also try draping real raw bacon on your naked body while out during the day, and letting the sun sizzle it on your bod...your delicious aromas will attract lots of hungry hung over playa sluts!

------HEALTH DEPARTMENT
Are you planning anything requiring large amounts of water?
Are you hosting a large kitchen?
Are you giving away food?
Are you serving quantities of drinks over ice?
Are you thinking you may need to get a Health Permit?
If so, this is important information to read.
WATER
Burning Man does not provide water for any projects.
You must bring your own.
Large quantities of water (250 gallons+) being used for projects
that entail full body contact or consumption by people must be
"potable" and come from state health department approved water
sources. If you are bringing in a water truck or are hauling in
large amounts of water you should speak to us directly. There are
health department regulations that you need to be aware of.
Email us at [email protected]
Water being used for misting systems, slip and slides and things that
do not involve consumption do not need health department clearance.
It is wise to make sure that you have "potable" water and the source
is reputable!
Large public pools and showers will not be permitted. Art pieces
involving water are not considered showers unless they are labeled
such and encourage bathing. If you have questions about this, email
us at [email protected]
KITCHENS/ BARS or DRINKS
If you are providing beverages and/or food for your camp and friends,
no health permit is needed.
PUBLIC kitchens of any sort need a permit. Remember, Burning Man
does not tolerate the sale of anything at the event, including food.
We have cultivated a gift economy. If you are caught selling or
bartering food like currency the health department will shut you down --
if your neighbors don't get to you first!
If you are giving food to the public you need a permit.
Your CAMPMATES and FRIENDS are the only people you can give
food to without health department clearance. If you have any questions,
please contact us at [email protected]
FRESH SQUEEZED JUICES
If you are giving away freshly-squeezed fruit drinks to anyone other
than your CAMPMATES and FRIENDS, you must get a permit.
ICE
Ice is considered food by the health department. Although there
should be no permits needed for "free bars" or "barter bars", your
ice source must be approved by state health. The easiest way to comply
is to purchase your ice from commercial sources in the surrounding towns
as you enter our city, or from us at the event. (Money from our ice
sales goes directly back to the town of Gerlach as a gift.)
APPLYING
The health department has forms ready to send out to you. It costs
about $50.00 to apply for a basic permit. The process is simple and
the health department is easy to work with. They are genuinely
concerned about the health of our citizens and prevention of
food-born epidemics, so it is their duty to inspect food preparation
areas. Like the other public safety agencies on the playa, they can
issues citations and fines for violations, and/or shut you down for
non-compliance.
If you know you need a permit you can call the health department
directly at (775) 687-7548 and ask for Richard.
Or email him at [email protected] . . . or hit this link:
[updated link as of July 13, 2007]
http://health.nv.gov/index.php?option=c ... Itemid=978
If you are not COMPLETELY sure about your particular needs, we
strongly advise you to contact us before calling them. They need
about 4 weeks to process your permit so don't leave this to the last
minute. Contact us or them soon!
This year we will be giving the health department a list of the
permitted camps with their BRC addresses so the officials can find
you easier for inspections. Make sure we know you are going for a
permit so we can add you to our list!
Please pass this information to who ever it concerns in your camp.

yes, sorry didn't explain...
street bacon is probably under the radar.
but yes, if you are doing a food gift/ public kitchen, they will come buy and inspect. They're not being hard asses, just realistic. A few hundred people with food poisoning would overwhelm the resources out in the middle of nowhere.
Just thought it would be a helpful reference for anybody else too

I was at a food camp that complained to me of being treated unfairly by the health dept.
I asked them how they kept their food safe and they insisted on showing me, which I usually find is a good sign.
I ate there more than once and if I find them again, will eat there every chance I get this year, permit or not.
I've had real food poisoning and it's not something I would risk.
You really don't want it.
But I feel safe with their food.

It would be a shame if I had to resort to self-deception to preserve my faith in objective reality.

i've worked in the food industry for over 5yrs and have organized and held countless public bbq events. im not concerned at all with my method of keeping the bacon safe :) pre cooked, and kept frozen the entire time, i will be gifting it near the beggining of the event to ensure safety. and of course. with cooked bacon, how long would it last anyways with all the hungry people around

I did the permit thing and spoke with Richard on the phone. He was very nice, exceptionally helpful, and truly mostly concerned about public safety as opposed to the 50 bucks. My experience with them so far has been simple and pleasant. The process took just under a week and a half. Just wanted to offer my two cents. Thanks!
WOof!

A plan is what you vary from.
Destiny Lounge 3D will be at Bradbury and 3:15 this year as a part of the 404: Village Not Found group of camps! Come see us!

i can see where they get the idea of people having a working kitchen gifting meals to people passing by, but if im walking around, street bacon style, everyone can be my friend, im not in one location, im all over the playa. i guess it can be taken as a temporary vendor, either way. i will play it safe.

Just don't tell your doctor you're eating this stuff!
"i hope my neighbors dont mind the smell for that week"
Mind? MIND?!?
Another deeelish snack is take a slice of not-too-crispy bacon, spread it with that chreamcheese frosting that they put on cinnabons, roll up and eat. Repeat once. After that, you wont want to eat for a while... *snork*
It's maybe the unhealthiest food item i can think of, but it tastes SO good, and you really can't eat very many at a time.
When my pal Jayne and i discoverd this treat early one morning, she turned to me with a resigned grin and said "Jade, this is why we aren't skinny...".
