This device is the well-named "The Beast," with 2,000 lumens and runs on 20 lithium D cells. Wow! And they last a whopping hour and a half in The Beast! Costs only 3,519 pounds in England. What is that in real money?

Try again...
1 GBP = 2.03225 USD
3,519.00 GBP = 7,151.78 USD

And before you ask, look up xe.com (money conversion rate site).

Onion parody?
How do 20 "D" cells fit into THAT? Or do you wear a backpack with the batts and run an umbilical to the light?

Okay, I misread it. It says it uses 20 123A Lithium batteries.

Somewhere in the body it mentions D-cells, but that's in a comparison to another flashlight.

Amazon pairs 123A Lithium in a package for 15 dollars, so 10 x 15 is a hundred and fifty bucks for batteries for this sucker. Here's the relevant paragraph on how you put them in:
Power is supplied to the Beast II by twenty 123A lithium batteries held securely inside four cylindrical chambers machined into the flashlight body. These energy-dense batteries provide a remarkable runtime of 1.5 hours for the HID lamp and 20 hours for the LED array.
Remarkable is correct, but uh not in the way I'd _want_ it to be remarkable.

$150 for 1.5 hours. How much is that in real dollars? :->

There's a new flashlight out for cops that makes the perps vomit when you shine it on them:

I think The Beast will make you puke when you have to cough up 7 grand US for the device and a hundred fifty a whack for power every hour and a half.

123s can be had in bulk alot cheaper. Even the SureFire brand via ebuy can be had for 50% off. If you think the Beast is bad check out the HellFighter, it has 3000 lumens.

Surefire makes good stuff but they are not energy saving for the most part. My G2 is nice and light has decent output but eats those 123s like they're nothing. I think I have 40 123 batteries to last me on the playa. I prefer the LED for when I only need a lil light and I want the batteries to last.

If anyone is interested, there are HID headlamps and flashlights and bike lights.
They aren't too expensive.
The ravers will definitely shriek if you point the headlamp at them though.
That could get unsettling.

But if you need low power light for an art car, it's very efficient.
Ten and twenty watt HIDs are available.
Standard automotive is 35 watts.

It would be a shame if I had to resort to self-deception to preserve my faith in objective reality.

I suppose that if your local Homeland SecurityTM Agency is footing the bill, you can go through as many batts as you please. And just throw the dead ones in the trash!
