Protecting Amps
Protecting Amps
Whats a good way to protect my amps at burning man?
Use a cable tie and combination lock and attach them to the bumper of a big truck.
Do not spill fluids of any kind into the amps.
Use only quality generators to power them or do power conditioning with questionable power.
During dust storms and white-outs, would be nice if you shut them down and pack them into a box, bad etc.
When you get home have your friendly shop clean and blow out the inside of the amp with dry air.

I bolt mine into a seven foot steel rack.
Then I leave them at home in the ac.
Filters can be used for dust.
I would bring a heat sinked type that doesn't need a fan, if I was taking one to the desert.
If you can't find one large enough that doesn't use a fan, you're too loud anyway.
Some can be mounted to aluminum sheet or bar with compound for cooling, depending on design.

It would be a shame if I had to resort to self-deception to preserve my faith in objective reality.

I mount the amps in the top-most sections of the rack, giving a space or two at the bottom to stay open. That's where dust will settle, and dammit I don't want that to happen anywhere near my amps.
I also use plenty of compressed air to blast all my gear. And shield the amps/racks as much as possible from direct exposure to sun/wind.
Hope that helps - good luck!

My introduction to Burning Man was TRON being project by the camp opposite mine (my camp-mates were nowhere to be seen when I showed up). I can't remember the camp name, but I thought it was pretty cool that a movie from my childhood was being screened just for me.Elliot wrote: How about a digital movie projector?
Anyway, they simply put the projector in their volkswagen and projected through the passenger window. This seemed to be pretty good dust protection, and although there was limited ventilation, it was only being operated at night when it's cool.

Elliot, check the list of registered theme camps for a camp called Videogasm. Get in touch with someone from that camp, and ask for any advice/experience they could share. They do screenings all week and have been doing so for years, I'm sure they've got a pretty good system down...
Good luck!
