Coleman 5000 generator with a severe allergy to Playa Dust
ePlaya crew-
Or generator decided to die last year during our camps party. It was a sad affair. However, the party went on with the help of our neighbors, who so kindly steped in with electricity for us.
We have been trying to overhaul the parts we thought would be dead, however it turns out, we don't know what we are doing. Now it is a month before the burn and we need a reccomended small engine/ generator repair shop in the San Francisco area that knows playa dust.
Any Help?

It died?
Did the dust kill it? or kill it eventually?

Given the hourly costs most mechanics charge, and the guesstimate that repairing your dust-caked generator is going to be a labor-intensive affair, odds are it would be a better bet to replace the generator. Especially considering the relatively low grade nature of Coleman generators.
Unless you really truly need 5 kilowatts of power, I suggest you and your campmates look into either a Honda or Yamaha whisper quiet model. You can get a couple thousand watts of power for under $1000 if you look around (check Craig's List and ebay). Plus you get the benefit of generating minimal noise.
Whether you get the Coleman working or you get something else, I highly recommend you consider building a baffle - that will not only cut down on the noise, but it blocks the wind from blowing dust into the generator.
Good luck!

I third the above motion, all in favor say "I", <saying "I">.
My EU3000 was worth every penny I spent. And if you camp next to me with your coleman 5000, we won't be very good neighbors. Please take up a collection at your local church or house of worship to save all of our ears.
Just buy the Honda, or the new generation Yamaha, it's even 1 decibel more quiet than the Honda, then you can be one up on the jones'.

Even if you follow the sound box plans on the general etiquette site that the BM home page links to, that generator is still going to be a major annoyance for your neighbors. If you have ANY OTHER REASONABLE ALTERNATIVE, give it some serious consideration. Junk the Coleman as far as using it on the playa.

Thank you so much for your wise and cheery insight. I have made arangements to get several 200' cords so that I can put the generator right next to your tent. It will be a perfect place for it! Best of all, I wont have to hear it or you. Our camp already has a Honda EU2000 that will be our daily power, the coleman is our back up. It already lives in a nice sound proof box that a baby could sleep on. It has been fixed, and it will be coming with us this year!
Thanks for all your useful help!
