Was out on the playa last weekend, and found it to be a little dustier than usual. After a 4 hour dust storm..in which visibility was zero...my friends camo net was blown over and buried in a dune of that lovely playa dust. They're great for making playa angels!! Respirators might be in order for this year...or you can find full face gas masks fairly cheap through surplus stores..

so...PLAN ACCORDINGLY!!...or not....i personally liked th dust

Yeah, I don't think it's any secret that 2007 has been a significantly drier year than the last few. In all likelihood, that's going to mean lots and lots more dust.

Of course, it's also possible that we could see some rain. The wet season ended sooner, the dry season started earlier, the lake dried up earlier... the fall rains could come sooner, too.

I'm hoping for dry and dusty.

I do believe that the dust is in the harmful/dangerous range. If you are really concerned about resp. than get the proper filter. My lungs are already fucked so I just use the basic masks for serious stuff and hankys for light duty. Full out respirators are great though is ya can swing the extra couple bucks. Its also gonna be a hot on this year.. temps are already up there in Reno/BRC region.

It is, where I was camped, much like 2001... where bike riding can be treacherous..if you steer too fast.. that type of dust.. and yes..very difficult to breath if you happen to be stuck in a storm

If ya get a respirator, get really used to it before ya go - like wear it for 8 hours solid to see if ya can handle it, because out there in triple digit heat and in a duststorm you really can't take it off for a deep, fresh breath. Triple that if ya get a gas mask (which are really hot and sweaty and nasty). AND make sure you have good filters (and replacements, if it gets that dusty) for them.

SOME PEOPLE cannot handle respirators. Serious. Be warned. I wouldn't be caught without mine.

And don't forget eye protection - both dark *and* clear lenses. Yeah.

Don't prepare too much, though. Last year I bought a few awesome fashionable coats in preparation for the cold nights that I always seem to be underdressed for, and didn't end up being able to wear them because it was so hot at night. I need to put a big sign on the inside of my suitcases this year, to remind me to pack layers, layers, and more layers.

edit: To contribute to the topic, I find bandanas to be a far better option than respirators. Tie them around your face train-robber style, and keep them moist for extra dust protection. When not in use, you can either wear them or your head to keep the sun off, or dunk them in the cooler and drape over the back of your neck (bliss).

ok...hows this for a weather report.?...unless it rains..alot..that dust is still sonna be their. dont know what the weathers gonna be like when we get their..all I know, is were going to enjoy it in the dust

I am a huge resperator fan. Not only do they look extra cool, but you can make really great piggy-style grunting noises in them! One tip, however, is that if you are going to bring a resperator AND believe that at some point you may be impared due to intoxication or lack of sleep, it is a good idea to bring a bandana or a pack of paper mask-style resperators as a back-up/gift item that people will be really greatful for if they are caught in a dust storm and stupidly do not have a filter...

On another dust-related note, has anyone ever wrapped their vehicle in order to keep it dust free? I have thought about it before but never bothered. If you did make a car condom, what did you use and how did it work?

good observation! actually, we will be going out early, to clear coat a good portion of the playa. we will be using a generous coat of polyeurethane, so don't worry about the dust, or respiratory problems..you'll be fine!

The playa looked in excellent shape to me. High winds did not kick up dust except on that sort of road on the westerly side of the playa, where the surface had already been crunched. I've see photos of a white out from I think the next weekend, though - usual playa conditions, I'm sure.

I am convinced that the dustier-than-usual conditions will wreak havoc on all of the awe-inspiring cutting edge environmental technology that will be on display in the McPavillion Trade Show.

Perhaps those companies that will be displaying their wares should consider keeping their expensive and amazing technology at home to keep it safe.

From what I understand, wrapping the car is a really bad idea. The dust gets in and acts as a scrubbing powder with the cover moving in the wind scrubbing the paint off the car all week long.

Heard this too. Last year I made a frame out of PVC that I mounted to my car's roof rack. It extended out over my tent and had legs at each corner. I then threw grommeted billboard vinyl over it and secured with 2' rebar. Held up great and kept the car outta the wind and dust.

Thanks for the advice CapBadger, I had suspected that there might be som loofa-like effects from the car condom approach.

Anyhoo, since TomServo is going out early to clearcoat the playa, it should not be much of a problem. Why cant we just paint a large section black and a large section silver and build a huge stirling engine?

I've been doing it every year for 6 years...strapping a reflective tarp on my black truck and has not gotten scratched up from dust. That dust is too fine to do shit. The only scratch I got was from one of the hooks from the bungee cord that wasnt hooked properly (hook facing away from the car).

That could be a very good thing..the rain will harden the playa to a nice crust...however, the more that crust gets broken up the dust will return. So at least this will keep it from being dusty for those early arrivals.

Flammepus? Oslo, Norway? You know about other Norwegian burners, right?

I know nothing about wrapping a car, but if I were to try it, I would use Stretch Wrap. Like the saran (sp?) wrap you may have used to wrap food, but bigger. Sold at packaging supply stores.

Went to the playa today (Aug 5th). We left around 09:30 and got to Brunos around 11:30 and stopped for a cheeseburger. There was alot of dust blowing in from the Smoke Creek Desert north of Pyramid Lake. There was a consistant, stifff wind around 20mph comming from the S/SW creating lots of blowing dust and some imperssive dust devils. Driving east half way across the playa we could just about make out Trego Hot Spring through the dust. Forget about seeing Black Rock Point to the north. This year I'm binging a dual filter resperator and two boxes of dust masks for myself and gifting. Sometime in the next two weeks I'm going to The Big Red Barn in reno to check out their goggles. TomServo was right, it's dusty.

Actually, I have don't know any Norwegian Burners other than the ones who I have taken there myself. I have not seen any messages on the Euroburners mailinglist either. I have been thinking about inquring, but have been just been trying to fend of a trifecta of burning tarbabies (work/volunteering/fun) for the last six months...
Do you know any Norwegian burners?
