Eplaya Rideshare NO-NOs

Post by AntiM » Wed Aug 15, 2007 1:44 pm

Plenty of people here are looking for rides and offering them. This is great. Asking for gas money, within reason, or offering to split a rental fee, that's okay. Creative exchanges, okay too, although better via Private Message. There's a gift economy in place here people, live up to it if at all possible.

Asking for seat filling fees or outright rental fees, no, not allowed. Per the Terms of Service and Community Guidelines, this falls under commerce and is not allowed. There have been many, many newcomers making this mistake, please, find another venue for advertising. Like tribe.net or Craigslist. Rule of thumb, if you are making money off it, it is not welcome.

Riders, investigate who is asking you for money. Yes, there are tours and shuttle services, but they are NEVER listed on the eplaya. Sometimes a person may make a recommendation for good resources, check these things out carefully.

Do some posters sneak by the moderators? yes. Are some posters providing a good service? Yes, but we must be very clear that even the best intended commerce is still commerce.

Tickets are the sole exception, and these sales should not be turning a profit. There is a ticket section.

Thank you.

Next no-no folks. DO NOT put your phone number in your post. This is just scary bad if you stop and think about it.

An email addy, alright, but best of all initiate contact through the private messages here. Don't just post and never come back to check.

Why is that? Just about anything anyone wants to know about me is in the phone book and other public records. Just "MikeVDS", when I use it, makes me real easy to stalk since I've been using it for so long. I guess I'm scarier than 99% of the people who might consider stalking me though, the meek may have a little more to worry about. If you say things on here you wouldn't want your mom or boss to read, never post anything that can be linked to you, but if you treat this as a public forum, I fail to see how it's much different than being listed in a phone book. I use MikeVDS so I assume everyone I know reads what I write.

Your situation might not be the one that most people are in. As a general rule of safety and privacy on tha intarweb, I recommend that people don't post their phone number. Aside from someone being a fucktard on the boards, any number of scam artists are out there. Personally I'd rather see someone err on the side of caution, and not feed the stalkers & identity thieves.

In addition to safety matters, there's also the fact that it's a permanent post for a temporary offer. Putting your phone number leaves the door open for people to call you about unrelated issues or because they don't understand your post was from the previous year. I've gotten calls from people who saw a months-old ad on freecycle and didn't understand that the post remains even after the item is gone. We should probably just wipe out the whole rideshare and ticket sections after the event to avoid that. The posts may hang around on Google for some time even if we do that, though.

Personally, I'd rather be able to manage things through PM and only give my number out to those who I want calling me. I guess it's a bit of a personal decision - whether you don't mind the risk of your phone number being available for pranks or confused people.

Consider making the posts non-permanent.

MR: Dork is just telling us how it is. He, nor I, has no power to change what is. This board is in many ways the unwanted bastard child of the LLC. makiing changes here, even if warrented (and there was a great todo about deleted posts a few years back) is a very low priority.

Bump.

And it has fallen to me to delete the extraneous threads in share resources ... especially the old rideshare offers and items given away and done. Egads! Delete posts! Egads, the horror, the horror!

And check the date on the post. Unless you have that space-time continuum thing figured out.

That's a very nice offer.

If you see a few, I'll have a look at them. I've kept a lot of things because there's useful info as the threads drift. Not always obvious why I choose to let things remain unless you make it through the thread. Object lessons quite often. I've taken down dozens and dozens of single post "ride to BRC from Reno" requests. It'd help if people put the year in the title.

We can always create new folders or clarify descriptions of existing folders if it helps organize things. Anything year-specific should go in a folder that can be dumped after the event.

AntiM,

I am still really sorry for resurrecting a "lost headlamp" thread from the wrong year. Really. I am also sorry that six more people posted after me and you had to lock the thread. Maybe you should just let us suffer the consequences of our knuckleheadedness.

Seriously, thanks to all of you for your hard work keeping this board organized.

That is my preferred way to operate Bulldozers too.........

Many people do not have constant interweb and post phone numbers because they still use them.
The tickets I sold in the past all went to people posting phone numbers because I couldn't use the web.
On ebay and craigslist, people that post phone numbers sell more and sell faster.

When I don't want to talk to someone, I hang up.

I might use a secondary number on skype or something in the future, but the people I don't want to talk to always seem to have my number anyway.

People used to be more protective of email addresses and now I know many people that are paranoid about their phone number.
Seem to be the same people that get mad when you don't call them about something.

The problem with phone numbers is they hang out here forever. I can remove them later, but it would have to be by request, case by case. Sometimes the web is better, sometimes not.

Is there any record of someone having driven from Seattle to BRC naked?
Don't bore your friends with all your troubles. Tell your enemies instead, for they will delight in hearing about them.

This should be the #1 rule. It's exceptionally annoying to offer a ride for free at another person's request, agree to change my schedule, and then never again hear from the person who had requested a ride. It's a very unburnerly thing to do.
